Bodywarming Ginger Mentha Warming Mint Body Wash Makes a Heartwarming Gift

Sometimes the most exciting products are the modestly-priced ones.
One body product that makes an imaginative gift that won't break your budget but will make someone really happy is the Ginger Mentha Warming Mint Body Wash $12.00 by C.O. Bigelow. This body wash cleanses nicely, but it has 1% of both ginger extract and peppermint oil. The scent is an amazing blend of spicy ginger with a hint of mint. That's not what really makes it novel, however: it's the thick, rich creamy wash that has unique “ warming crystals.” These are infused into the wash-in-a-tube and immediately heat up upon body contact. For a few seconds, the cream creates a warming tingle on your body that's surprisingly comforting. When the warmth dissipates and you've finished your shower or bath, and the light, spicy scent lingers just a bit longer.

This product is novel, and it's fun to use. But I can see it having some practical applications as well, especialy if you live in a cold climate. Warm your body up instantly-- a super idea on a cold morning or after a hard day at work (or a workout). Guys absolutely loved this one as much as the ladies.

Thre is also a Body Scrub, $14.00 Moisturiing Body Cream 414.00, Ginger Mentha Lip Shine $7.50, Double Ginger Bath Fizz $5.00. All of these are iniexpensive and will delight everyone on your gift list.

Brow Expert Elke Von Freudenberg and The Brow Collection

The eyes are the "window to the soul," but as celebrity makeup artist and guru of brows, Elke Von Freudenberg will tell you, the wrong brows framing those eyes, can really ruin your look!
Elke's not just someone who has plucked and shaped the brows of stars and models (visit her Web Site to see her amazing portfolio) she's a woman who also knows that a bad brow experience can be truly traumatic. I visited her in her beautiful, sunlit, Manhattan studio to learn how she works magic on eyebrows on both coasts, and to view some of her newest brow makeup products from The Model Brow Collection.

Elke has a very calm and re-assuring demeanor when she's coming at your with brow tweezers. She prefers tweezing to waxing for better immediate and long-term results, but her technique is virtually painless. She confided that both men and women are often very nervous about having their eyebrows shaped because their past experiences and results were unpleasant. But if anyone can a brow-phobic around, it's Elke! I am hoping to interview her in greater detail in the near future, but with the holidays coming, you'll want to consider some of new brow products.

I honestly never thought much about my eyebrows, until Elke showed me how changing the shape and adding some of these products (just a touch) make all the difference in how your entire face, looks. When you wear glasses as I do, having beautifully groomed brows are even more important as the lenses magnify everything around your eyes.

The Brow Collection products are exclusive to Elke Von Freudenberg. They are housed in elegant, shiny black compacts with clear, peek-a-boo tops . These high-performance products perform well and look expensive, but they're actually affordable (Elke offers a "compare to" list for each product on her site, so you can see how her products stack up against some of the other, popular favorites). Purchase them online and make that "frame for your eyes" even more fantastic!

A definite "must-have" is one of the silky-smooth, wet/dry Day Brow Shadow $20.00. They are available in shades that flatter most brow colors (and avoid muddy, gray or green undertones). Choose from: Blonde; Auburn: (the warmest red brow color, but not too red and not too orange. Also great for brunettes that have a lot of warm red tones in their hair for a different brow look); Ash Brown: (popular, perfect brown brow color that blends with all brown brows from light to medium shades); and Dark Brunette: (for extremely dark brown to black brows). I tried Auburn and applied it with a fingertip (a brow brush is a better tool). It is amazing how just a small amount of color defines brows and make eyes, pop! Tip: choose a shade slightly lighter than your eyebrow color. For travel, this silky, pressed powder brow shadow multi-tasks as an earthy eye shadow, or wet, as a shadow liner.

Nite-Brow Shadow $20.00 have more intense color and shimmer/sparkle to make brows stand out at night. The look is glamorous, not gaudy. You can also use these are eye shadows and shadow liners. "Wana" is a shimmering blonde gold; "Big Time" is for redheads and has a touch of sparkle; "Hot Pants" offers brunettes a shimmering warm bronze for medium brown brows and for darker to black brows, there's "Sin City," a chocolate with golden glitter. Tip: try these wet for intense color.

High-Lite Shadow $20.00 helps define your eyebrows. The shadow also adds a shimmery glow to distract your eye from unruly hairs if you are growing back over-zealously plucked brows, or you haven't had time to groom your brows. These shadows also multi-task as light, shimmery eye shadows, or as a face/body highlighter. I tried "Canary," a shimmering golden yellow highlight that is Elke's best seller. I also loved it in several layers of color as an evening eye shadow, perfect with a bronze liner. There's also "Cyber Glow" a glamorous, frosted golden yellow with sparkles; "Sugar" a 3-d matte white with a pearlized finish makes that is reminiscent of abalone; and "White Star," offering a glittery snow-white for starry evenings! Tip: use white highlights for light skin tones and golden yellow highlights for medium to darker skin tones.

There are two other indispensable brow products you can purchase from Elke's web site that are clear and guys love them too:

Brow Tamer $16.00 is a pot of eyebrow wax that is water-resistant and keeps too-long brow hairs from flying out and away without being obnoxiously sticky. Tip: use this alone, or before applying brow shadow to create a stronger eyebrow shade and after brow color to keep brow pencil color in place and create a softer brow. Brow Ware $16.00 is a wanded, clear mascara that also keeps your fine eyebrow hairs in check (with a soft hold and a soft sheen). Tip: Just brush through your brows and let it dry. You won't even remember you have it on--but your brows will look better than ever!

Elke is a seriously busy woman. She's not just the creator of The Brow Collection and a Celebrity Makeup Artist in LA & NY and Brooklyn, she's also Editor of The Beauty Ideal Magazine and Founder of the Beauty Blog Network. The video above is for The Model Brow! Visit Elke's web site to view and purchase brow tools and makeup, get makeup tips, and book Elke for your own personal brow services. TIP: if you purchase products for the holidays you'll get free shipping and a free *$10 gift card!

Fabulous Phyto Universe and Caron's Parfum Sacre

It has been a few years since The Advice Sisters have reviewed anything from CARON Paris but recently I attended an event at Phyto Universe in Manhattan (yes, it really is a world of Phyto products including Borujois, Phytomer, Lierac, and Caron, plus salon services. While there, I learned about some of the new products in these chic, covet-able hair, skin, makeup and fragrance lines.

The Advice Sisters will be reviewing some of the newest products from Bourjois, Lierac and Phytomer in the next What Works beauty, cosmetics & fashion review column, but one product that stood out for me was from the famous CARON line of fragrances. At Phyto Universe, there is an entire boutique devoted to these French scents including elegant urns with golden spigots from which you can refill special flacons with your favorite Caron scents. In this beautiful place, I felt as spoiled as Marie Antoinette (but with my head still firmly in place)!

One way to pamper yourself with a special fragrance is to get it in a "collectible" form, such as Caron Parfum Sacre Eau de Parfum $85.00 50ml EDP Spray and $115.00 100ml EDP Spray in in a classic wrapping made modern: Parfum Sacre (launched 1991) is presented here in a slim atomizer wrapped in a royal purple "Galuchat" skin, topped in gold and accented with a small, gold name tag. Galuchat means "sharkskin or stingray skin." It was named after Louis XV's master leather artisan, Jean-Claude Galuchat, who introduced this exotic material to France during the 18th Century. Although Caron actually did use this genuine skin years ago, today's version is embossed cowhide. Parfum Sacre is classified as a spicy oriental, but while it has that exotic, "incense-y" vibe, it is actually quite soft. Unusual about this scent is that it has notes from all of the fragrance categories mixed into one beautiful melange of flowers and spices. One sniff and you know it's special and sophisticated and obviously French (they have just been doing it better than anyone else for a gazillion years)! The feminine blend of flowers and spices starts with spicy pepper and cinnamon plus exotic corriander, with a heart of clove, rose, jasmine and orange, and a drydown that is perfect for special occasion dressing...festive and sensual, but still subtle, consisting of mimosa myrrh, musk, ambrette and vanilla. The mixture might sound strident or heavy, but it's soft as cotton--the kind of scent you give someone's nostrils as a gift--but only if they are close enough to you to really appreciate it!
The new, Galuchet wrapping (see photo) is available in several different and beautiful Caron scents, some of which The Advice Sisters have reviewed in the past:

Nuit de Noel
Fleurs de Rocaille
Bellodgia
Muguet de Bonheur
Narcisse Noir
Infini
Nocturnes (created in 1922 -a rich floriental for the holidays and every day)
Aimez Moi
Lady Caro
Pafum Sacre
For more information visit Phyto Universe in Manhattan (truly a relaxing experience) at Phyto 715 Lexington ave on 58th Street or online: http://www.phytouniverse.com/ or just for Caron, visit: http://www.parfumscaron.com/

celebrations.com Gets You in A Party Mood!

The scene is Manhattan, a chic but affordable cocktail party. Guests, lounging on on purple satin pillows are mingling chatting, laughing while sipping festive cocktails, and nibbling on little bites almost too pretty to bite! The photo above shows such a party...but it's actually an event for celebrations.com, a web site that provides soup-to-nuts resources (literally and figuratively) for sophisticated parties of all types from holiday fetes to bridal showers, or parties "just because."

When I reviewed the packet of press information I received, I realized that this online site is a goldmine of resources, whether you're planning a party, or just feel like getting some inspiration for the future or for you own home. The site features lots of free information, including recipes, decorating ideas, and even the inside scoop on hot celebrity parties thanks to Platinum Rye Entertainment.

Become a member, and you will find a "dashboard" that shows you all of the types of services you will need to plan a party.. For example, the Celebrations.com invitation tool can easily create and personalize an online invitation to fit a unique party style. Celebrations.com members can use their own photos or choose from Celebrations.com's pre-designed photo invitations. Once the invitation is sent, guests can interact on the RSVP page. And, once the party is over, guests can upload and share their photos and stories. You can become a member here:
http://www.celebrations.com/register .

If you're ready to plan the party of a lifetime and need reinforcements, the celebrations.com group of party planning experts are definitely diamond quality: Preston Bailey, an event designer who has planned wedding for everyone from Oprah Winfrey to royal families across the globe; Jeanne Benedict, a lifestyle party expert; Amy Breman, couture pastry chef (how I wish I'd had a chance to sample some of her delicacies!); Andrea Correale, President and Founder of Elegant Affairs, a catering and event firm im Manhattan; Cheryl Dent, a creative food stylist; Karen Diperi, an event producer and co-founder of Tribeca Events; Julie Mulligan, a floral lifestyle expert (celebrations.com is a member of the 1-800-FLOWERS family of brands); Ryan Shinman founder of Platinum Celebrations and a celebrity parties expert; Leanne Shear & Tracey Toomey freelance writers and "cocktail therapists;" Diana Dornan Heather, senior editor and producer of celebrations.com and Lara Schriftman, partner in Harrison & Schriftman public relations and a definite party expert. Here are some photos from the celebrations.com event that I received showing really fast and easy ways to dress up your holiday party at the last minute with items you are likely to have just floating around in your house. Gather some friends. Gather the nibbles and drinks, get inspiration from these ideas (more on the web site) and you have an instant holiday-worthy party!

Dress up a bookshelf with tiny votive candles, placed in pretty glasses. TIP: be sure never to leave candles burning, unattended. TIPS: If you have small children at your party, use battery powered votives instead of real ones, for safety's sake. Don't place any candles where they could be easily knocked over and start a fire.

Purchase a giant cocktail glass *you can get these from crafts stores and florists supply and fill it with an elegant bouquet. this one has orchids, but you can get the same effect with less pricey blooms (or try silk for a longer lasting centerpiece)

Core apple and place votives inside, for a holiday-perfect centerpiece!

Slatkin & Co Bath & Bodyworks - The Scent of a Holiday

If you're heading to the mall this weekend, the best place to find most (if not all) of your gift-ables will be Bath & Bodyworks. They've got a wide range of scented items including adorable, holiday-themed candles, and lots of other items to scent a room by Slatkin & Co. The scents are really to die-for and each item is generously fragranced so you can really add scented atmosphere to a room. Of course, scented items also make great, one-size-fits-all gifts. None of these cost a fortune, but they are sure to add something special to your holidays!

The cutest are the candles poured into adorable snowman and penguin shaped vessels. Who could resist them? I liked the Slatkin & Co. 9 oz. Snowman Candle $35.00 in "Evergreen" (5.50z version $16.50). Remove the top, which is his top hat, and find a white candle in "Evergreen" scent - a fresh green fir balsam blended with sparkling mint, cool pine and spicy clove, with a smoky touch of white birch and dark woods. 8 1/4" height x 8" diameter Snowman jar can hold other decorative items after use (not for food consumption) There's a matching mug $7.50 and a cookie jar $25.00. Another version features a white and silver penguin in a spicy, uplifting "Cinnamon Stick" scent redolent with spicy cinnamon plus pink peppercorn, clove buds and nutmeg. It's sure to delight z"boys and girls," of all ages.

I also like the medium-sized, The 4.5 oz Decorated Votive Candles $10.00 Holly, Wreath, Christmas Tree, and silvery Snowflake designs (wreath shown in the photo). These make any atmosphere festive and they're strongly and nicely scented with holiday scents of Tree, Frosted Cranberry, Winter, and Spice. The set of four would make an impressive gift for a boss or hostess.

For something that you don't have to light with a match to enjoy, Slatkin & Co offers Wallflowers $15.00. These fragrance diffusers have self-contained fragrance bulbs. They're perfect for the office party gift bag, for a stocking stuffer, a hostess gift, or just to bring a smile to someone special. The most festive versions for the holidays feature a cute penguin, or a Santa. These are not ordinary diffusers...they light up and feature a glittery "bubbler" that sparkles when plugged into an outlet. Even better, these are refillable and can be used in vertical or horizontal outlets simply by twisting the prongs to the right or left. The clear, cello covered box looks like a "snow globe" so all you need is a bow and a gift card to get them ready to give.
Slatkin & Co. also offers dozens of fragrance options with their classic Scentport Fragrance Diffuser Starter Kit $12.50 that comes with a base unit and a scent unit to "plug" into the base. There are at least 15 scents to suit every mood, from holiday-ready Evergreen, to Creamy Caramel and Creamy Nutmeg, to florals and fruits, and even Fresh Linen! Simply plug these into any functioning outlet and you'll get a lightly diffused scent in your space for 4-6 weeks. Refills 2 x $20.00 are available for the Scentport so you only have to purchase the base unit, once. TIP: the Scentport also comes in a lighted version -- you get a multi-tasking fragrance diffuser and a nightlight in one!

My personal favorite scented item from Slatkin & Co is another version of the Scentport--the Scentportable $5.00. This circular plastic clip has a non-refillable scent packet in the middle. No electricity is needed for this scent diffuser and you can clip it to just about anything. Right now I still have a bit of Pumpkin scent from Halloween, but soon I'll switch to one of the holidays scents, such as "Evergreen" which arrives in a cheerful, holiday-worthy red, white and green-striped version. These truly inexpensive items last about a month, and diffuse a light scent that won't overpower, but still smells yummy. There are about nine scents if I counted correctly, but for the holidays, try the more unique, limited edition Cinnamon & Clove Buds, Evergreen, Tree, and Cinnamon Stick. TIP: Mine is always clipped to the visor in my car, to make it smell wonderful.

Even more low-tech are The Perfect Christmas Concentrated Room Sprays $5.00 1.5 fl. oz. These holiday spray scents come in mini, silvery cans with pretty red, silver or green metallic tops, and in amazingly wonderful scents like Frosted Cranberry (white cranberry, juicy peach, wild strawberr, sparkling Raspberry) and Winter (pine, bay leaves, cinnamon and warm Winter woods); Tree (douglas fir, sweet musk, warm vanilla) or Spice (cinnamon, spiced orange peel, an sweet vanilla cream). One of two spritzes of scent will significantly and immediately scent your area. They also also perfect stocking stuffers TIP: Leave one of these near your bedside to help fuel dreams of Christmas sugarplums! Be sure to put one in your bathroom to feel the holiday spirit no matter what you are doing (and to sweeten the air when you leave, too).

Another nice gift is the Wallflower Pluggable Home Fragrance Set $12.50 or 2/$20.00 (refills available). This electronically-assisted scent diffuser doesn't light up or bubble, but the graceful, frosted glass, amphora-shaped fragrance bulb starts to dispense your chosen scent into your room within minutes 24/7 from 6-8 weeks while plugged into a functioning 120 volt electrical outlet. It isn't quite as strongly scented as the other products, so if you crave a more subtle scented area, this works wonderfully. Mine was in the Evergreen scent, but there are more than a dozen others to choose from. TIP: Having guests? Plug it in near the cat box or Fido's food bowl.

36th Annual International Emmy Awards In NYC!

Last night I was on the red carpet to report on the 36th Annual International Emmy Awards of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (the largest organization of global broadcasters, with members from nearly 70 countries and over 400 companies). Every November, there is a television festival and Awards Gala in New York City. This black-tie event attracts over 1,200 major figures in broadcast, entertainment and media from around the world.

It was an interesting experience to be standing next to the stars most Americans know, such as Judith Light and Lance Reddick, even though they were mostly the presenters, and the nominees are virtually unknown to the American viewing audience. This group is attending for "Mi Problema con las Mujeres" (My Problem with Women) from Peru (they didn't win this time).

The stars and their companions stroll down the red carpet, stopping to do interviews with the press. The television crews are set up on a platform directly opposite the red carpet sponsor's backdrop and the stars spend a lot of time there, of course, before sauntering past the photographers (more time) and then down to video, and then at the very end of the line, the Internet press. This red carpet was outside so women with no coats or wraps must have been freezing by the end of the walk. Of course, they never show it!

But most of the stars are accommodating even if they're at the end and right at the door (and more than ready to go inside and get warm again). I was standing with my friend, actress Cognac Wellerlane of Cognacs Corner in the video section although this time, I wasn't interviewing anyone specifically. Most of the stars were more than willing to stop to talk to Cognac (visit Coganac's Corner to see her celebrity interviews). I snapped these photos of Cognac with some of the presenters: Both Sam Waterston and Sex & the City's Willie Garson; Lance Reddick (from Lost); Judith Light (she looks a little cold...I know we certainly were and we were't baring any skin) and model Marcus Schenkenberg in a strking, black trench coat.

Of course there are glamorous gowns. This one's by Marchesa. Almost every woman was asked over and over again: "what are you wearing?" It surprised me that many of them really had no idea, or were wearing something fabulous but "vintage" from a family member's closet!

Both sides of the street were virtually blocked off for the International Emmys and a movie premier for Australia, starring Nicole Kidman. Every now and then the street appeared to be on fire with the flash of cameras. Ms. Kidman arrived. I raised my camera, and planned to zoom in from a distance ( I knew I wouldn't be allowed any closer) but as I stood there for literally, seconds, a security guard materialized. The security guard's hand across my face got much closer than in this photo.

The red carpet on our side of the street, completed, the stars and nominees have dinner and then the awards show begins. As someone who regularly covers the craziness of Fashion Week, this press room seemed amazingly relaxed and pleasant. We were able to watch the awards ceremony on a live feed from the awards ceremony (virtually next door). As as each award was presented, the winners and the presenter were brought in to the press room for photos and interviews. Cognac snagged an interview with Presenter John Waters.

These happy men were Winners!

I always remind myself that I am there to photograph and report on others, not to be photographed myself, but I did allow a photo with Coganc Wellerlane in the press room at the end of a long evening!

What Does Your Name Smell Like/ Scent of Name Has the Answer

The Advice Sisters rarely review products for young people, but I recently discovered a unique company, Rosemarys Potpourri with a Scent of Name® line that features a fragrance for every name. The company says that they research the meaning behind each name to create a fragrance that reflects that name. The Rosemarys Potpourri Personalized Perfume $7.00 1/3 fl. oz. comes in all the standard names, but if yours is spelled in a unique way or it's a completely unique name, the company will still come up with a scent scent just for your name! The Scent of Name® personalized perfumes are oil based so they really last, too. I like the fact that the packaging is a rollerball --an efficient and portable way to wear scent. The Scent of Name® personalized perfumes are oil based and they are strong and long-lasting. You can also get a gift set in a tin for $12.95 with your Scent of Name® in Lotion, Body Wash and Shampoo. The 1oz containers make it great for travel.

Whether or not there was any true research behind the name scents, the idea of a personalized scent is appealing to young and old. My parents named me "Alison" with one "L." I believe it is the English version of the name and generally reserved for boys (although I've never met a boy named Alison in England, or anywhere else) so I don't know what my parents were thinking! In the United States, Alison is spelled with two 'L's not one, so even though as a child, I coveted all those "personalized" pens, pads, mugs, key chains, hats, etc. none were ever available in my name (or with name name spelled correctly).

The idea is delightful, although the scents, (for me), fell a bit short. To be fair, this is a fun idea, not a substitute for Chanel or Dior or even a drugstore scent. The company makes it obvious that it's a novelty. The girly pink packaging is designed to delight little girls and teenagers and states that the scents are non toxic and all natural (plus the web site says the products are good for ages 3+ --something you're not likely to find on a designer scent). As a child,I would have been thrilled beyond words to see my name on the perfume label (spelled correctly). I do wish the company had gone one step further and provided some real information about the meaning of my name or why the specific scent was chosen --that would have been a nice touch.

Do you know what your name smells like? I didn't have a clue what the company would come up with for Alison spelled in one "L." My "Alison" scent was slightly musky and wouldn't have been inappropriate for a young girl. The other fragrance rollerball sample I tried was for the name, "Kimberly." The fruity musk was very sweet, and it reminded me of the fragrance oils that are popular fare with vendors --it persisted even when I scrubbed!

If you want to thrill a young girl, this is the perfect gift, and it costs less than a sandwich and a drink! It's also a cute idea for sweet 16 parties.

Jilian Dempsey for Avon Essential Beauty Palettes for Day, For Evening, For the Holidays

Yesterday, I shared a review of Patrick Dempsey's new fragrance, "Unscripted" for Avon. Today it's his wife Jilian Dempsey's turn to shine for Avon. What a power couple!

Jilian's holiday offering includes two makeup palettes for Avon called "Jilian Dempsey for Avon Essential Beauty." They are impressive, affordable palettes to help you look your best this holiday season (or to give to someone who loves great makeup).

The cheerful, exotic, cardboard compact with magnetic closure has a modern Moroccan design of geometric florals in bright shades of red, purple and yellow, (easy to find in your handbag), Inside there's a mirror and of course, universally five shades of universally flattering color in both a warm palette and a cool palette. Impressive!

But the makeup inside is what really counts. In this collection, each palette contains two Ultra Color Rich Lipstick Colors that offer moisturizing color and shine (and even better, they've got Vitamin E and Jojoba to hydrate and seal in moisture for smoother, sexier lips). Our Warm palette included a "Delicate Rose," a deep rose and "Peony Pink," a warm apricot-y pink; plus a Be Blushed Cheek Color in "Golden Rose" that offered the sheerest, coral glow that looked warm and natural on everyone. Rounding out the grouping are two cream eye shadows in "Stone" (brown) and "Burnished Bronze," (shimmery bronze) that you easily apply with a sponge tip or a fingertip. They're soft and luxuriously creamy. Blend them for a soft, sheer wash of color (layer more for more intensity) and wear them as-is, or layered for a more multi-dimensional look.

The Cool palette (shown here in the photo) includes Ultra Color Rich Lipstick in Sheer Red and Peony Pink, Jillian Dempsey Professional Cream Eyeshadow in Sheer Ice and Sheer Pink and Be Blushed in Golden Rose.

What I love about these palettes is that both can take you from day to night," says Jilian. "The Cool palette lets you create a softer, shimmery eye and a bolder lip while the Warm palette creates a more dramatic sparkly eye and a paler lip. And they’re perfectly portable making them essential for a quick holiday makeover,” she adds.

Jillian is a superb makeup artist, and she handpicked the shades for lips, cheeks and eyes. She definitely knows what she is doing! The palettes are modern and user-friendly, lovely and so wearable. And, for less than the cost of lunch and even on a bare-bones budget, you can afford a new makeup collection to take your holiday look from day to night during the holidays and all the way through the Winter.

These palettes are limited edition, but will be available from November 2008-February 2009. Visit www.avon.com or call 800-FOR-AVON. For additional color trends and tips visit Jilian's website at www.avon.com/jiliandempsey.

Patrick Dempsey Unscripted by Avon-McDreamy Makes a McYummy Scent!

When a celebrity puts his or her name and face to a fragrance, it’s a sure bet that consumers will flock to buy it.

The brand new, Patrick Dempsey Unscripted Eau de Toilette $32.00 2.5 fl. oz. exclusively from Avon is so affordable, women will run to buy it in droves , hoping to make their men more “McDreamy.” In case you’ve been avoiding prime-time television, Mr. Dempsey plays a yummy-looking doctor with the nicknameMcDreamy” on the television drama, Greys Anatomy. But just because Dempsey is meltingly adorable, doesn't mean the fragrance will be pleasing to men...and it is a man's fragrance.

As a beauty reviewer, I believe that it is important to really evaluate the quality of pleasure factor of the fragrance inside the bottle first and not just dwell on a pretty face (oh, but Patrick is so gorgeous)! I decided to take this scent to my male reviewer first without telling him anything about it. I sprayed in on him and waited for his reaction. "This smells really nice," he immediately said...noting that there was some kind of fruit (he said peach, it’s actually fig) and a very strong, sexy, masculine bottom of sandalwood (it is actually leatherwood). As drydown occurred, our perceptive male reviewer said it smelled more “marine” than at the beginning (it’s actually more herbal and clean).

Patrick Dempsey’s wife Jillian is an accomplished makeup artist who has done some wonderful collections, also for Avon. Doubtless, her husband knows more about what goes into scent than most men (and apparently he did have a leading role in the actual design of the fragrance). The creators of the scent are perfumers Yves Cassal and Pascal Guarin, who also worked on Avon’s Ungaro U by Ungaro For Him (reviewed in our September/Otober Fall What Works column) The notes include a top of cardamom and cracked black peppercorns, followed by a middle of fig and lavender, with a masculine drydown of exclusive leatherwood (like sandalwood but a bit less incense-y), patchouli heart, vitiver and musk. The category of scent is: “green woody." It's herbal, it's spicy, it has a hint of floral but overall, it's light and masculine and sexy.

While I obviously don’t know Patrick Dempsey personally (anytime you want to get acquainted, Patrick, just email me!) this new scent also seems to have his obvious visual characteristics of “sexy and stylish without even trying" and in fact, the same phrase appears in the press info for the fragrance. Even the simple, modern packaging is elegant “without even trying," The outer carton is a gradiated brownish mauve with tiny orange accents. Inside a really attractive, bold, strong, simple, square glass bottle with matte black cap has unisex appeal.

Patrick Dempsey Unscripted Eau de Toilette will be a must-get for women will be enjoying the scent on their guys, and must-get for men, who will be enjoying the attention they get from their ladies. Avon has really stepped up the quality and presentation of their fragrances in the past few years, working with couture designers and now, celebrities, to create fragrances that offer luxury at a reasonable price. In this economic climate, we should definitely say “thank you!”

Sedu Nano Tourmaline Ionic Styler - A Sound Investment

Unless you are one of the fortunate few, born with perfect, shiny, sleek hair, getting that look means using a styling tool. Alas, when you apply high heat to your hair, over and over again, you can really damage it.

The Sedu Nano Tourmaline Ionic Styler $139.00 srp. is a sleek, matte, lightweight, flat iron with an ergonomically designed body. The 1" plates let you quickly get the look you want, with minimal consequences to your hair. There are so many flat irons on the market, but when you're investing in a high-end appliance, you want to know what makes it superior. Some of Sedu's high-tech features include:

Infrared ceramic heating element that produces gentle moisturizing, less damaging heat so you style fast as well as safer.

1" Tourmaline ionic plates that allow even heat distribution and prevent “hot spots.” Nano Tourmaline Ceramic Technology create negative ions that help eliminate frizz and close the cuticles to create smooth, shiny hair.

Adjustable temperature control that allows for various temperature settings to best suit different hair types and styling needs from 180 degrees all the way to 450 degrees (at that temperature it will tackle even seriously thick, coarse and frizzy hair).

A great features is Sedu's "Freestyle Guiding System." In many irons, strands of hair can slip and fall out of the plates and get stuck, resulting in snagging, pulling and frizz. Sedu's flat iron has anti-slip, edges on the plates that capture all of the strands, and the curved edge plates allow for smooth styling without creating kinks or frizz.

Traditional irons hair strands slip and fall out of plates. Stray hair can be trapped between plates and the body of the iron, resulting in snagging, pulling and frizz, but Sedu's curved edge plates capture the hair so it stays sleek,.

Sedu offers a whopping 24 month warranty on this iron and packages it with extras, such as a heatproof pouch (so you can stow and go, even when the iron is still hot) and a Sedu Revolution Styling Iron, Hair Styling Instruction DVD (a good basic how-to and a $19.00 value) When money is tight, it's not always the best idea to purchase the cheapest item....good styling tools, properly cared for, last much longer and give you better results.

I have reviewed plenty of flat irons on the Advice Sisters What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review columns but the Sedu iron is really an exceptional one. My hair is fairly wavy and thick, but the Sedu Revolution Nano Tourmaline Ionic Styling Iron worked like a high powered steamroller, smoothing the strands immediately, and leaving my hair soft and straight and shiny. It was easy to flip up and curve ends under with the rounded edge design. The iron heated up quickly, but the included "hot pocket" allowed me to "stow and go" without fear of burning the house down. The feel of the iron is substantial, and the long cord made it easy to reach around wherever I needed to move the iron without pulling or tugging. The controls and power switch are, like most irons, on the inside of the iron and the lighted on/off switch lets you see whether or not your iron is still on (especially important if you tend to get distracted). I even liked the hard-sided presentation box with magnetic closure that the iron is packaged in!

This iron may cost a bit more than the cheap ones in the bargain store, but it really helps you get a salon look at home. It looks nice, it feels good in your hand, and it will get you real results. I've been getting compliments on my hair but I haven't done anything different other than use the Sedu iron. Now that's impressive! I know the compliments I receive are really for the Sedu Revolution Nano Tourmaline Ionic Styling Iron!

This would make a fantastic gift for a special person, but it's a "must-have" for every woman who craves great, straight hair. Sedu can be found at http://www.folica.com/, ULTA stores and professional salons nationwide.

Givenchy Holiday Makeup is the New Must-Have Holiday Accessory

This year, the party season's biggest designer accessories, may not be handbags, shoes orjewelry, but designer makeup. Purchasing a beautifully packaged and luxurious lipgloss costs far less than a couture gown, but it's a way to wear something fashionable and high-end without going broke. One venerable designer synonymous with everything chic, is Hubert de Givenchy. The photo above is a quick view of the Givenchy 2008 holiday collection

Givenchy's Pop Gloss Crystal $22.50 in two special, limited edition shades (there are 20 other shades) is my favorite holiday "must-have." The gloss makes me feel special every time I apply it, but still in control of my budget. The limited edition, only-at-Sephora holiday shades are: "Plum by Night" that coats lips with glittery shimmer, shine, glam and a deep, sexy berry; and "Rose by Night," a light, shimmery pink that gives you lips that look as luscious as "Angelina's" without any effort at all.
This silky, shiny gloss arrives in a sleek, square, clear, wanded tube, and the limited edition shades for this season feature bunches of starry fireworks, festively surrounding the tube and the shiny, black cap. The gloss is so lightweight on your lips you won't remember you have it on. However, while it's beautifying your lips, it's benefitting them with moisturizers, and castor oil and an exclusive, good-for-your-lips "Pulp Shine Complex" with active ingredients that help make lips actually look more vibrant. The gloss also features " Vitalip" to exfoliate and stimulate new cells. During the colder months, this is especially important if you don't want cracked, dull, rough looking lips (and who, does?)

Another good to have product from Givenchy is the Mister Bright Touch Of Light Pen $31.50. A black-bodied, silvery-topped click it pen with brush is a fusion of a concealer and highlighter in one soft-bristled pen. The Givenchy Touch of Light Pen in "Dawnlight" features a pearly-pink tint and particles of pink mother of pearl. It's mightier than a sword, when helping you to undo some of the tell-tale signs of late night revelry. It works to fade imperfections and draw the eye's attention away from lines, spots, and shadows. Use this clean-easy, tote-able, effective product to illuminate the inner corners of your eyes to illuminate, reduce the look of dark circles, or to add a strategic glow to your face.
Visit www.sephora.com for more Givenchy holiday products including these exclusives. Needless to say, anything from Givenchy will make a very welcome gift!

Diversion: A Serious Problem You Should Know About

The word "diversion" has several meanings, the most popular being a distraction, or a detour. When it comes to beauty products, however, the word "diversion" isn't just a distraction...it's a serious issue we should all be aware of:

At an event I attended last week sponsored by L’Oreal Professionnel, David Craggs, President of L’Oreal USA, explained to somewhat stunned, bloggers and online journalists, that "diversion" also means the selling of branded beauty products in unauthorized outlets both on and off-line. L'Oreal's products include some of the most popular salon brands on the market (e.g. Kerastase, Redken, Shu Uemura Art of Hair, Matrix, and Pureology...just to name a few).

Products marked "for professional and salon use" are designed and meant to be sold only at authorized salons. Alas, these products also show up in popular places such as mass market retailers, major drugstores, and beauty supply shops, supermarkets, and even at flea markets. Since these retailers include chain stores and other places that legitimately stock products from other manufacturers, unsuspecting consumers may not realize that some of the products they are purchasing in these outlets may actually be those "diverted" from approved sources. The sale of diverted professional beauty products hurts the bottom line of the salon owners and the beauty professionals who sell them, but it can hurt you, too, in more ways than one.

The Cost of Diverted Goods: Purchasing these items from non-authorized outlets can hurt your wallet. Although "discount" or "bargain" stores advertise lower prices, undercover research has found that diverted products are rarely cheaper from unauthorized outlets, and, in fact, you are likely to end up paying significantly more than the suggested retail price in the salon.

Even worse, buying and using diverted goods could be dangerous to your health and well being!

Diverted Goods = Potential Harm: Diverted goods may be outdated by years, meaning that they're no longer as effective. The containers could be dirty or dented. But even more troubling is the fact that the container and the contents could have been tampered with, watered down, or worse, completely faux! How would you feel if that expensive treatment you bought with high hopes for better hair, turned out to be not a high-tech luxury, but harsh washing detergent? You never can tell what an unscrupulous distributor might do to make money, to your detriment. And, even if the product is genuine, many professional products may have higher concentrations of some chemicals that need to be used as directed, or applied only by a trained professional. They could end up being ineffective or worse, harmful in an amateur's hands.

Discerning Diverted Goods: The packaging, at first glance, may look perfect, but a tell-tale sign of diverted goods is that the batch codes and tracking codes (bar codes) may be obliterated so the items can't be traced. Also look for expiration dates. The cap or label may not match the bottle. And, if a product's container is damaged, faded or dirty, those are tip-offs, too.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Since many stores legitimately sell brand name products, you might not realize that they also stock diverted ones. It is shocking to think that your local drugstore or beauty supply would do this, but alas, it happens. The best way to AVOID diverted goods is to simply to buy your hair products from your salon. If you don't go to a salon for styling and treatments, you can still purchase products at the salon. Salons WANT you to purchase items from them, and will welcome you to do so even if you don't go there for any services or treatments. If you have purchased professional salon products outside of a salon, and find that you have purchased diverted goods from an unauthorized outlet, the first thing you can do is bring back the items to the store, and tell the manager that you are aware that the items are grey market goods. Show your concern. Tell the manager you will tell
others about the situation in that store. You can also contact the appropriate distributor for the store and call the manufacturer. Finally, you can share what you have just learned from reading this Advice Sisters blog post with others who might not be aware of this issue. Stumble it, for example, and tell your other favorite review and blog authors not to direct you to non-authorized sites for these types of items. If they don't respond, switch your readership!

David Craggs & Alison Blackman

What The Advice Sisters Is Doing To Combat Diversion:

I was one of these unsuspecting beauty experts until last year, when someone brought this issue to my attention. I felt absolutely terrible that for 10 years I'd been reviewing beauty products on the Advice Sisters What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column and didn't realize that some of the links I offered (without compensation, just as a service to readers) directed them to outlets that might be offering diverted goods.

Beginning this year, our Advice Sisters What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review columns include this important statement: **It has come to our attention that some of the brands we review in this "What Works" column may be sold outside of company-sanctioned outlets, where the products you purchase may be expired, or perhaps, copycat items. We will direct you to the company's own web site or authorized sales outlets, so you can find sites both online and off-line that will sell you genuine products. We don't receive compensation from the companies for links in this buying guide....we do it as a service for YOU, our readers..... Advice Sister Alison." The Advice Sisters are more careful to direct readers to company web sites for shopping and purchasing information.

I type everything, even shopping lists, but I added my name to a pledge to fight diversion the the l'Oreal event. You can see my "chicken scratch" floating near the top of the pledge statement. You can also see the same 7 minute film we watched about diversion (see video below) I urge you to take a moment to view it.

Beautiful Bobbi Brown Makeup for the Holidays-

If you've read my What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column for a while (and it's been around for a decade), you know that I'm a personal fan of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. The high quality makeup just works for everyone from the truly clueless, right up to the most sophisticated makeup fan-shionista.

If anyone knows how to put together a great palette or face-in-a-case kit, it's Bobbi Brown. I look forward to reviewing them every season, as Bobbi Brown intrinsically knows how to select a minimum of perfect colors that amazingly, always turn out to be just what you need (no more, no less) to perfect a trendy but always wearable look for that season. View Video of Bobbi Creating Her Copper Diamond Look.

For this 2008 holiday Season, , Bobbi Brown shines like never before. I particularly like the latest, new, Bobbi Brown's Basics Lip Palette $45.00. Inside the by-now iconic, shiny black mirrored compact with white Bobbi Brown logo on the cover, are four, brand new, generously-sized portions of high shine glosses and lipsticks and a nice, mini-sized lip brush applicator. Each of the shades can be worn alone or mixed together for a personalized look. Starting at the left side is a clear lip gloss with tons of light-reflecting shimmer called "Naked." It's pretty to wear solo or to add shimmer and shine to another lip color. Next to it is "Posey Shimmer Lip Gloss," a very soft, sheer, pink-ish nude. Also soft and warm is "Brownie" lip color in a soft, browned red, and on the right hand side, "Rum Raisin" Lip color in a berried brown. What's really great about these colors is that no matter what your complexion, they will look natural and flattering. When you start mixing a shimmery gloss with one of the lip colors, you can make a daytime look, quite glam without trying too hard.

Another great for yourself, fabulous for a gift Palette is the new, Bobbi Brown Limited Edition Lip and Eye Palette $60.00. A two-tiered, black mirrored compact holds mini-sized lip brush with cap, and mini eye shadow brush. There's also four brand-new, exclusive shades of long-wearing, moistly-matte, Creamy Lip Color on the top level (Berry Mauve, Pink Sequinm Dusty Mauve, and Ruby, and four brand-new, exclusive, gorgeous, high-shimmer Metallic Eye Shadows (Champagne Quartz, Gold Dust, Galaxy, and Golden Bronze) on the bottom level. * I apologize for the poor photos but for some reason we didn't get the usual CD of photos with our products, this time.

Available in November, the limited-edition Copper Diamonds collection also includes one of Bobbi’s most beloved products in a new color: the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick $40.00 in "Copper Diamond." The large, eye-catching square of super-shimmery pressed powder combines five different shades (candelight, gold, copper, beige and sand) to create a soft warm golden copper glow (or use each separately). I have dabbed individual bands of shimmer brick on eyes, lips and cheeks, and even dusted them lightly all over for a glamorous glow. This new Shimmer Brick was featured in "W" Magazine (Nov 2008). What's unique about this new Shimmer Brick is the golden compact with a top featuring an insert of golden, grained, leatherette embossed with the Bobbi Brown logo. If anything is "merry & bright" for the holidays, this is absolutely it!

There are a number of even more luxe kits and gifts, all clad in golden packaging. Check them out Bobbi Brown Cosmetics at your favorite department store (online or off-line) or visit http://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com/ and buy online.

The Gift of Memories (or Memory) ScanDigital helps you save yours for a lifetime

My father was an accomplished and avid photographer (among other numerous talents) who never missed an opportunity to take a photo (here, he's at the helm of the Gemini , in a rare photo he didn't take).
As a result of dad's hobby, we had to pose a lot growing up, and the family also had an entire wall unit just devoted to boxes of slides.

Dad passed away in March, and I inherited these slides. I definitely wanted to preserve them, along with the still photos and movies he took over the years. The problem was that I don't have a house with a wall I could dedicate to dad's slides (not to mention my husband didn't embrace the idea). Worse, even though dad had stored the images as best he could, many of the older slides had already faded so the images were barely discernable, and others had almost completely lost their vibrant color.

How to save and enjoy our family's images? The answer was obvious: digitize them!

There are quite a few places you can digitize slides, and the costs are modest. But I worried that if I sent my priceless slides in the mail and they were lost, I'd be lost, too. Eventually it became clear to me that the only reasonably priced way to digitize slides, photos, or film was to send them out to a company that specializes in these activities. One that seemed good and that I selected, was ScanDigital http://www.scandigital.com/

The first step was to register for an online account (as easy and straightforward as is everything on the web site--absolutely a no-brainer). Not so easy was the one part ScanDigital can't do for you: decide what images you want to keep. For me, that was the most challenging part of the process. Unless you are going to just send every slide you ever took (and that's pretty boring to look at later on not to mention costly), you have to be selective. Although I have already sent in a batch of slides, I am still working through this process and learned from my first experience that you really do need to organize the slides you select in batches and mark them. or you'll have a hodgepodge when you get them back in digitized form.

Scan Digital has "starter packagers" where they will digitize 100 photos, slides or negatives for just $89.95, but almost no one who has family slides and photos will be able to keep to just 200 items total. The most popular package ScanDigital sells is 250 slides, photos or negatives for $319.95 (you can do up to 1,000 slides, photos or negatives for $599.95). If you just want to order "a la carte" as I did, it's 68 cents per 2000 dpi 35mm slide and 88 cents per 4000 35mm dpi slide (the rest of the prices are reasonable, and very clearly stated on the prices page on the website.

The next step is to decide what format you want your digitized images in. I chose images on a CD, because I wanted to have the flexibility of that medium. But you can also get a slide show $99 additional complete with all the bells and whistles the pros would give you and ScanDigital even sells a digital photo frame onto which they will automatically put up to 1000 images for an additional $129.00. You can also select your resolution: normal or High (additional 20 cents each item).
Then there's the issue of how to pack your slides. This worried me a great deal because humidity, light, and temperature could further deteriorate the older slides, and ruin newer ones. I chose the DigiPack $10.00 additional because it offered me a pre-paid UPS label directly from ScanDigital along with packing material and instructions. This seemed to be the most secure way to ship the slides back (I added more packing material because I had metal-framed slides in my box and I wanted to be sure they didn't damage the other ones). You can feel secure using UPS and a well-wrapped box of your own to save the $10 if you choose. In either case, I suggest putting your slides in groups, in zip-lock bags you label specifically with the content and in what order you want the bunches of slides to appear.

After UPS picked up the box, I had a nervous moment, but ScanDigital was communicative by email and I felt much better after I knew they received the box back. Not long afterwards, I got my Compact Disk and my slides back in good shape.

You can see the quality of the results for yourself. The only negative (no pun intended ) were that my oldest, square, format slides were so color damaged while the technicians did a good job in restoring the images, in some cases the color was off, or faded or had spots on the image. The first photo of the very young "Advice Sisters" in yellow tops was one of the format slides and as you can see, the color and clarity is fine. The slide of my sister and I and our cousin Hilary and Cat, was a later slide that also looks fine. The bottom slide of my always glamorous mother, reclining on a couch, has yellow dots. But damaged format slides like this one would not have survived at all without ScanDigital's intervention. There is only so much you can do when a slide is already in bad shape. The rest of my slides were there for me to enjoy in living color. ScanDigital also lets you view your photos online, re-organize and make your own slide show, and even order prints or get gift cards.

When I had questions, ScanDigital responded quickly. I really needn't have worried. It was really easy, and now I have my images in a format that I can use to watch any time I feel like it, or upload to a digital photo frame on my own, or print out, or add to a T-shirt or coffee mug, or use any way I wish! After going through the process once with a test batch of slides, I am actually eager to complete my own, personal, digitized library.

The holidays are coming. This year, why not give a gift of digital images? It is a gift that really does last (almost) forever and that is personal and will be loved by everyone. Whether your offer up a gift card for digitizing services or create your own trip down memory lane, your gift will be a hit. Or, simply do your kids a favor and dump your collection of bulky slide trays and photo albums for a more modern and storage-friendly option that will not only save your images from fading and for future generations, but that will ensure that no one will ever dump them in the "to ditch" bin when you're not around anymore.

Eveden Lingerie A Full Figured Girl's Fantasy and How to Buy A Bra

Some people say it's better nutrition, some says it's due to the hormones in chicken, some say it's just due to mother nature's generous nature, and some admit it's artificial intervention, but the average bust size in the United States continues to grow to the continued delight of some, and the inability to find a comfy bra, to others!

NO matter what size you are, Eveden, a UK-based company of lingerie & swimwear, is soothing tired shoulders and backs, and eliminating the pinching and tugging of full-figured women. In addition, while there have been few options for women with large bras sizes petite to plus sized, these new bras are not only well made and fit well, they are

Eveden's five distinct lines of lingerie start with the least expensive, Fantasie, with average prices comparable to budget brands in chain stores, moving up in price to Freya and then Fauve(the beige bra is "Emanuelle," the red "Nicolle" from the Winter collection). All of the bras but especially Goddess, and Elomi, are engineered to provide a perfect fit up to a European K cup. The Elomi brand offers lingerie for the fullest figures with bra band sizes up to 52 and a H cup. There are also bras to suit nursing and new moms along with some good sports bras.

There's really something for everyone and at every price point when it comes to the Eveden lines. Although Fauve is the most expensive, perhaps the kind of lingerie the average woman purchases for a wedding or special occasion, the other brands are reasonably comparable to the other brands in the budget and medium brands out there. But viewing the collections up close, I can't say that I really liked one collection more than another. All have a suite of items: bras, matching panties, in some cases a garter belt or corset. And all come in either relatively plain styles, or all-out sexy ones with lace, color and even bows. And there's the swimsuit lines, too. The main difference is the price point and perhaps, the quality of the fabric and lace. If you're on a beer and peanuts budget, even the less costly Fantasie collection will allow you to fulfill your lingerie longings without making you brown-bag lunch for months. All will allow you to buy a nice-fitting bra that gives you a better shape under clothes, no matter how large you are by nature or surgical intervention!

For more information about Eveden and to find locations in North America visit http://www.eveden.com/

...speaking of which, when I went to see the Eveden collections, I was offered a fitting with Eveden's expert fitters. My own bra was lifting at the back, digging in at the sides, and puckering at the front. I knew it didn't fit. After submitting to a measuring tape, I discovered that my bra size wasn't remotely what I thought it should be. Then the fitter brought in a variety of Eveden bras for me to try on and I learned by experience that not all bras are equal and the fit has less to do with cost, than with getting the right sizes and styles.

The first thing I learned is that while you can DIY, the best way to get a bra that fits and is flattering, and that is worth the money you'll be forking over for it, is to get fitted by a pro. Barring that (although I highly recommend it, and most good lingerie shops and department stores offer this service), here is a basic primer on bras:

ize: Bra sizes are made up of two components. The first is an even number that represents the back size (32, 34, 36, etc.) determined by the size of your torso (use a tape measure or better yet, go to a bra fitter). The second component is a letter that indicates the cup size (A, B, C, etc.) determined by the size of the breast itself. If you find that you are in-between sizes or you are having difficulty finding the correct fit, then if you go up in cup size come down in band size or if you go up in band size come down in cup size. In addition, the placement of the straps matters. Many bras place the straps closer to your armpits but if you're slope shouldered, you want to look for a bra where the straps are a bit closer in towards the middle. Cup size is the same between U.S. and Europe/France. "A" cups (U.S.) = "A" cup in Europe/France, for example, and a B=B, C=C, etc (with some exceptions for "DD" and "DDD" cups. many European brands use the lettering "E" for a DD cup size and "F" for a DDD cup size).

The Band Test: Try this test with your bra hooked on the middle setting: ask someone to put two fingers between your back and the back of your bra, then to turn their hand 90 degrees. The fingers should now be very firmly wedged and the person should not be able to pull the bra further away from your back. A new bra should be able to pass this test with the clasp on the middle fitting - this allows you to tighten the bra as it stretches with wear and washing. New bras should fit on the loosest or the middle hook, never the last one. Ditch bras that no longer fit properly or wear out because they won't provide adequate support or enhance your shape under clothing.

STYLES: Once you know your general size (although like shoes, that can change depending on the brand and the style) it's time to figure out what style of bra you want or need. Generally, the style will be dictated by the type of clothing you are wearing. You definitely need bras in several styles and in basic colors such as nude, white and black. Here are some of the most popular types of styles:

Demi: ‘barely there' coverage offering less coverage than a full cup and more than a balconette.

Balconette: little to no coverage, but balconettes create dramatic uplift and cleavage.

Bralette: an unlined, soft cup bra, which resembles a crop top but without much support.

Contour: these have shaped cups, which are always padded or lined. They often have an underwire.

Convertible: basically describes any bra with straps that detach and can be worn in a variety of ways including – criss-cross, halter, strapless or one shouldered. Convertible bras can be worn with a variety of tops, including boat neck, halter and asymmetrical necklines.

Foam Lined: these have a thinner lining than a padded bra which doesn't add size, but provides additional shaping as well as more modesty.

Full Cup: these bras completely cover most of the breast, offering both more coverage and more support than a demi cup bra.

Minimizer: A minimizer bra reduces the appearance of the bust by up to one cup size.

Molded: these bras have machine molded cups that mirror the natural shape of a woman. They are generally unlined, either soft cup or underwire.

Padded: these have some type of padding lining the cups that is thicker at the base of the cups. This creates a natural looking silhouette as well as the appearance of increased cleavage.

Plunge: these create the appearance of increased cleavage thanks to a deep front, angled cups, and thin center gore.

Push-Up: these create the appearance of increased cleavage using angled cups that are usually with underwires and may have different types of padding including graduated and cookies, and demi cups.

Racerback: for a no-show fit under tank tops.

Soft Cup: these may be padded or lined, but never have underwires.

Sports Bra: designed to offer the appropriate amount of support during moderate to intense physical activity.

T-Shirt Bra: seamless, contoured, and generally made of microfiber to create an ultra smooth look under knits, sweaters or clingy tops.

Underwire: a bra with a thin, flexible wire, which offers added support to the cups of bras, bustiers and shapewear .

It's true, the amount of styles is a bit dizzying, but there are even more styles I didn't even mention here! The key thing is that finding the right bras, even from a company like Eveden with many different sizes, is to try them on. No two styles will ever fit the same way, even within the same company's line. You must try them on. If you don't you'll end up with a drawer full of uncomfortable lingerie you never wear. Resist any bra that looks pinches in the store. no matter how adorable. Like shoes, if the bra bothers you in the store, just wait until you have to be tortured by it all day or evening long! This takes time, but in today's economy, finding items that perform well in a price range that suits your budget, is key to comfort as well as to your bank account.

And here are some other things to check out about fit while you're in the dressing room:

The cup should completely contain the breast with the exception of push-up bras and demi-wire styles. The breast should not spill over the top or sides of the cup. This indicates that the cup may be too small.

The cups must fit smoothly. Gaps or puckering indicate that the cups are too large. However, breast tissue is soft and you may need to push yours up towards the middle of the bra to fill in the cups properly.

The bra should be snug but not too tight around the body. And remember that bras eventually stretch, so don't buy one with a back size too large, or eventually you won't be able to cinch it in on another hook. The back of the bra should stay down and not ride up on the back. This indicates a large band size. Try one band size smaller.

The center of the bra should lie flat against the breastbone without gapping. If it does, the bra is too small.

In general, the large the cup size, the wider the straps will be. The straps should be adjusted to support comfortably without pressure or cutting. If the straps fall off your shoulders or feel itchy or are digging into your skin, ditch that style or try another size.

tibi collection

Tibi's fun and flattering fashions in bright colors and prints are the type of clothes that magically suit just about everyone. Her flirty, mini dresses and evening gowns work for just about any type of event from a dinner date to weddings. As you can see from the puffy fabric "roses" on this bare-shouldered blouse, intricate details are an important part of each design, along with color, and fabulous fabrics. I love these sophisticated clothes that are still lighthearted. Visit the TIBI web site and you'll even hear cheerful music while you browse.

I was really looking forward to the TIBI runway show at Bryant Park back in September, but although I was invited, there just wasn't room for everyone. Later that same week, however, I met Amy Smilovic in person at the American Express Skybox *photo of the two of us and arranged to see the Spring 2009 collection up-close-and-personal after fashion week.

The actual runway show was awash in styles, from Obi-sashed, Asian-style dresses, to harem pants, to bright, mini dresses...

....But there was a lot more to the collection than just the styles that made it down the runway. Here are a few of the TIBI Spring 2009 designs that delighted me when I went to see them in the TIBI showroom:

I loved this looks-good-on-everyone, eye-catching mini dress in TIBI's "Dos Parajos" print. The print showed up on the runway in high waisted, below-the knee dress with a tulip-style, draped hem, a blouse, and another dress with a mandarin collar. And, the long, orange "Geo Beding" evening gown has intricate beading in a Navajo-inspired pattern at the straps and the bodice.

The buttons are part of the detail of the "Ottoman" skirt, and I adored the dress in the same print.

An up-close detail of some of the intricate beading on a blouse. American Indian style beading showed up on a variety of Spring designs --an easy alternative to wearing a lot of jewelery--especially if you are packing light.

....Just like TIBI clothes, the shows have something for everyone, from strappy evening sandals to adorable, colorful flats. My favorite was "SACHA" a red, backstrap sandal with a low, chunky heel and two large, red leather "bows" on two of the three cross straps. DARA is the backless, flatter, "mule" version. ADRIANNA is a gold flat crossed on the side and over the top of the foot with two large, delicate, gold leaves that brings out the goddess in you.

The detailing on this silk blouse features delicate lace. You could wear this top with just about everything you own.

When it's time to hit the beach (or the books, during Summer session), these TIBI totes are the perfect thing!

The sheer, sexy, cotton cover-ups, and swimwear in bright patterns, make me long for warmer weather, right now.

Lip glosses are a girl’s best friend, especially when the option to buy boxes of shoes like Carrie in Sex & the City, is no longer an option. The holiday "License to Shine" collection from Avon, gives you license to smile, whether you’re having a bad day and just need a little splurge as a pick-me-up, or you are just looking for a glamorous gloss to take your usual makeup look from day to evening.

These shimmery lipstick/glosses add a hit of color and dazzling shine to your lips. They arrive in a very festive, slim, shiny, silvery tube that looks cheerful and elegant. Even better, the silky gloss they contain catches the light and glimmers like you are the life of the party, even if you feel down in the dumps. The color feels light and moisturizing on your lips, and lasts a long, long time, thanks to a color-gel formula.

Lucky Shops Makes Designer Treasures A Reality for Fashonistas

When Lucky Magazine premiered, it was a unique treat showcasing "finds" fashionistas might otherwise have overlooked from traditional outlets, boutiques, retail, and online shops. Shoppers, rejoiced! Now, the well established Lucky Magazine is a 'must-have" for fun reading every month, and to find treasures throughout the United States!
Each year, Lucky Magazine also hosts LUCKY SHOPS, a discount shopping event Held at the Metropolitan Pavilion, a popular event space for sample sales and fashion week runway shows, eagerly anticipated and always sold-out event makes the pages of Lucky Magazine come to life.
The two-day extravaganza attracts women of all ages who (for a small fee) are able to purchase fashion items from some of the most high-end designers, with price-tags that bring these items into the realm of reality for non-celebrities and millionaires.
For the 2008 show, tickets were just $20.00 and included a free subscription to Lucky Magazine (a $12.00 value). A Thursday night VIP Shopping Party ticket was available for $250 with a bonus VIP gift bag (worth over $500). If anyone was feeling mildly guilty about spending money to spend money, it was good to know that a portion of all ticket sales and select merchandise sales go to a charity. This year, the beneficiary was the Robin Hood Foundation. Since 1988, Robin Hood has targeted poverty in New York Cit, offering programs to help those in need.

.

Like every intrepid bargain hunter, I can't wait to get in and see what's for sale! Long before the doors open for Lucky Shops, eager shoppers line up to be first in line to snag the hottest bargains hoping from dozens of designer labels at more than 50% off. However, unlike many sample-type sales, Lucky Shops seems to bring out the best, not the worst, in people. They venue is huge, and there is plenty of stock for everyone. The aisles are wide, and the atmosphere is charged with positive, high energy. It never feels "frantic" and I didn't see anyone grabbing or pushing.

Once inside, well marked aisles offer a "candy store" of designer treasures. This is not budget basement shopping, but for those with just a little cash who want something really stupendous they might not have been able to justify at full retail, it's a fabulous opportunity. The items are current or almost so (not more than a season past). It's easy to get carried away when you spy an $600 handbag for $300....just make sure you stay within your budget!

Within minutes of opening, shoppers at Lucky Shops are off and running, amassing quantities of blue and orange (and re-useable) Lucky Shops bags. One example a good deal is the black, jeweled, Charlotte Ronson sweater jacket in the photo above (it comes with a patent leather belt, too) worn by salesperson, Jessica. It was just $60.00 ( Charlotte Ronson sweaters routinely sell for over $200).

Another extremely popular feature is the Lycra denim bar with a large selection of designer jeans and an on-the-spot hemming service (jeans pickup in 30 minutes)!

I loved the multi-colored gold from Alex Woo, and I found funky earrings from boutique designer Bing Bang discounted from $85.00 to $25.00 (and lower), and the popular, online designer discounter, Bluefly's area featured high-end Prada, Gucci (and more) for less than their usual prices. The Robin Hood Foundation's area was selling new and "gently used" and new items. I saw Manolo Blahnik, Prada and even Ferragamo shoes for $50.00-$100 (let someone else have the painful work of breaking them in for you). For a fashionista, this type of "find" is akin to Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City visiting the famous, Vogue closet!

Lucky Shops past vendors, offering up to 70% off, include: 7 For All Mankind ,Alex Woo ,Alice + Olivia , ,Andrea Brueckner , Benefit Cosmetics , Bing Bang , Bluefly.com , Botkier ,Charlotte Ronson ,Conscious Jewelry by Danna Weiss ,Corey Lynn Calter ,Cynthia Rowley ,Devi Kroell ,Dooney & Bourke ,Dr Martens ,Earnest Sewn ,Ed Hardy ,Eskell ,Foley + Corinna ,Garnier ,Gerard Yosca Jewelry ,Geren Ford ,Golden State ,,Hanky Panky ,Havaianas ,J Brand ,Jill Stuart ,Jonathan Adler ,Kate Spade ,Keds ,Kerrigan/ Daryl K ,Kooba ,Lauren Wolf Jewelry ,Lee Angel ,Lizzie Scheck ,Lorelei ,Lyell ,Mara Hoffman ,Miguel Ases, Inc. ,Milly ,MINT ,Jodi Arnold ,Miss Sixty ,Nicholas K ,Nine West ,Onitsuka Tiger ,Paddywax ,Prada, Vavra ,Page Sargisson ,Plaza Too ,Rachel Comey ,Rachel Pally ,Rafe New York ,Rebecca Minkoff ,Rebecca Taylor ,See by Chloé ,Shelly Steffee ,Shoshanna ,Sonia by Sonia Rykiel ,TDM Design ,Tevrow + Chase ,The Pink Slip ,Theory Women ,Theory Men ,Theory Accessories ,Thread Social ,Tous ,Tracy Reese ,Twinkle by Wenlan ,Vena Cava ,Vera Wang Lavender ,Zero + Maria Cornejo .....just to name a few.....

..but .not everything is for sale. Some offerings are free, such as free skin consultations and complimentary products from Garnier....

....and raffles and contests such as this one at the Ed Hardy fragrance table where you could spin to win an Ed Hardy tote bag (really cute) with purchase....

...and to keep you from fading before you've shopped till you've dropped, complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and light snacks are also available.

When you're ready to purchase an item, the well-run cashiers station make the task, easy. In the two years I've covered Lucky Shops I've never seem mass mayhem and long lines at the very busy checkout stations. Find the items you want, and you get a chit/check for them, while they are stored in a re-useable, fabric, Lucky Shops tote bag . Take the chits for your purchases (within one hour, or they go back into circulation) to any of the cashiers, pay, and take the receipt back to the booth(s) to pick up your items, already packed and ready to go!

If you missed this year's Lucky Shops, you won't want to miss the next one! Visit http://www.luckyshops.com/ for more information.

Bath and Bodyworks Brings Holiday Cheer to Even the Most Budget Minded

A new lipstick always brightens my day, but when it's holiday time, even a modestly-priced lipstick has to be special, or why buy it? The Liplicious Double Kiss Collection from Bath and Bodyworks features a bunch of holiday-worthy items that cost so little you can afford to give them to everyone and still have enough left to buy one or two for yourself.

For example: the Bath and Bodyworks Dual-Wanded Lip Shimmer $10.00 is an easy way to dress up your favorite lip color for the holidays. One side of the wanded gloss has a super-shimmery platinum infused in clear, silky, shiny gloss, the other, a fabulous, gliztening gold. Wear them alone for shine and shimmer or coat your existing lipstick with either or both for a day-to-evening, quick change. We also liked the Dual Wand Lip Gloss $8.00 and Dual-Wand Lip Plumper $8.00 offering two tasty lip options for less than the cost of a sandwich! The former features a gloriously fruity tasted Peach Nectar & Mango (coral combo) with a shimmer and non-shimmer gloss; a Fruity Gelato & Plum Sugar (pink/lavender combo); and a Cordial & Butterscotch Latte (berry/brown combo). Wear them together or separately and make each, your own unique signature color. And, the Brown Sugar/Dulce de Leche Lip Plumper offered us a shimmery browned berry with an overlay of beige-y pink gloss that smelled like a true dulce de leche and made our lips soft and sexy...and full. There’s also a Peppermint & Spun Sugar (pink combo); Raspberry Sorbet & Strawberry Smoothie (berry combo). We didn’t try them, but we’re willing to bet they taste and look amazing...just for a few dollars!

Before I move off the subject of fun and festive lip products, one that you will want to have, especially if you like wearing dark lipsticks and/or your lips then to be chapped and flake-y so your lip colors don't apply smoothly, is the
2-in-1 Moisturizing Color and Sugar Scrub $12.00. This double-ended product has an exfoliating lip scrub on one and a moisturizing lip color on the other end. The scrub contains sweet brown sugar (tastes sweet and delicious) to gently buff dead, dry skin and smooth your lips and it really works without irritating them. The creamy,mini-sized, moisturizing lip color on the other end means one less lipstick tube to carry around with you. Get the clever, take-it-with-you lip treatment in three combos: Pomegrante & Brown Sugar (pink combo - the one in the photo above), Coconut Truffle & Brown Sugar (neutral combo); and Candied Apple & Brown Sugar (berry combo). The Pomegranate (pink combo) offered us a nice, moist, layerable color over the smoothest lips we’ve ever! What’s great about this (other than that it’s so effective and user-friendly) is that it actually is smaller than a regular lip gloss and yet gives you everything you need for great lips all in one. And, at the price, it's definitely a won't-want-to-d0-without for the holidays and beyond.

All of these lip products make great stocking stuffers -- run to Bath and Bodyworks (or visit online at http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/ ) and get them before they’re all gone!

The Bath and Bodyworks Black Chamomile Sleep Collection from Aromatherapy also makes for inexpensive but impressive gift-giving. The limited-edition products detoxifiy while you sleep. The Pillow Mist $10.00 6.5 fl. oz. is my favorite for keeping and giving. It is an easy way to start your nightly journey to dreamland. The light formula is infused with Chamomile essential oil for an enhanced, restorative sleep. Spray it lightly over your pillow and/or sheets before you go to bed and enjoy the light, pleasant, softly floral, lightly herbal. The scent is so relaxing you are more able to stop worrying about the day, and put your mind at ease. The collection also has a Body Lotion, Mineral Bath Soak, Luxury Bath and Body Wash and a Fragrance Oil. None of the products costs more than $16.50 so you indulge in the entire collection and not lose any sleep over it (pun intended). For those who just can’t get enough vanilla (it is one of those scents considered to be an aphrodisiac), I suggest the Shea Cashmere Collection from the. True Blue® Spa. The products feature luxurious ingredients such as Mongolian cashmere extract (to soften and smooth–like a Pashmina against your skin) and African shea butter (the most effective moisturizer I know of) to soften and smooth skin and leave a good-enough-to-eat, creamy, absolutely delicious, vanilla scent. I sampled the tried the Shower Cream $15.00 8 fl. oz. that felt as luxe and soft as a cashmere sweater and left a light, lingering scent of vanilla. Maybe it was just our my imagination, but perhaps I did sense people trying to get a little closer to me the day I tested this body wash. In any case, the collection includes six core products (none more than $18.00) and gift sets running $25.00-$98.00 that includes a gorgeous robe (see photo). Who says you can't can’t enjoy and give the luxury of cashmere, this year?

The Chocolate Show, Designers, Diet-Busters, and More!

On Friday evening, November 7th, celebrity fashion designers, including several former Project Runway Fashion Designers, joined with Celebrity Pastry Chefs from top restaurants, to create a "Chocolate Super-Hero" runway show at the 2008 Chocolate Fashion Show. The charity event at Pier 94 in Manhattan also offered a preview of the Chocolate show, and Tastings (another gourmet food show) To Help Raise Funds For The Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure. The Advice Sisters blogged about Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout October--it's a very worthy cause!

One of the talented, celebrity designers chosen to create special looks for the runway show included my friend, Esther Nash. Check out her Web Site http://www.esthernash.com/ which has her bio, photos, and an easy-to access outline of the fields in which she has gained well-deserved recognition. Esther (in the black dress--another of her own, fabulous creations) is posing with her model, "Sedusa" (takeoff of the classic mythological figure, "Medusa". Her blonde model was gilded with gold glitter, and wore a form fitting, pink, leopard-print dress with chain straps, but the headdress and the "snakes" on the bodice are all gold-gilded genuine chocolate!

Sedusa's outfit included tall, gold, gladiator sandals festooned with long gold snakes that were also *you guessed it) pure chocolate. If you are wondering how all that chocolate was kept from melting, view the video below in which I got Esther to share the designer's "secret" about how they kept all that chocolate from melting right off the model's bodies.

You might not be able to tell from the photo, but Esther's glamorous and glittery makeup (and Sedusa's) was created by International Makeup Artist Jerry Lopez. Lopez has worked extensively with fashion photographers, celebrities and models. His clients have included Donna Karan, Catherine Malandrino and Rosie Perez.

I attended this show with TV personality and interviewer, Cognac Wellerlane, who graciously allowed me to participate in her video interview with Esther Nash *video, below. Cognac's the pro at interviewing, but I had fun posing some questions to Esther. In this photo she is doing a backstage interview with "Barbarella" (the dress was covered with chocolate "pailettes.") For more celebrity interviews visit Cognac's web site Cognacscorner.tv

Video: Cognac Wellerlane, Alison Blackman, and Fashion Designer Esther Nash Backstage at the Chocolate Show with Video by Mauro Botero

Judge Shelly Nash, was also at the show to support her sister, as was their mother, Dorothy Nash. Dorothy was busy checking out the myriad of chocolate. I couldn't find her when I was taking backstage photos, but there was a lot of chocolate to sample.

This is just one of the many tempting displays of chocolate that guests could sample. Tastings, a gourmet showcase, was also part of the opening night and would be offering the public special events, cocktails, gourmet treats, and holiday cuisine to sample. The public show would begin the next day, with tickets at $28.00 for adults.
While many simply walked around, sampling the chocolate, CBS News Anchor Chris Wragge got the fashion show festivities underway. He introduced the models, and acknowledged a number of key players for the chocolate show, including founders and producers (and CEOs of Event International) Sylvie Douce & François Jeantet. According to the press literature, about a decade ago, Sulvie and François decided it would be a great idea to create a show just about chocolate for the public. conceived They first created le Salon du Chocolat in Paris, which captured the hearts (not to mention the stomachs) of more than 40,000 visitors. In 1998, the first Chocolate Show was held on Thanksgiving weekend at the Puck Building in New York (the demand keeps expanding and so do the venues). This year the show moved to the Passenger Ship Piers on the West Side to accommodate larger crowds and more displays.

For this fashion show, each model's outfit was designed to mirror a popular superhero..but at least 40% of the costume had to be genuine chocolate. There were several celebrity former "Project Runway" contestants who designed costumes for the show, but Esther's creation, "Sedusa" walked down the runway to the most admiring glances. After all the models had a chance to talk their turn on the runway, the pastry chef and designer got a chance to talk their bows with their models. Esther Nash is walking with Lauri Ditunno, Owner of Cake Alchemy. You can see that the white runway is littered with bits of chocolate that has fallen off the various model's clothing!

A triumphant Esther Nash waves to the crowd

I watched backstage as David Barton was sprayed with liquid chocolate to give him that golden "tan." His dumbells say "David Barton Gym" and some of them actually fell off him during his walk won the runway. Still, with all that chocolate coating on him, he smelled delicious!

This model's hat and bustier are all molded chocolate. She walked very carefully. Xena "Warrior Princess" ore a dress and crown all of chocolate

...wonder woman's airplane hat and all of the decorations on her clothing were white chocolate

Feeling hungry? There's always next years show! For more information on the chocolate show www.chocolateshow.com

A Post About Cool Clothing

This is a post about cool things.
The man in the photo may or may not be cool, but his shirt is made of Coolmax®. Thiat's the original performance fabric that wicks away moisture and keeps you cool and dry so you're comfortable in any kind of weather when you are working hard.

Also cool is CoolclothingUSA.com, founded by"Craig," a man who is an Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran (and his wife, "Joanna"). They started the company because Craig appreciated the benefits of coolmax shirts when he was in Iraq, and Joanna appreciated it's benefits as a marathon runner.
Both new how expensive it was to find coolmax products, so they set out to find a way to produce them inexpensively.
They succeeded! Coolmax T-shirts from CoolclothingUSA.com comes in sizes S-XL and are available in basic white, yellow, black, gray, military brown, navy, desert tan, sage green, olive drabpowder blue, and light pink. The 100% Coolmax®short sleeve t-shirts are just $13.95 each --a great price for these usually expensive garments. The company also sells socks, boxers, capri pants, and lots of other items to keep men and women cool, dry and comfortable.
I considered Coolmax shirts that I saw in a travel catalogue a few years ago. I thought they were a great idea, but the price tag made it a major purchase. The CoolclothingUSA.com T-shirt I tried recently was nicely made (in the USA), and yet the price is about the same as an inexpensive shirt in the local chain store...so it's a no-brainer to get a bunch for travel, for the gym, etc. The sizing is standard for men's shirts (there is also a women's collection for a few dollars more).
In case you are wondering, Coolmax® fabric is smooth, but not as silky as cotton because it is made from polyester fibers. The moisture-wicking performance is in the high-tech fiber itself (not a coating), so it never loses it's effectiveness. Now, how cool is that?

Light Up The Holidays-Bliss Living Home Candles

I can't believe it's almost holiday time--but we're almost there. One of the things I'm giving this year is a lot of candles. They are great for people who like scent, but not on themselves, and even though guys don't eagerly admit it, they love the smell of scent in the room (candles are a 'must-have" to set the mood for romance, and guys know it).

Until I discovered Blissliving Home at the New York International Gift Fair, I didn’t realize that Mei Xu, the owner and creator of that company, is also the owner and creator the Chesapeake Bay Candle Company (one of my favorite candle companies). Blissliving Home is available online, and through a catalogue. They have lots of chic but affordable home decor items including pillow and linens but the candle selection is really super! We got a chance to experience a number of candles featured at Blissliving Home, for the holidays. The affordability of these luxe items, plus beautiful packaging and lovely scents mean a great product you can enjoy without going broke.

For example, two of my favorites for gift-giving and to create a stunning, holiday centerpieces come in re-useable boxes. When you’ve removed the candles, use the box for recipes, or photographs, or other treasures. Carved Spheres $30.00/2. are heavily carved candles reminiscent of Russian wood carvings and Moscow Cathedrals. They are so opulently decorated with bead and thread, leaf, and circle designs, that they remind me of Faberge. I loved the rich, warm, honey-colored wax candles in "Honey," redolent with oranges and cloves. (There’s also a berry-colored and scented pair). These look like they should cost a Kings ransom (but they don't), thereby making them a real "find."

Another really impressive gift set is the Erode Votive Set $30. Also inspired by Russian royalty and modern day Moscow, this gift box has six, sensationally-scented, soy wax candles, nestled into small, metallic-finish, glass votives. The white wax candles are infused with strong scent of the spicy/sweet scents of the chai you love in your favorite coffee shop: Warm tea notes with creamy vanilla, spicy cinnamon and ginger, black pepper, cardamom and clove comprise Vanilla Chai (in a gold votive). A blend of orange and bergamot mixed with sandalwood, vetiver and clove, create the scent of "Orange & Clove" (in a copper votive). The light scent of lavender, eucalyptus, Indonesian clove, apple, cinnamon, Cedarwood and vanilla make up the lovely Kinoki Bonsai (in a bronze votive).

There are times when you’d rather have an unscented candle The Silver Spin Pillars $25.00/3 are glamorous, 2.25" X 3.75" unscented pillars with 100% lead-free wicks. The trio is nicely boxed in a clear, cellophane box (save a tree--add an ornament or a bow, and you don’t need to gift wrap). They will catch the light with their metallic surface even more brilliantly, since they feature a circular, "spun" texture. We also liked the softly conical shape that makes them more elegant than a regular, chunky pillar, but still gives them stability. Mix these into some pine boughs or holly sprigs and you have an instantly glamorous candle display for mantel or table.

If you love glitter and a great gift at a great price (and who doesn’t?) Stock up on The Blissliving Home Black/White Glitter Tealight Candles $10/8. The tiny tealights come beautifully boxed in a long, slim, rectangular, hard-sided cardboard box with modern circle design in either black or white, held tight with two black, gross, grain ribbons (use the boxes for chopsticks, pencils, or other long, small, items). The tealights inside are standard size, in white wax or black wax, but they have a generous coating of glitter to glam them up for the holidays. The black candles have silver glitter that make them look like a dark, starry night. The white tealights have iridescent glitter that remind me of freshly falling snow under streetlights. Tealights are so versatile you can use them in displays, in glass holders, or line them up and watch them add allure to your room.

The quality is there in every candle, but they're so affordable you can sprinkle them around for a party or dinner and feel elegant without spending a bundle (and they make great stocking stuffers, too).

Holiday Gift Fair created by Jono Productions With Stacey London Offers Stylish Gift Suggestions

The holidays are almost here, and that means.....gifts!

Whether you're the one looking for unique items to give, or you're just hoping to get something cool, the place to be to check out some imaginative products for every budget was yesterday's Holiday Gift Fair created by Jono Productions, and held at Gary's Loft in Manhattan. Companies represented in the large, penthouse space were: Back To Basic Toys,Braun,Buxom,Inc.,Callaway Golf ,CharleeKatz ,CleanUp ,Coldwater Creek ,Compagnie de Provence ,Coty,Crazy Libellule ,Dana-Maxx ,A Diamond is Forever ,Dyson ,EOS ,FAO Schwarz ,FlingWear ,Glam & Glam Noir ,Gunnar Optiks ,Hillhouse Naturals ,Just Be ,Kodak ,Linea-Pro ,Mata Hari ,Natures Candy ,Oval Vodka ,Pier 1 Imports ,Pop Judaica ,ProFlowers ,Psychedelic Fur, Rosetta ,Stone ,Shapeez ,Soak , SodaStream ,Sony Ericsson ,Spin Master ,Trance Essence, and Violight

I didnt' have the time to check out every single table, but I DID get a chance to check out the latest and greatest styling tools from Linea Pro. Here, I'm getting a touch-up on my hair from Rodney, who I actually met in February of 2008 backstage at the Carmen Marc Valvo Runway Show during Fashion Week in Bryant Park. He was styling the model's hair with Odile Gilbert (see photos) using a fabulous flat iron by Linea Pro that was ready for it's own closeup, completely studded completely with glittering, Swarovski Crystals. That style of iron is the one Rodney is using in this photo. For those who have everything and want to feel totally glam every day, this glittering flat iron is now available to everyone, at Henri Bendel (http://www.henribendel.com/ ). A\ mini-sized version will soon be available as well. For those without pots of cash who want a pro-quality flat iron, Linea Pro makes more affordable models in both regular and mini-sizes. A luxe gift suggestion for a woman is the Linea Pro Mini Styling Iron $52.00 that heats up to 410 degrees fast, in about 10 seconds. It has titanium tourmaline ceramic plates (smoothest around, and help your hair glide through even heat and retain moisture), and it comes in limited edition styles such as bright red with leopard spots and sleek white and also in pink and black. The mini flat iron is just 6 inches long and 3/4 inches wide and weighs only 2.12 ounces but it comes with all the quality of the regular sized iron including dual voltage for traveling overseas, and a heat resistant pouch for travel or for stowing a hot iron fast in your office or gym bag. When I got home from this event, my personal trainer said: "what did you do to your hair? It looks so shiny?" At dinner, even though it was raining, another friend made a comment about how amazing my hair looked. I hadn't done anything at all, so my sleek style that brought accolades was all due to Rodney's skill, and the way the Linea Pro flat iron worked it's magic to eliminate static and frizz and make my hair shiny and healthy-looking. TIP: The full sized Linea Pro Flat Iron with Nano Silver and Platinum Technology $199.99 also comes in red leopard, matte black, and shiny white, but how about gold or silver or skulls? That certainly would make someone smile as a great gift idea! The larger sized iron also has something I truly love: there is a remote control with digital read-out on the cord instead of on the inside of the iron, making the iron much lighter and safer to handle. The Linea Pros were also the first to feature a 30-minute Auto-Sleep mode. Left unattended, the iron shuts off within 30 minutes. This "heat insurance" brings peace of mind that is worth every penny!

Moving on to other tables, I spied my contacts from Coty showcasing some of the newest fragrances including Euphoria for women and for men, Chloe (someone on your list will want that gorgeous candle), the Hara-Juku set, and Mark Jacobs new Daisy necklace (so cute, so fabulous, and actually, really affordable) which we have included in the Advice Sisters What Works Holiday Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column Keep your eyes peeled for my amazing COTY fragrances in future columns and on this blog.

Moving along, I visited JUST BE, a clever line of T-shirts and Totes that don't try too hard to "make a statement," but encourage people to use the products and "just be." Each shirt ranges in price from $18-$24 (babies are $15) and each has an artistic graphic (inspired by vintage posters from 1920-1980) and a "BE" suggestion (eg. Be Green, Be Kissable, Be a Princess, Be Cool, Be Funky). The JUST BE website even has an online community http://www.jb-justbe.com/ where anyone can upload videos and photos of themselves, "just being." The T-shrits come in sizes that work for men and women, and for kids (there is even a Collection of baby rompers). The Graphic Designer and Entrepreneur, Michelle Pratt-Lienhart, is posing here with her wares.

I also stopped to talk to the folks at Clean Up Soap that is shaped like Land Mines (and gives back to eliminating them), Rosetta Stone (I always wondered how it worked--and now I know it's really effective); Braun (they have a new and truly upscale electric shaver for men); Gunnar Optiks (their signature product is a yellow-tinted eyeglass that soothes tired, dry eyes when you sit in front of your computer); Pro Flowers (holiday themed "green" gifts such as flowers, and a trio of mini spruce trees you can plant when the Spring arrives), The Kodak Gallery (upload your photos and make truly personal gifts, from holiday cards to a hard-bound book of favorite recipes with photos for family, or a baby book for a new mom); Trance Essence ( affordable and very unique fragrances made with great essential oils); Absinthe Mata Hari (they have mixable Absinthe that's of course now legal once again); Nature's Cany Designs (two charming women offering affordable silver and gold-plated earth, air, fire and water "signs" on pendants and bracelets that can be further accessories with crystals and charms. These beautifully designed symbols are meaningful and personal and are appropriate for men as well as women.

One of my favorite shows on The Learning Channel is What Not To wear, hosted by the glamorous, Stacey London. She was on hand to offer holiday and style suggestions, but I didn't get a chance to talk to her because she was busy checking out the various booths (I got there early and didn't want to bother her). I really wanted to talk to her! I can just imagine myself standing in front of the 360 mirror on "What Not To Wear" -- frightening, but I'd love to know what she'd suggest for my personal style. In this photo, however, she is checking out another type of style--diamond style -- at the Diamonds Are Forever table. The white tree is festooned with diamond jewelry. Who wouldn't want that tree in her possession?

All in all, over 30 brands were represented. Check out this blog regularly (or better still,
SUBSCRIBE TO THE ADVICESISTERS BLOG FEED IN YOUR FAVORITE READER) for all sorts of holiday gift suggestions, including more highlights reviewed in greater detail from this gift fair.

Clinique Team Up With Trina Turk for a Gift With Purchase That's A Can't Miss

The Advice Sisters almost never promote a promotion that's not giving back to a charity, but one came across our desk so good, we can't help but mention it on the Advice Sisters blog: The Trina Turk for Clinique Gift With Purchase *free with any Clinique purchase of $25.00 or more at Nordstrom and Nordstrom.com November 5-22, 2008

This $60.00 value starts with a large, zippered makeup bag, especially designed by the fabulous, Trina Turk for Clinique. Trina's bags are gorgeous, and this one is absolutely stunning! It has an all-over, silver and white "Tigress" print, and it is big enough to use as a clutch, or hold a week's worth of beauty must-haves.

Inside, there's not one, not two, not three, but six great Clinque products, and one silvery, mirrored lipstick case with magnetic closure (it holds a Clinique ong Last Lipstick (shine and moisture) in the universally flattering pink/coral shade of "Beach Coral"). Add even more shimmer and shine with a mini-sized Clinique Long Last Glosswear (with SPF 125) a shimmery soft pink called "Bamboo Pink." For the face, there's a color compact with Colour Surge Eye Shadow duo in Beach Plum (golden beige and bright plum) and aSoft-Pressed Powder Blusher in "New Clover," a fresh pink. There's also a Lash Doubling Mascara in Black.

...and there are samples of Clinique's excellent skin care in travel sizes, too:
Zero Gravity Repairwear Lift Firming Cream, and a Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser (with skin-soothing botanicals.

This holiday-worthy bag and products is really a treasure chest in a treasure! It makes a great great and a great splurge....but it will be available online and at Clinique counters at Nordstrom and at nordstrom.com while supplies last. If you're planning on purchasing any Clinique fragrances for gifts, getting this bonus is a no-brainer...so treat yourself and your friends! We were really impressed....we think you will be, too.

Chanel Holiday Collection- Bring on the Glam!

When I think of holiday glamour, the easiest way I can think of to take my look from day to night (or party) is with beautiful makeup. And when I think of beautiful makeup, Chanel comes to mind. Although The Advice Sisters reviewed some Chanel holiday makeup items in our huge, three-page What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion Holiday 2008 review column, our deadline blocked us from reviewing as many pieces of the Chanel Holiday Collection as we would have wished -- so here are a few items that didn't make it into the What Works column, but that I think are "must-haves" for your holiday makeup this season:

Adding gold to your holiday outfit is a great way to dress up even last years's dress, and the same is true for your holiday makeup. Chanel's Poudre Precieuse (Gold Highlighting Powder)$75.00 is a liimited edition, loose, sparkling powder that will glitz up your skin and make you look glamorous, even if you’re wearing last season’s dress. A low, elegant, glass jar with shiny black top has a little well to hold a soft, flat, powder brush. Below, the sparkling gold powder adds a nearly sheer but starry gold glimmer to face, decollete, and even your feet and hair. The glittery gold stays put for quite some time, and a little goes a long way–dust this on for the office party, or after-work events and you’ll look instantly party-ready. $75.00 is a small price to pay for a product that helps you look and feel glamorous and it multi-tasks on face, hair and body. I’d lcall that a great deal! TIP: To glam up any lip look instantly, just dab a bit of this golden powder in the middle of your bottom lip, or dust is lightly all over bare lips and follow with a silky, clear gloss. You can carefully add a drop of powder on your eyelids to give a matte shadow more "ooph," too. This is a must-have (and it makes a luxurious holiday gift idea, too).

An easy-to-apply, multi-tasking, fluid liquid eyeshadow such as Chanel's Ombre D'eau Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow $32.00 is a unique product that gives you very long-lasting, iridescent eye color that can be subtle to intense, depending upon how you apply it (*there's a brief video on the Chanel web site to show you how). Shake the liquid powder to combine the ingredients, then dot it in the middle of your eyelid and blend it with your fingertips or a brush. For deeper color, add more. You can also use the same product for a coodinated eye liner, simply by brushing it near your lash line without blending it. Two colors from the holiday collection include two gold glitzened colors: "Source" is a golden pink; "Riviera, "a pale gold that leaves lids glamorously gilded! If you want a more traditional Eye Liner, The Duo Eyeliner Professional $45.00 in "Brun-Lamé" or "Noir-Lamé" gives you the convenience of a pressed powder compact and the the look of a traditional, liquid eyeliner (applied with water), or the smudged look of a kohl pencil (applied dry). Each compact has a matte color and a sparkle color. Pressed powder liners are perfect for your purse and for travel --no chance of spill or mess.

Lips are always a focal point, and if you're going to be at holiday gatherings with family and friends (not to mention parties where the Mistletoe, hangs) you'll want great lipsticks to coordiante with your party clothes. This season, Chanel's holiday collection features the look of shimmering, just-kissed lips. Red lips are fun and great for evening glamour, but you need a great lip liner to help define your mouth and keep the lipstick in check. I love the Le Crayon Levres $28.00, a precision lip definer that is available in 11 colors including in "Rouge," a true red. The pencil gives you long-lasting color that goes on without a struggle, thanks to silicones. Good-for-your-lips Vitamin E helps combat free radicals. You won't need to take a separate lip brush either, since this one has a built-in brush for blending and it also comes with it's onw, double-bladed sharpener.

The Chanel Holiday Lipsticks arrive like a wish granted, in a variety of products and colors and textures. My favorite, however, is Rouge Allure $30.00 (photo) not just because it is an exceptional lipstick (which it is) but because of it's presentation. It comes in a distinctive, shiny black case that has a gold push-button to release the lipstick tube, keeping the compact sleek and eliminating any chance it will open in your handbag. The satiny, luminous lip color is amazingly long lasting, yet silky as cashmere. We tried "Exaltation," a shimmery, coral red; and Nude, a soft, glowing buff. There's also "Audace, " a true red and "Ardent, a rosewood. There are several dozen colors in the permanent collection as well. Even just one will make you feel fabulous and is worth the little splurge. A Rouge Allure lipstick by Chanel is the one lip product I keep in my handbag at all times.

For SPF protection and a sheer, shiny lipstick/gloss in a tube, I also love Aqualumia Sheer Colour Lipshine SPF 15 $27.00 These gives you a pop of sheer color and make your lips, no matter how dry, feel pampered and hydrated. For the holidays, there's one limited edition, addition to the collection: "Cancun," a soft beige that makes it easy to perk up your dry, pale lips without any effort at all. Like Rouge Allure Lipstick, the color lasts and lasts without every feeling dry or sticky..and it has SPF 15 to protect your lips from daily exposure from the sun's damaging rays --what's not to love?

...but speaking of love: if you love patent-leather shine and the convenience of a click-it brush pen for precise applications. a brush-on gloss that feels more like a comfy lipstick is Chanel's Brush-On Creme Lip Colour $32.00. For the holidays, I tried the limited-edition "Canele" ©, a warm bronze that gives lips the type of metallic shimmer you want come party time (or any time). There's nothing easier than a pen-type format to get the gloss exactly where you want it. For even more glitz and glimmer, there's Glossimer $26.00 in limited edition "Gold Shine" and "Red Shine." The Gold Shine gloss is silky, shiny and clear, but it is infused with enough gold shimmer to stand on it's own on bare lips and gild them with light-reflecting, golden glimmer (you can add it as an overlay to another lip product too, of course). The Red Shine gloss is a seriously shimmery, gloriously cheery red sheer that adds light-reflecting, very sexy glam to your lips. It is glamorous and tinted enough to wear instead of a red lipstick and still be bold, but less harsh. For anyone who wants to try red lips this season but is a bit worried about how to wear it, this color is a perfect, universally flattering choice.

Dark nails are definitely still in style for the holidays. Chanel’s Le Vernis Nail Color in designed with a patented, no-spill bottle and wiping action" to make your DIY easier (especially with dark colors) and more efficient. The high-tech formula doesn't just color, it also nutures nails with moisturizers and strengtheners (another reason to keep your manicure fresh). For the holidays, I like "Lotus Rose" (photo) a vibrant, super-velvety cool rose that looks softer than bright red, but just as rich and dramatic and "Organdy" a clear, bright pink that coats nails with glossy color that looks smooth and sophisticated. It's the perfect color to peek out from silvery sandals, and it looks particularly great with white or winter white. Speaking of white..... it makes a great choice for a bride who wants to wear color, but still look classy. Whether it's your wedding day or not, when you’re going for a more subdued, ladylike look, nudes are a great choice–but not just any boring beige. Chanel's "Perle Roseee" from their Holiday Collection is a beige-y pink that has a hint of gold and lots of shsimmer to look warm and multi-dimensional.

Spa Magazine's Annual Fall Media Event!

On Friday October 24th I attended one of my favorite events of the year, the Annual Fall Media Event, presented by Spa Magazine! This was the 11th season of an event that brings editors and freelancers an exciting view of spa-oriented products and properties. Friday's event was held at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Manhattan (80 Columbus Circle at 60th Street). The hotel's attention to detail and service is impeccable, even if you're just a "guest" for a few hours to attend an event.

The Spa Magazine showcase always gives me ideas for stories and review products that I know I'll want to be sharing with you throughout the year.

For example, this time I got a chance to experience the same star treatment as celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Rachel Hunter, and Elle Macpherson with a Pevonia caviar hand massage and treatment. This featured Pevonia Botanica's skin care, including some products from their very luxurious, effective and pampering Ligne Myoxy-Caviar (with unadulterated Caviar Extract, Pearl Extract and Escutox™ ) which immediately made my skin smoother, softer and brighter (the other option was a hand treatment with the also fantastic Tropicale line which The Advice Sisters reviewed in the January/February 2008 What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column. I also learned that Pevonia is about to launch the first comprehensive skincare system specifically formulated for teens. The products were on view as lab samples with bright green tops.

I also checked out what's new and nifty from spa-oriented cosmetics lines such as G.M. Collin and La Bella Donna. G.M. Collin has a myrid of high quality skin care lines including products for anti-aging, various skin types, men, sun, and bodycare.

I also love that G.M. Collin's new acne lines: Oxygen Puractive+ and Puracne Oxygen, have product that are color-free, paraben-free, alcohol-free and fragrance-free, with packaging that's made from paper that is recycled and recyclable. La Bella Donna was one of the first mineral makeup lines The Advice Sisters ever reviewed. We raved about their eye shadow in 2003 and their foundation back in 2003. We are looking forward to reviewing more of their high-end and very beautiful products in 2009!
Makeup and skincare are not the only things highlighted at the Spa Magazine Fall Annual Media Event. I spent a few moments checking out the lingerie and shape-wear from Soma Intimates (found in Chicos stores) -- their products are super-comfortable. I wear some of their tug-less underwear and can vouch for the fact that it looks and feels great. Apparently, the line is introducing some sexier lingerie into their line..can't wait for that!

And, the host of this event, Spa Magazine, made sure everyone went home with the two latest copies of their SPA Magazine. I don't usually keep magazines more than a month, but I make an exception for SPA because it's such a fun read. If you love to visit spas, or want to but are just an armchair traveler, you will devour the pages! The photos, recipes, products and reviews give you lots of ideas and ways to relax (whether you're at a spa, or not). If you want to select a spa to actually visit in person, Spa Magazine's reviews of spa properties around the world give you a taste of what to expect and what's available. Visit http://www.spamagazine.com/ for more information.
...and of course, there are dozens of spas represented at this event including celebrated destination spas such as Canyon Ranch, Safety Harbor, Lake Austin, and Mirival. Also represented were day spas such as the Spas at the Mandarian Oriental properties. One brand-new spa that hasn't even opened yet (the opening is November 26th) is the Resort at Pelican Hill, located on the Southern California coast. The Spa at Pelican Hill will be featuring traditional, authentic, rejuvenating and restorative treatments from around the world!

I brought my camera to this event but was so focused on meeting and chatting I forgot to use it! Now that's, being relaxed!

L'Oreal Paris. Double Extend Lash Extension Effect Mascara - go for the faux!

Recently, the Advice Sisters received a package with a mascara from L'Oreal Paris. Double Extend Lash Extension Effect Mascara (approx $10.00 srp) is a dual-ended mascara that has a Nourishing Base Coat, and a Mascara on the other end. The base coat has Ceramide R and D-Pathenol to protect, nourish and strengthen the lashes you have, and of course, it acts as an anchor for the color mascara on top. Swipe the mascara on your lashes and besides leaving the color, tiny tubes help extend the length so they look 60%+ longer.

The product is Ophthalmologist and allergy tested so even contact lens wearers can try this one (although the little tube pieces might come off and fall into your eye if you're rubbing them and you're not being careful). The package said that the fragrance-free product would come off easily with soap and water, but to get your eyes really clean, I suggest an eye makeup remover.

Several coats of this mascara and base coat really did make my lashes look not just longer, but more full. I don't normally "go for the faux," but if you added several coats for holiday parties, this mascara could be a lot easier than grappling with false eyelashes--and almost as effective.

You can get this in any drugstore or mass market retailer online or off...
