Colors can truly effect your mood. Chapter 7 of the Everything Dating Book 2nd Edition I wrote for Adams Media (2005) has an entire section on colors, and what they can do for your love life. The color red is traditionally the color of love, blood and the heart, But it can also be the color of anger (eg. “seeing red”). It can make your pulse race, or it can be threatening (eg. red devil), depending upon amount and intensity. Red is the color of good fortune in some cultures, but it can also represent loss (eg. “An overdrawn bank account is one that is “in the red.”). Red is the color of warnings and danger (“eg. raising a red flag”).
For good or bad, red is an attention grabber. Now, Christina Aguilera has made the color red the focus of her latest fragrance, Red Sin. According to Christina, “red is more than just a color….wearing red can evoke emotions and make you feel sexy and confident. I created Red Sin with my love of the color red in mind…it can make you feel empowered, desirable and simply irresistible.”
Red Sin is a fruity floral with a lot of creamy musk, that will appeal to Aguilera’s younger fans and women who like soft, feminine fragrances. It has top notes of red apple with the merest whiff of cinnamon. The heart is floral of red cyclamen (a fragrance historically used in love elixers). The bottom starts with Christina’s trademark note of musk, added to sandalwood and rich, spicy red ginger.
I expect a “red” fragrance to have a lot of spice, perhaps a big hit of cinnamon or ginger, but the musk in Red Sin overpowers just about everything else. You can barely smell the apple or spices. The good news is that it’s also not cloying sweet. It’s soft enough to wear every day without knocking over co-workers at the office, but it’s sexy enough to spritz on when you’re getting up close and personal with someone special.
The design is also sexy, a white box festooned with red lace on the outer carton, and inside, what is now (after 4 successful fragrances), Christina’s signature bottle, that mirrors the curves of a woman’s body, also printed with red lace as the light pink juice shines within the clear glass. A tiny satin bow is a naughty little touch on the neck.
If you are seeking a soft, fruity floral that has lots of musk to stick on your skin at dry-down, and you want something to stick to your skin and stand up to evening, you’ll really like Red Sin. It will be a sexy date night fragrance for younger women. But, if you have a lot of fragrances already, or prefer complex florientals and oriental scents, this one isn’t going to add something exciting and new to your collection, other than the pretty bottle. Still, I’m betting it’s going to be a big hit for the holidays. …and the good news is that it is really affordable.
