GREAT FALL EYE LOOKS:
A nude eye is the new alternative to the deep, smoky eye. What’s so great about this trend is that it’s neutral and everyone can wear it. Furthermore, since nudes shades work with virtually every skin tone, it’s easier to apply and look pretty without much practice (there’s no one you can do a smoky eye well without putting in some practice time). Origins Powder Eyeshadow $14.00 comes in 28 shades including a new and nifty neutral called "Harvest Taupe." The light beige color is just deep enough for a daytime lid color, but light enough to use as a highlight with a deeper color, too. We like this one particularly well with some of the new colored liners and mascaras since it’s a neutral base that harmonizes with whatever else you put next to it. Everyone should have at least one neutral shade like this! Another new color is "Bark," a hard to define, deep, intense, grayed brown, that makes a modern smoky eye and a totally devastatingly lovely powder eye liner (looks great with Harvest Taupe, too). The silky shadow comes in a cute, square, mirrored compact slim enough to fit into a makeup bag. The shadow contains good-for-your skin Vitamin E. It glides on gently and smoothly. Rich starch helps the color stay put.
Last Fall, the Advice Sisters reviewed a
most adorable, but indispensible item for eyes: the black,
Mini Volume Glamour Ultra Mascara $8.00 by
Bourjois. Now the nifty little gem comes in colors: The 3"
long mascaras come with a thin lanyard to loop onto a cell phone,
camera, or key ring, and a lobster-claw clasp that unhooks for ease of
use. Since I reviewed this product a year ago, I've popped mine into my
makeup bag and carry it around everywhere. You have no idea
how often it's come in handy!! The mascara is really great, too.
It contains a volumizing complex of natural waxes and silicone gum with
carnuba and rice waxes to help thicken ashes. It's also enriched with
polymers, paraffin, beeswax, pigments, and Vitamin B5. The nicely-shaped
bristles coat one lash at a time from root to tip. When I applied just
one coat of the black, I noticed the volumizing properties
immediately. Two coats, and my lashes looked incredibly dark and sexy.
The new colors are soft so you needn't worry your lashes will be weirdly
purple--they'll just have a hint of tint. If your lashes are very light,
you will need a few coats to deepen the color (or wear a coat over a
light brown or grey mascara for more allure). You'll like this mascara
so much you will want the full-sized version!
So you didn't get to France this Summer, and
maybe that
Dior gown is out of your budget range this season, but you can
own genuine Dior (makeup) without going broke. The Fall 2008 ready to
wear collection by designer
John Galliano called "The Dior Impression Cuir Collection"
features rich, romantic shades of burgundy, plum and copper. In eye
makeup, this is beautifully translated in
Dior's 2 Colour Eyeshadow $35.00. Limited edition compacts feature a
large rectangle of ultra matte shadow as a base shade, and a
super-shimmery, smaller square of coordinated highlighting color. I love
the way this pressed powder shadow slides on lids, thanks to some
high-tech silicone talc. Also high tech is the "wet reflect" technology
that allows the shimmery powders to smooth out and look nearly
iridescent. There are eight duos. We like "Silver Look #775" that
pairs a mauved-brown with a square of shimmery silver. "Bronzy
Look #695" features a soft, matte, milk-chocolate brown rectangle with a
square of metallic-y copper that looks great mixed, matched, or solo.
The classic, shiny blue mirrored compacts with Silver DIOR name
and the included, dual-tipped mini applicator, plus velvety travel
pouch, makes these even more luxe. I also love the
Dior Crayon Eyeliner $25.00 in a trendy, shimmery deep green/almost
bronze called "Khaki #363." It blends beautifully and lasts a
really, really, really long time. Use the smudger tip to make this
into an eye-color, too, and always be in style!
There has been a lot of buzz about rotating
and vibrating mascaras. The idea makes sense, as either movement
will help separate, lift and coat each lash in a way a simple up and
down movement of your hand cannot do, but I wondered whether or not I'd
like something that moves, next to my eyes.
The TurboLash $30.00 by Estee Lauder put my worries to rest
See the "Product of the Week"
review on the Advice Sisters Blog. Every season there are a few new themes, or new takes on old favorites. This Fall, shimmery shadows offer a welcome relief from deep, smoky eyes. Prestige Cosmetics has a lovely, easy to use and easy to tote, loose shimmery shadow. Let Loose Shimmering Shadow $4.95 comes in a wanded tube that lets you apply eye makeup in a flash, anywhere! Two new shades for Fall work with every skin tone and with every outfit: "Jump" (pale, ivory pearle) and "Celebrate," a gorgeous, deep champagne. Blend well for less shimmer during the daytime, pile it on for evening glamour. Add a coat or two of Lash Matrix Mascara $5.95 in "Black/Brown," and watch the flexible, polymer spirals wrap each lash for length, lift and volume. One coat and our lashes were instantly long, lush and volumized --all in one step! TIP: Glitter isn't going away anytime soon. For evening, add some flash and glam with a Prestige, fine line, Liquid Glitter Eyeliner $5.25. Tiny micro glitter particles add glimmer, but it's not at all gaudy. "Eclipse," a pewter-grey, makes it modern. Prestige is so affordable, you can have a complete look for less than a take-out dinner! Rimmel London's newest, Glam’Eyes Mascara $7.25 comes with a rubber-bristled brush in pale powder pink, and an elegant, cross-hatched diamond-shaped design on the cap Although the pretty pink bristles immediately are coated with mascara the minute you dip them into the tube, the four-sided VolumFlex brush applicator does a good job of coating lashes two ways. The short-bristles sides of the wand add volume and lift, the two long-sided bristles comb through lashes so each is coated and separated without clumping (and this helps make lashes look longer, too). The mascara is available in extreme black, black and black brown. It lasts without clumping and smudging--excellent for a budget mascara. If you're looking to replace your current mascara this season and don't have a lot to spend, you can't go wrong with this one! Matte is hot this season. Clinique has created a "Modern Matte" collection to celebrate the cool, chic look of matte products. Their new, Colour Surge Eye Shadow Stay Matte $14.00 consists of 9 soft colors for day or evening. They have the smooth, soft, blendable, high-quality shadow formula you love, but with no pearle or shimmer. One stroke applies the color-- ophthalmologist tested and good for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. All of the colors are softly grayed. One trendy color that works for day of evening is "Stone Violet," a subdued, medium mauve. TIP: Matte shadows can actually make fine lines and wrinkles look softer. Apply lighter shades from lash to brow. Use deeper shades in the crease, as a liner, or all over lids. Blend upward and outward to desired intensity. For good eye health, mascaras really should be replaced every six months, so it’s probably time for you to consider getting a new one about now. Two inexpensive, new mascaras from Maybelline provide different types of benefits. Eye catching in it’s chunky, chartreuse tube with purple metallic rim and lettering is the Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara $7.47. It has an oversized, chunky brush (I love these for one-swipe coloring, volume and thickening) and delivers long, lush and intense lashes in a flash. The big brush, coupled with a unique, thickening formula with collagen, makes it easy for the wand and the mascara to get to all of your lashes–even the tiny ones. One coat was all it took. Two made lashes even more dramatic. There are two shades of black. I tried the “Classic Black” for everyday. I really thought this one made lashes pretty darn glam and I was happy with it, but apparently there is also a “Glam Black” that really make lashes even more lush and dramatic. If you prefer a slimmer-sized mascara, the Define-A-Lash Volume Waterproof Mascara $7.95 is a good choice for a good product that delivers as it should. It has a rose colored, more traditionally-sized tube, and a generously-sized, elastomer, bristle-shaped brush that grips each lash and colors, lengthens, and plumps it. The high-tech brush isn’t the only innovation. There’s also a flexible wiper that conforms to the shape of the brush, so the brush comes out clean and without clumps, every time. This one colored and lengthened beautifully, and since now it’s waterproof, you get longer wear out of it. It comes in “Very Black” and “Brown.” The modest price might entice you to buy both colors. IsaDora is a line of cosmetics that was created in Sweden, and offers very affordable products--recently featured in InStyle magazine. For Fall, the company has launched "Bare Beauty," wearable colors in neutral shades that work with all skin tones The newest Eye Shadow Palette $19.00 features a slim, black, mirrored compact with a peek-a-boo strip on the cover that lets you see the five, matte, nude shades inside. The compact also has a very nice dual-ended makeup brush with a sponge tip and a slim, well-rounded bristle brush. These pressed powder shadows are quite silky, and opaque enough that you won’t need to layer on the color much, unless you want a really, really intense look. The colors start with a cream, light and dark taupe, a golden brown, and chocolate brown. These colors can be mixed and matched in a huge variety of ways. The colors are so classic that they work well with everything, but especially for daytime. You can use the deeper shades for a moderately "glam" evening eye–but you won’t end up looking so "smoky" that one might think you had a black eye–these are flawless, foolproof, easy to use–a good buy, too. Rock and roll will never die, and neither will glitter and metallics. Let's face it, the "glam" quotient of a glitter and shimmer can't be denied, and if you want to be in the spotlight, sparkle and shimmer is a must. N.Y.C. Color has several inexpensive, updated ways to express yourself with sparkle and shimmer this season. Sparklers $3.99 are loose metallic eye shadow with concentrated pigments housed in an easy to use, rollerball format. "Amethyst" is a flattering, soft mauve, while "Citrine" gives you a soft, golden color that looks gloriously glam, on eyelids (apply heavily for a true metallic look). MarbleEyes $3.99 gives you a very soft metallic look in a pressed powder format. It's available in "Tiger's Eye" is a metallic, champagne beige, and there's also amazing "Aquamarine." The colors in this little, round compact swirl around each other like a topographic map, but on your lids, you get a pop of color. Mine was a lovely teal that is trendy, but adds true interest to eyelids. Bold color is hot, and MarbleEyes gives it to you for a pittance! For a truly long-lasting, multi-tasking Creme Liner/Shadow, N.Y.C. Color offers MetalEyes $4.99. This richly pigmented cream shadow/liner comes in a little, screw cap jar with a mini eye liner brush. I thought the solid product might be difficult to control, but I quickly discovered that it goes on smoothly as a liner, and it also blends beautifully to become a great "smoky" eye shadow. "Onyx" is black made less basic with a slightly metallic finish,. "Topaz" is a definitely not basic brown/bronze, also with a subtle, metallic finish. These go on easily, but it took eye makeup remover or lots of scrubbing with soap and water to remove them. Put them on in the A.M. and you won't worry about them again.
I adore Minis, and this Fall
Bourjois has a bunch of them--can you say: "J'adore?"
Bourjois: Mini Mascara is not only small enough to carry on your
keychain with the included mini lanyard, but it comes in great colors.
“Utra Bleu” is modern and sophisticated–a marine blue that gives lashes
enough definition, but that’s softer and more chic than traditional
black. Ditto “Ultra Gris,” a medium dark, modern grey. *more
Bourjois minis are reviewed in the LIPS section of this column. The
Bourjois effet Luiere Iluminating Eyeshadow Trio $29.00 gives
you a coordinated light, medium and dark shade of Bourjois's
famous baked, pressed power shadow in five color combos. There’s
an iridescent highlighter and the medium and dark shades can be worn
solo, as a liner, definer, or mixed and matched with other Bourjois
shadows. We tried “#53 Les Naturels” featuring a soft ivory light beige,
and soft medium brown – perfect with Fall’s tweeds, wools, and earthy
tones for day. For day or evening #44 Les Verts” provides three chic
shades of mint green–layer them for more intensity for a night look, or
make eyes pop with a softer, daytime application. Add more color
and definition with a pencil liner. Bourjois has so many great
ones. Three we love are: Volume Clubbing Liner $16.00
that stays on all night and comes in 6 intense shades (I particularly
like "42 Gris Tecktonic," an eye-catching, soft metallic pewter.
Regard Effet Duochrome Eyeliner $12.50 combines two liner colors
in one pencil–clever! My favorite is “Noir Emeraude,” a blackened
emerald that looks really stunning with just about every color shadow.
Regard Effet Metalisse $12.60 is a waterproof metallic eyeliner
in 6 shimmery shades, with good for your skin jojoba oil, Vitamin E, and
Cotton oil. If I counted correctly, there are 5 additional eye
liners by Bourjois to try.
Mineral makeup is all the rage, but I've yet to review many mineral eye liners. Now that's new and easy on the eyes and your wallet is the Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Eyeliner $9.95 by L'Oreal. Loose mineral powder shadows in five soft-but-deep shades" onyx, bronze, olive, cocoa and slate, come in an all-in-one shaker jar. Unscrew the jar's top and use the attached, slant-tip applicator to apply a soft, gentle line of color to the edge of your lids. Powder liners are a good choice for anyone who find liquid liners too harsh or too difficult to apply, and mineral powder is especially kind to those with sensitive eyes, and for contact lens wearers. It's a little challenging to draw a super-fine line with this product, but it makes a lovely, natural, great for everyday liner that can also pinch-hit as an eye shadow! There's also a mineral mascara from L'Oreal to consider: Bare Naturale Luminous Lengthening Mascara $9.99. The fiber and paraben-free brush has tiny, soft bristles pick up color to lengthen even those hard-to-capture-and-color, lashes to softly coat them with color and a bit of a sheen. The product does contain minerals and has 86% natural ingredients: mica, iron oxides, bismuth, and aloe, Vitamin E, jojoba oil, and panthenol, along with other ingredients, making it good for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. There are three shades; Black Brown, Black, and Blackest Black.
GREAT FOUNDATION & BLUSH:
Nothing can eliminate all lines and wrinkles, but, thankfully, technology has produced a number of products that can minimize the look of those lines. The Un-Wrinkle Pressed Powder $35.00 by Peter Thomas Roth, for example, is a luminous, lightweight, translucent powder that you can wear alone or over other products, that helps to diffuse the look of lines and wrinkles, with anti-aging peptides and neuropeptides. On the surface, this product looks like any other in it's softly rounded square mirrored compact, but it has several unusual, high-tech ingredients. This is a wonderful product and I liked it so much it was a product of the week on the Advice Sisters blog. Read the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog. The first thing I noticed (and liked) about the new, Instant Age Rewind Custom Face Perfector $9.99 by Maybelline was the packaging. A small, round compact with clear window swivels open to reveal the creamy foundation on top, and a handy well with sponge applicator and mirror, beneath. It’s compact and modern, and kind of fun to use. But this cream foundation does a lot more than just look good in the package. It has SPF 18, to shield your skin from the sun’s rays. Silk touch powders replace old fashioned, heavy oils which, along with other patented ingredients, help make this the creamiest, most easily blendable foundation I’ve tried in a long while. Lightweight waxes offer a product that’s opaque for cook coverage, but not cake-y. Maybelline has thought of everything to make this foundation, fierce! There's also a clever, multi-tasking sponge applicator. The Concentrated sponge/white site delivers a full-coverage to hide age spots or whatever else you’d like to eliminate. The Soft blender puff/pink side gives you sheer coverage from the same product. My skin looked nearly flawless with the opaque sponge, but it was moistly matte, not mask-like. Even better, the foundation glided forgivingly over dry spots and fine lines. I love an inexpensive, effective multi-tasker, and this one is absolutely it! ! There are eight different shades from light (Ivory) to Tan to tempt everyone.
Chanel's Joues Contraste $42.00 is the blush of the season. Inside the iconic, shiny black mirrored compact complete with nice mini blush brush, is a silky pressed powder blush that goes on sheer and silky, smooth and perfect. The blush seems to melt into your skin, blurring the line between color and skin, making the flush look like it's your own--only better. Skin looks "lit from within" for real! "Rose Dust" is a is a petty and natural rose with a hint of this seasons "it" color--plum. No worries that you'll look like an escapee from "Charlie's Angels" (the original) because this rosed plum is warm and natural, and all new. We think this is a "must-have" to update your look all season long.
Minerals are so popular, and now you can get the benefits to suit all budgets. Rimmel London Lasting Finish Mineral Powder Foundation $8.00 is not only inexpensive, it comes in one of the easiest and mess-free packages to use--an all in one jar of loose mineral power with attached sponge applicator. The loose powder is quite sheer, in 5 blendable shades for pink and neutral undertones. The powder has more than 95% minerals and antioxidants so it's good for your skin, and the light-diffusing powder helps minimize pores and hides imperfections. This isn't a full coverage foundation, but it's great for daily use for those who want smooth looking skin without wearing too much makeup. I also like the fact that you can use this as a sheer foundation by itself, or dust it over a foundation as a finishing powder for longer-lasting coverage plus skin and beauty bennies. I am so delighted to be able to include Aveda products in the Advice Sisters What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review columns again. You can see all the Aveda's Uruku reviews on the Advice Sisters Blog, where the collection was posted as Product of the Week, back in August, including the Uruku Bronzer $22.50, the fabulous new, kabuki-style. non-animal Uruku Bronzer Brush $37.50 and the lovely Cheek-Lip Creme $16.00. Get the entire Aveda URUKU Collection review on the Advice Sisters Blog.
An inexpensive highlighter/blush that adds shimmer and glow, without too much color, is "Natural" Skin Loving Fresh Glow Flaked Mineral Blush $7.95 by Prestige. This velvety-smooth , multi-dimension pressed powder minerals blush looks slightly peachy, with flecks of soft brown, but on your skin it simply looks luminous. We dusted the lightweight blush on our skin with a big, soft brush, and even put a bit on our collarbone, eyelids, and dotted a bit on the middle part of our lower lips to make them more pouty. It's very affordable, very natural, very hip '70's,. "Breck Girl" meets Farrah...fun! N.Y.C. Color keeps the glowing, going, with Chroma Face Glow $4.99. Large, round compacts with clear lids showcase a riot of sheer, luminous, swirls of blush in peach tones ("Sunstone") and pink/mauves ("Moonstone"). Use a soft blush brush or Kabuki brush to add a hint of color and glowing shimmer to highlight cheeks, brows, chin and forehead. The marbleized pigments blend to softly flatter just about every skin tone. It's a pretty way to perk up your complexion, and it won't cost a fortune, either.
LOVELY FALL LIPS:
Looking for luxe lipstick this Fall? Look no further than Dior,
for easy to wear, rich color that instantly updates your look. For
example, Rouge Dior Replenishing Lip Color $27.00 gives you great
color and a moisturizing formula that makes even dry lips look lovely.
"Western Beige" is a better-than-bare nude that leaves lips with a moist
finish, while "Fiction Brown" takes "earthy" to a new level, with a
slick of warm brown that's made for Fall's colors. I also love Crème
de Gloss Satin $25.50. It's one of the silkiest wanded lip
colors I've ever tried, but it combines the desirable attributes of a
full color lipstick with a creamy, luminous gloss--and it's a
beauty treatment. It has moisturizing bennies, thanks to a concentrate
of ultra-nourishing ingredients. The non-sticky, soothing, smooth
lip color delights just as-is, but six hours after you've applied it,
the hydration of your lips supposedly increases by 25% My lips
felt better right away and looked incredible. They felt amazing,
too---I really couldn't stop applying this! "Creamy Burgundy"
gives your lips a rich, glowy wine colored wine-mmmmm!
What do you get when you mix rich, hydrating lipstick with great color
and a subtle rosed scent? You get Chanel's Rouge Allure
Luminous Satin Lip Color $30.00. The lipstick actually feels
kitten soft as you brush it on your lips, and the satiny finish makes
lips sexy. The unusual, sleek, push-button case means the top
won't fall off in your handbag, and it's so much fun to use! The
lustrous color feels so great on your lips--and it lasts and lasts and
lasts! I love the lipstick, subtly etched with CHANEL right
on it--a true designer original! My suggestion for Fall is
"Crazed" is a beige-y/pink shimmer that works on everyone, with
everything you own. Another great choice for now and forever is
the super long-lasting Rouge Hydrabase Creme Lipstick $27.00. The
silky lipstick packs a real fashion punch--really great, moistly-matte
color that also treats lips to plenty of moisture. There are three
new shades for Fall: " Simply Pink" (coral pink); "Great Copper"
(soft copper) and my fave pick: "Fantastic Plum" a rich, deep wine-y
plum that looks incredible on every complexion. If you're deep
color-averse, blot this one and add a slick of lip gloss for the sexiest
lip stain, ever. If you love rich color, use as-is and drink in the
compliments! , Deep, red lips were all over
the Fall runways, but for minimalists, there's hope. Nude lips and fresh
faces were also popular. Prestige Classic Lipstick $4.50
translates this nude trend into a wearable, shimmery, champagne nude
called "Spunky," that looks modern with a Lightshine Gloss Lip
Liner $4.95. The soft and silky gel liner slides on
leaving just a bit of shine--pretty enough to color in lips and wear
as-is (but of course it also keeps your lipstick from wandering outside
the line). We like "Banyan," a warm, deep nude liner used to
completely line and fill in lips, with an overlay of shimmery
"Spunky" Classic Lipstick. This nude lip treatment is modern and
not a bit dull or ho-hum!
5th Avenue Bath Co. has affordable spa-type
products, many of which are truly unisex. One we love is the
Luxurious Lip Balm $8.95 in "Coconut Lemongrass." The simple, swivel
up stick dispenses a clear, moistly-matte balm that is so silky, it just
about melts into your skin. The luxe blend of 100% natural
ingredients makes short work of dry, cracked, or peeling skin, thanks to
a seriously-deep moisturizing blend of Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Jojoba
Oil, Shea Oil, and Vitamin E. The coconut lemongrass scent is delicious,
surprising and sophisticated, with a hint of lemon and the smoothness of
coconut, but without any cloying sweetness. Seven fragrances in all
include "Buttercream" and "Wintermint." The clear, green plastic
packaging is plain, but the product? Simply great! Flower
Fusion–it sounds like a good for you, tea, but Origins Flower Fusion
is a
Hydrating Lip Color $16.00 with floral extracts that comes in 26
fabulous shades. The product helps your lips look good, and also does
good things for your skin thanks to flower wax – the star ingredient in
these lipsticks. Flower wax is created naturally in plant petals and
leaves, and it’s the plant’s first line of defense against invading
insects, air pollutants, and weather. The wax essentially protects the
flower from dehydration. This ingredient has an antioxidant and soothing
effect on your lips (although I seriously doubt it will repel insects
and I’m not about to volunteer to stand in a field, and see what
happens)! Five essential oils, beeswax, and a number of other soothing,
softening and moisturizing ingredients make this a treatment as well as
a lip color. The lipstick slides on easily from the metallic, coral/pink
tube, and feels pamperingly, enticingly nice on my lips. The colors are
quite lovely. I particularly liked "Peony" for fall. It’s a limited
edition, berry stain that gives you the best of the deep lips trend and
still manages to look pretty, wearable, and sexy. I also liked the
limited edition "Winter Rose," a shimmery, medium rose that can’t help
but make flatter—and if you’ve had too little sleep, the rose color will
add life to your lips when you need it the most. How could you not
love a product in a little pot called : "Jelly Balm?" The one
we're talking about is from the HIP (High Intensity Pigments)
line from L'Oreal Paris, This Jelly Balm $8.00 comes in a
little, clear, glass pot. Dip your finger into these little pots
of lip tint, and you'll be rewarded with the scent or caramel. The
silky, conditioning, balm/gloss/lip tint applies smoothly, and is
super-shiny and silky. The colors are as sheer as stained glass,
but not so completely "natural" that you can't see them. I love the
scent, the feel, and the six colors (we tried "Luscious," a perfect-for
Fall- berry/wine stain that flatters everyone and lets you have the look
of deep colored lips without the "goth" factor. Use a lip brush and
you'll avoid the "dip factor" (sticking your finger in the pot to
apply it).
Bravo Bourjois -- for making some of most favorite lip
glosses, small! The Advice Sisters have already reviewed
Clinique's High Impact Lip Colour SPF 15 $14.00 comes in a
ribbed, silvery matte tube with shiny rings for a striking accent.
But the product inside is what really counts, of course. Define your
lips first, with the creamy, sharpener-in-the-cap, Clinique Defining
Liner for Lips $14.00. Then slather on a good-for-your-lips,
High Impact Lip Colour SPF 15
that moisturizes like a lip treatment, colors like a lipstick, and
lasts for up to 8 hours. This lipstick has UVA/UVB SPF 15 protection,
too. The silky, moist free makes you feel pampered. It's like a spa
treatment for dry lips--with more than 20 great color choices! For Fall,
try "Sunset Glow," a slightly shimmery brick that gives life to your
face, even if your Summer tan is mostly faded. "Rosette," is a pure,
lush, deep pink perfect for all complexions. There's nothing better than
a lipstick that cares for your skin. Clinique's High
Impact Lip Colour SPF 15 fits the description, perfectly.
These are "must-haves" for now and all year long.
Aveda's Uruku Lip Pigment $14.00 is the type of rich, intense
color that women who love lipstick, dream about. It has rich
color, but it's more of a stain than a coat of flat color. The
product has the natural ingredients, including conditioner conditioners,
that Aveda is already famous for, such as: Babassu oil, organic
Jojoba oil, and vitamin E mixed with a nice, uplifting blend of minty
organic essential oils that make the scent, part of the pleasure. My top
pick is a trendy deep wine called: "Maracuja." It as a bit of shimmer
and softness so while it looks polished and deep, it doesn't look scary.
"Sheer Ivory Nut" is a shimmery, soft, warm nude, that is a welcome
relief from the season's dark colors and I liked it as a moist,
comforting base for tinted lip glosses, too.
N.Y.C. Color's lipsticks for Fall, from their Metro Metals
collection, give you glam lips for less than the cost of a sandwich.
the Lip Lustre Lipstick $2.99 is surprisingly hydrating, silky
and nice to wear. "Garnet" gives your lips a moist, metallic, berried
finish that surprisingly, flattered everyone who tried it. 'Amber" is a
very soft, golden color, that I liked with a slick of vanilla-scented
Lip Lustre Lip Gloss $2.99. Worn by itself, gives lips a sheer,
golden touch with tons of shine but punches up the color of your other,
favorite lip products, too. The packaging is no frills, but the products
mirror the designers, for a lot less.
I first fell in love with Korres products when I was in Japan,
staying at a posh hotel. But Korres is actually a Greek company
that creates lovely hair, body and face care products with highly
concentrated natural active ingredients. Keep your lips looking and
feeling healthy, with Cherry Oil Lip Gloss $16.00, a wanded tube
that dispenses a naturally-looking, pink-ish gloss that has cherry and
jojoba oils to hydrate and soften your lips, plus antioxidant Vitamins E
and C. The color is noticeable, but "nude," so you can slick on a coat,
and feel "polished" without too much fuss. For a great, moist, lip
balm, we like Korres Lip Butter $9.00 in "Guava." All the
Lip Butters have shea butter to moisturize. Guava is clear,
but there are three others with a hint of sheer tint. The highly
effective balm is a treat for girls and boys.
The newest look on the runways (other than deep lips) was a nearly
nude lip. IsaDora Moisturizing Lip Gloss $12.00 gives you this
great look, for much less. Their launched "Bare Beauty," collection for
Fall is full or wearable colors in neutral shades that work with all
skin tones such as "Mocca Pink"–this lovely, wanded lip gloss in a slim,
squared-off tube colors with a semi-sheer wash of nude gloss that is
neither too "egg-y" or too brown. Worn alone, it wont sabotage your
chic-ness factor. It simply tones down pink-ish lips to a chic flesh
color that looks modern. The shine factor is modest, but moist and the
feel is as silky and luxe as higher prices glosses. I like the way this
makes my lips feel pampered and conditioned. If you want to go "bare"
this season, this is the way to do it without breaking the bank.
Rimmel London Shock Gloss $5.50 has everything you want in a
super-shiny gloss: a silky, "no goop" formula, sheer color,
wet-look shine, and an easy way to apply it perfectly with a flexible
"spatula" instead of a sponge or brush tip. One swipe of this
applicator will coat lips, effortlessly. The gloss is also good for your
lips, with antioxidants Vitamins A, C and E, and Green Tea
Extract. The shocking pink cap adds an eye-catching note and helps
you locate it in the recesses of your handbag. We tried "Intense,"
slightly lilac in the tube but nearly clear on lips--what these glosses
do best is help create a sexy, pouty look. Wear them over a deeper
lip product if you want sexy shine, but more color. There's
also A cherry and a pink. A good value for a good gloss.
MAGNIFICENT MAKEUP PALETTES:
We became instant fans of celebrity makeup artist Julie
Hewitt and love her multi-tasking luxe, mirrored makeup
palettes. They are striking squares of black cardboard with magnetic
closures. Pull off the Japanese-inspired ivory and black "kimono" print
wrappers, held fast with a single red dot and find makeup color
inside that are modern and trendy, but not so outrageous that you’d have
trouble figuring out how to wear them. The colors are not only
beautiful, they are of the highest quality --long lasting , true to
color, and easily blendable. Earth toned neutrals are a staple of Fall.
The pressed powder Soiree Palette $40.00 does neutrals without
being bland. Four large squares of silky pressed powder come in warm and
cool shades of beige, a soft goldenrod which can be used to define, or
line as well as a lid color, and an inky brown/grey that will make the
perfect dramatic eye, or an effortless powder liner. The multi-tasking,
creamy and shimmery Boudoir Palette $48.00 is also
earth-inspired, but this palette has two colors that are "cheekies"
(cheek and lip shine) and the other two are "shimmies" (face, eyes, lips
and body). All can be layered for more color, mixed, matched, and
used wherever you want them. Inside you'll find "Vampire," and
of-the-moment, sheer merlot stain for lips that you might wear on lids,
too, and as a trendy blush. "Natural" is a pure medium flesh,
shiny and warm, and universally flattering wherever you choose to smooth
it. "Cleo," is stunning for a touch of glam. It's a super-shimmery
copper that add a bit of the Midas touch to anything and everyone.
Ditto, "Goldie," a pearly, glimmery, silvery bit of glamour to
wear alone, or over something else to make it more lovely. This palette
is a perfect travel companion, to take you from day to evening, New York
to L.A.
FABULOUS FRAGRANCES:
Badgley Mischka makes amazing evening fashions. I had a
backstage and front-row seat for their runway show several
years ago, when the duo had just made a comeback collection for Fashion
Week. Elegant designs made for movie stars seem to be their focus, even
though they do have some fashions for the rest of us. Not surprisingly,
Badgley Mischka Parfum $225.00 1 fl.oz; $90.00 3.4 fl. oz. Eau de
Parfum spray, $65.00 1.7 fl. oz, $45.00 1 fl. oz (also a body lotion
and body cream), was inspired by the look and feel of 40's glam in
Hollywood “vintage with a modern twist” according to the press
literature. The scent is a classic fruity floral, starting with top
notes of red wild berries, fresh peach, and creme de cassis. The heart
is floral: jasmine, white peony, and osmanthus flowers. These could make
a fragrance feel very sweet or overly romantic, but the drydown adds a
modern, designer touch: sandalwood, suede musks, caramel amber and
patchouli fur mystique give it a glamorous, interesting character. The
fragrance is not too heavy. it's the type of scent that will change on
your skin over time, making it yours, alone. The bottle is a modern take
on a classic, rectangular glass, highlighting the amber juice.
Nice touches are an elongated, angular glass cap accented with a silver
bezel, and an elegant, engraved nameplate.
Ed Hardy has turned tattoo art into high
fashion not just with clothing, but with “his and her” fragrances: Ed
Hardy for Men and Ed Hardy for Women $55 1.7 oz , $75 3.4 oz. The
men’s package has a close-up of the face of a snarling tiger on a field
of black. The women's fragrance features a hot pink background, a skull,
heart and roses, and a banner with: "love kills slowly.”
Even if you still think “tats” are still just for sailors on a drunk,
these tattoo-inspired scents will please you. The fragrances were
designed by two different “noses” at Givaudan. Perfumer Caroline
Sabas created a fruity floral for Ed Hardy for Women At
the top, there is the fresh and fruity , young-at-heart scent of apple,
grapefruit, strawberry and mango. The heart is a romantic, feminine
freesia. the base includes a significant vanilla and a bit of amber.
While the overall scent is fruity, the base notes and freesia make it
unusual and modern. My general sense is that while it really is meant
for a younger crowd of hipsters, this is an easy fragrance to wear with
work duds, as well as leather, studs and (of course),
tattoos. **to see the review of Ed Hardy’s Men’s scent, scroll to the
Just For the Guys Section of this "What Works" column.
Airline restrictions, small purses, and the desire to carry scent with
me wherever I go has made me a huge fan of the rollerball fragrance. The
La Vanilla Eau de Parfum Rollerball $18.00 .32 fl. oz for
example, is an inexpensive but lovely option that features LaVanilla’s
lovely vanilla-centric fragrances in an elegant, slim, squared-off
column of clear glass with shiny silver top. The rollerball applicator
delivers just as much or as little scent as I want, in a clean and easy
application that won’t leak or break in my bag. There are five different
vanilla-with scents, but each is created 100% active botanicals, with
essential oils, 30 essential vitamins and minerals, 19 amino acids, and
antioxidants, plus soothing willowherb, and hydrating olive leaf . These
are not only good to smell, they’re good for your skin. I tried the
"Vanilla Grapefruit" blend, at once invigorating and sexy-smooth, with
notes of Grapefruit, Bergamot, Lime, Orange, Cedarwood, Heliotrope,
Madagascar Vanilla. There is also a Pure Vanilla, and Vanilla Blossom
(florals mixed with Vanilla). All smell decadently delicious!
BATH AND BODY TREATS:
You simply have to exclaim: "delicious!!" when you smell the
raspberry sherbet and pink-colored products from Jaqua in their
new, Raspberry Buttercream Frosting line. The scent reminds me of
a bowl of raspberries, with just a touch of sweet frosting. It’s
an adult fruity treat although younger girls will want to borrow yours.
You might just be tempted to eat the sherbet-colored, Raspberry
Buttercream Frosting Shower Creme Hydrating Body Wash $18.00 8 oz.
but it does tastier things for your skin from the outside. Kukui
nut oil, Vitamins B5, A, and E, and macadamia and evening primrose oils,
plus fruit and aloe extracts, make your skin feel soft, smooth, and
refreshed, while the creamy formula lathers nicely. We also tried the
Raspberry Buttercream Frosting Hand Creme $8.00 2 oz. The
lightly moisturizing, raspberry-scented hand creme is a 2 oz flip top
tube is travel-friendly, and so much fun to use you might forget that
you’re actually supposed to use it to hydrate your hands. Meadowfoam
seed oil, fruit extracts, and Vitamins A and give your skin a treat,
while the raspberry scent treats your senses. Other products in the line
include a slightly tinted and raspberry scented lip gloss, a lip gloss
ring, and a body butter. If you get one, you’ll want them all!
M by Mariah Carey Eau de Parfum Spray $62.50 3.3 fl. oz, $52.50 1.7
fl. oz, $39.50 1 fl. oz , distributed by Elizabeth Arden
comes in a romantic lilac-colored bottle that looks like a Tiare blossom
on the verge of opening. On the top of the glass bottle is a large
butterfly, wings outspread, on the top, banded with a braided silver
rim. This beautiful bottle (designed with Mariah and Jean Anteretter
of Elizabeth Arden) is a small work of art, definitely dressing
table-worthy. I love this fragrance for Fall so I'm re-suggesting it
although we recently reviewed it. Read the review from the
What Works March/April 2008 Column
agoodnightkiss a line of all-natural, vegan, bath and body
products, with amazing scents, thanks to blending of essential oils in a
thoughtful way that helps to showcase the aromatic properties of each
ingredient. When you just need to "get away" from the day, or unwind
before a special event, their Tub Tea Blend Sachets $28.00/5 in
shiny, silver "tea: tins are just the thing. Each has natural extracts,
herbs, antioxidants, and vitamins. The colorful label is informative and
offer not just what is in each strongly-scented sachet, but also
suggests the personality traits of the person who might enjoy using that
scent the most. No. 7 "Start Something" (for those who are hopeful,
energetic, resilient, enthusiastic and transcendent) is my new favorite,
although I’m not sure I am all those things at the same time. But the
rather spicy blend that includes pine, lemongrass oil, cinnamon bark,
spearmint, and lavadin oil, among it’s invigorating ingredients is just
the thing when your energy is fading. No. 8 "Seaside Solace" (for those
who are centered, loving, fluid, harmonious and peacemakers) has a
bright, fresh, marine scent that I think would entice a man into your
tub in an instant. Dead sea salt, cinnamon, spearmint, and passionflower
remind me of the sea, and Summer. No. 9 Caribbean Splendor (for those
who are relaxed, adaptable, intuitive and have a sense of humor) has
organic tofu, organic white tea, and organic brown rice among it’s
unique ingredients, but it doesn’t smell like a sushi bar–it has a sexy,
almost powdery scent that will please him and well as her, and will
surely enhance romance.. All you have to do is drop one of the
pre-measured sachets into a warm bath and soak for 15 minutes, and
attitude adjustment is guaranteed!
As someone who got up before dawn to watch Princess Diana and Prince
Charles, web, I guess I am a bit intrigued by royalty. So it's
no wonder that I was curious about Kings & Queens products,
inspired by herbs associated with royalty throughout the ages. All of
the products have Pomegranate, Blue Egyptian Lotus and Malachite. The
Caspar Myrrh Shower Gel $9.00 10.14 fl. oz is a clear, red gel
cleanser that features myrrh. In case you aren't sure what this
is, it's the gift Caspar, one of the three Magi (Kings) supposedly gave
to the Baby Jesus. This shower gel smells spicy but not cloying, fresh
and sexy. Myrrh was valued almost as much as gold in ancient
times..and it makes a wonderful shower and bath experience. I also was
impressed with the Body Butter Sultan of Granada Lemon Flower $15.00
6.76 fl. oz. The flip-top tube, decorated with a pretty green and
white design, dispenses a very nice moisturizer with shea butter,
coconut oil and beeswax. It's not at all greasy but it's packed with
emollient power, and the thick cream melts at body temperature so it
absorbs without a struggle, leaving my skin feeling soft and slightly
scented with a light, lemony scent. I was impressed with this line, new
to our reviews this column. They're a fun way to treat yourself
"royally" but still stay within a budget. The entire line is
modestly priced you can make an impressive splurge of the Body Milks,
Body Butters, Shower Gels, Shimmery Body Milks and Shower Gels and still
have coins left in your royal coffer!
5th Avenue Bath Co. new to our reviews this
column, offer products made with premium fruit and vegetable oils and
butters, botanicals and essential and fragrance oils. The company
uses many unrefined and organic ingredients and avoids unnecessary
additives whenever possible. Most of these products are made to order in
small batches to ensure quality. If all this sounds like you can't
afford them, think again! All the 5th Avenue Bath Co. we tried were
under $10.00! For example, the Body Balm $6.99, in a
handy, swivel-up stick, smells just like vanilla wafers, and moisturizes
even seriously parched skin with mango butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil,
pumpkin seed oil, emu oil, & vitamin E. If this doesn't soothe
your dry, itchy skin, I can't image what would. Guys love it too,
not just for the yummy scent and the soothing emollients, but also for
the travel-friendly packaging. The Stress Relief Eau de Parfum $15.99
.35 oz has a calming, herbal blend of essential oils: lavender,
sage, and a hint of peppermint and exotic star anise. Both men and women
will enjoy this soft fragrance that can boost your energy and attitude,
especially on a rough day. Other rollerball scents include:
Honey and nuts are good for your body on the inside, but they're also
deliciously decadent to slather on your skin on the outside, too.
For 50
years, Perlier has been admired for it's beautifully crafted and
nicely scented bath and body products created from flowers, botanicals
and beeswax cultivated on 150 acres of botanical gardens. New and
wonderful is Perlier's honey & mixed nuts line of bath and
body products that gives you lots to feel good about, inside and out.
Almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts are mixed with organic honey from Pisa.
Honey helps the regeneration of damaged skin tissue while nourishing and
moisturizing the skin, and improving tone and elasticity. The yummy
mixture is full of essential fatty acids and vitamins for your skin.
We tried the Bath & Shower Cream $18.50 8.4 fl. oz that also has
olive oil, to soothe and smooth your skin. The richly lathering pearly
white cream smells rich and clean, and feels luxuriously pampering on
our skin. There's also a Hand Cream $15.00 3.3 fl. oz that
soothes and smoothes skin without being greasy--just glorious! plus a
Soft Body Butter $40.00, and a Talc $14.50. The land of
nuts and honey never felt so good!
Heavenly Bodies $15.90 7 fl. oz; $7.95 3.5 oz. by Lush fulfills
a fantasy of taking rich chocolate and oranges, and smearing them all
over your body. This butter-creamy solid chunk of "chocolate" is really
a detoxifying, nourishing skin bar that cleans and gently exfoliates,
while satisfying your sweet tooth with an orange chocolate smell that's
hard to describe, but that's indescribably delicious. There is cocoa
(Flaked Chocolate), Orange Blossom Infusion, and Fresh Orange Juice in
this unique bathing bar, and also Rhassoul Mud (to help slough off
dead skin cells). Jojoba Oil and Fair Trade Cocoa Butter soothe
and soften skin. The yummy scent comes from Tangerine Oil,
Sweet Orange Oil, Vanilla Absolute and , Cocoa Absolute. This is the
first chocolate-with-orange-scented item that I've ever tried that I
actually consider better than just a bar of chocolate, because it won't
ruin my diet and it does good things for my body while it sweetens my
day or night. TIP: if you want to get your special guy into the
tub with you....Heavenly Bodies might just be the perfect lure.
Afterwards, store the bar in a well drained soap dish and keep dry
between uses. Buttercreams melt easily because of the high natural
butters content, so don't leave them in a hot place -- you might even
leave them in the freezer of the fridge during the warmer months to keep
them super-solid. A clingy friend, a bad cold, even debts
are easier to get rid of than Cellulite. Still, hope springs eternal.
Bliss created FatGirl Sleep $38.00 6 oz. to help us at
least dream of losing those nasty skin dimples. The lightly,
freshly scented lavender jar of cream has an encapsulated complex called
SlenderiZZZe to works up to 6 hours to tone you skin while you sleep.
FatGirl Sleep has sacred lotus extract to help reduce the “orange peel”
look and prevent the bloated look you get from water retention. That
alone should make you look slimmer in your swimsuit, but it also firms
up skin and helps fight future dimpling. Red Algae Extract fights hard
to reduce the appearance of water retention, while lavender essence
calms and relaxes (so you really drift off to dreamland feeling already
slimmer). A moisturizing cream that helps you fall asleep--genius!
But this little jar of cream also has advanced moisture binders that
help make skin look nourished, moisturized, nicer. I didn’t
test this long enough to see real results, but I do believe!!!!
TIP: To keep your now-toned skin looking great,
follow with Bliss’s FatGirlSlim and Love Handler come morning.
SENSATIONAL SKINCARE:
L’Oréal
Pléntitude
has recently introduced Revitalift Radiant Smoothing
Wet Cleansing Towelettes $6.99 Pkg/30. These portable,
single-use cleansing cloths have Vitamin C and gentle glycerin to remove
every trace of makeup and leave your skin soft. What I love about this
type of product is that you simple, wipe, and you're done! The
non-liquid format means you won't end up with a mess in your bag or
tote, and you can take them anywhere to freshen up any time--even on
airplane. They're non-greasy, but they do leave skin feeling pampered,
not dry and tight. The cloths also provides the benefits of a gentle
exfoliating action. These cloths are meant to be used with other
Revitalift, anti-aging products, but you can use them just because
they're nice, and you also don't have to have maturing skin or be in the
over 40 category --the kind-to-your-skin cleansing clothes will appeal
to women of just about any age with skin that's dry or fragile. TIP:
there's also a Revitalift Radiant Smoothing Cream Cleanser
$6.99 5.0 oz. in a tube. It's got the same, skin-pampering benefits
as the towelettes, plus a
gentle exfoliating action to keep your skin glowing. Keep a
tube at home, and take the cleansing clothes on the road with you.

Custom Search The scientists at Estee Lauder think they've discovered the
reason why you look so tired by the end of the day. They found (in a
nutshell) that facial lines and wrinkles actually become more
accentuated during the course of the day. Estee Lauder's new
Perfectionist (CP+) Wrinkle Lifting Serum Corrector for
Lines/Wrinkles/Age Spots $80.00 1.7 fl. oz; $55.00 1 fl. oz aims to
fix the problem with a blend of peptides, proteins and amino acids that
help boost the skin's natural collagen production that (in turn) helps
to strengthen the skin's inner support structure. The result? Less
lines and less tired-looking skin! This might not sound so
remarkable, but apparently, this light, fast-absorbing, non-greasy,
slightly smells like roses serum helps to boost collagen product not in
days, weeks, or months, but in as little as 2 hours, and you'll
look immediately better thanks to Estee Lauder's light diffusion
technology (don't ask me how they do it--but it's a combo of high tech
ingredients, not magic). I didn't use the product for the month required
to substantiate the claim of a 61% reduction in lines and wrinkles, but
my skin did look more even, softer, smoother, in less than a week. With
continued use, perhaps this serum could be the fountain of youth in a
bottle. Everyone has different skin challenges, but if you want a
light, easy to use, high-tech, skin enhancing serum, this is the best of
the newest and your skin will benefit! ABOUT THE ADVICE SISTERS REVIEWS: All product reviews are conducted by Alison Blackman Dunham. FALL FASHION ACCESSORIES):
Twisted Sister is a rock band, but Twisted Silver is something completely different. It's a line of jewelry (it even has it's own blog) featuring chic, fun, and amazingly affordable, cutting edge designs by Debra Mitchell, a wife and mother who has fashion experience and a love of unique things. "Twisted" items have appeared in Grammy and other gift bags, and on the Style Network's "How Do I Look?" with Finola Hughes. Fans include Oprah Winfrey, Maria Shriver, Melanie Griffith, and Tyra Banks (to name a few), The designer keeps things affordable by working in a variety of mixed basic metals such as brass, copper and aluminum. Some designs are even convertible (e.g. a necklace becomes bracelet). The web site features one product each week that is 50% off (launches of new designs are also discounted). The Advice Sisters were lucky enough to receive some Twisted Silver to review. My favorite piece is a "7" 7-piece bangle bracelet $50.00 in brass metal . it was As seen in the June issue of Lucky Magazine. There are thin, decorative rope bangles, and bolder, slightly textured, flat bangles, two of which feature a round "pet ID"- type tag that proclaims: "Twisted." The fun thing about this one is that the bangles are chained together with large links, so they're really one piece! It reminds me of a magic trick (linking rings) that my dad used to perform for us, but this bracelet "performs" a fashion function: Gypsy Woman-meets- City Girl. The look is "boho" and the tinkling sound will make you the hit of the club! I also love the Diva Necklace $50.00. Three delicate, filigree brass "flowers" let the beauty of your own skin tone shine through, giving this ladylike necklace the look and feel of a temporary tattoo. One of the three filigree disks is captured in the bar and link chain to hang at the side of your neck, the other two, dangle, along with around "pet ID" - type tag that proclaims: "Twisted." There are lots of silver earrings in the world, but I've never seen any quite like Twisted Silver's Lithe Long Silver $40.00 earrings. These are truly an example of: "less is more." Two very thin oblongs of silver-plated brass are held together with a slightly larger, matte, silver-plated brass links. These look like feathers, dangling softly from super-slim ear wires. If your hair is short they won't overpower, but they also won't get lost in long hair. These are so simple, and yet, amazingly eye-catching.
BEST BEAUTY HELPERS:
The "Jigsaw" design Artisan Slant Tip Tweezer $20.00 by Japonesque may seem at first to be a bit of a splurge. You can get drugstore tweezers for just a few dollars, after all. But these aren't just functional tweezers, they're a work of art. The design is a riot of hot pink, green, yellow, and blue "jigsaw" puzzle pieces that smoothly coats substantial, stainless steel with a deep, rich enamel finish. Smooth to the touch and easy to grip, the hand-filed precision tip is slanted for ease of use, so you will more easily pick up whatever it is you are aiming for without a struggle. The tweezer comes with it's own, black fabric travel pouch, too. Using a tweezer isn't usually all the enjoyable. It might not be any less painful to tweeze, but at least with the Artisan Slant Tip Tweezer it's a little more fun. This small investment will pay dividends for a long time!
Super-white teeth are all the rage these days, but personally, I’ve never been able to tolerate wearing a gooey mouthpiece or whitening strips for long. But toothpaste is something I use every day anyway, so a whitening toothpaste is less intimidating even if the results aren't quite as dramatic. So I was excited to try iwhite Toothpaste $6.99 by Sylphar. The multi-whitening action of this toothpaste helps remove surface stain and maintain teeth that have been professionally whitened, but it’s gentle, and won’t destroy your tooth enamel in the ultimate quest for pearly whites. I noticed that my teeth looked brighter after just one brushing--surface stains were lifted quite a bit. The toothpaste even helps to protect your teeth from cavities and keeps your breath, fresh. The white paste is peppermint-y, but not overpowering. What you can’t taste or see is the active ingredients in a special matrix, that help the paste penetrate for effective cleaning (the best reason to use a toothpaste in the first place) while it protects and gives you everyday whitening bennies. If you love coffee or red wine, or you haven’t given up those cigarettes yet, iwhite Toothpaste can keep your natural teeth looking their best, and help protect your investment if you’ve already whitened your teeth. The toothpaste is the last step in creating a brighter, whiter smile. TIP: iwhite has a unique light-activated whitening tray system for at home use, and a maintenance stick, should you wish to investigate them.

Would you love to have longer, more lush lashes that "wishing & hoping" won't make happen? Renew™ Eyelash Revitalizer $80.00 .24 fl. oz. by Rozgé Labs may be the answer you're seeking. Inside a silvery, eyeliner tube with slim-line brush wand (there's a mascara-type applicator that I would have preferred), is a product that encourages the growth of hair (on your eyelashes--but there's a Renew for eyebrows, too). It can be used by men as well as women. You simply use the fine-line brush applicator in the cap to apply a thin line to each eyelid near the root tip of your lashes--that's all there is to it. The ingredients in this product are supposed to work without irritating your eyes. I have really sensitive eyes and skin, but ever your guinea pig, I tried it anyway. The product didn't bother me, although there was a cooling feeling and a bit of a tingle. clear and has natural ingredients. The main ingredients are natural actives including tripeptide-1 (one of the two most popular tripeptides used in anti-aging products, used to prevent the breakdown of collagen); and Biotin (B vitamin used in hair regeneration products and for healthy hair growth). As for the claims? I didn't use it daily for 3-4 weeks necessary for results (and up to six months for significant change) so I can't honestly report that my lashes were so great I didn't need mascara. Used correctly and for a long period of time, this product could yield good results. Given the cost and inconvenience of false eyelashes and eyelash dying, it might be an economical solution for acquiring long, sexy lashes. TIP: You might want to try Renew Eyelash Revitalizer on a test patch on your arm before you put it on your eyes--and the package insert suggests that this is not for people under 18 years of age unless directed by a physician. Maybe you're not dancing in front of millions of television viewers like Mario Lopez and Crystal Hunt (who have both received Apara and Airplus products), but you can wear the same foot-saving items that they have. These decidedly unglamorous but absolutely necessary items keep me from being in pain, especially when I am standing in lines or during Fashion Week, when my "invisible friends" make it easier for me to keep my feet from being "fried," --tired, sore, and blistered. Now that Summer's over and you're slipping into stiletto shoes instead of open-backed sandals, Airplus for Her Hug My Heels $5.99 are the new generation of heel liners that prevent heels from slipping. If you can't make it without your mules, however, Apara's Slingies $7.99 are gel insole pads that help cushion the ball of your foot and keep it from sliding on open-toe shoes. Apara's Grippy Steps $7.99/pair help stop slips and falls. They're discrete black pads that attach firmly to the soles of your (dancing) shoes to keep you sure-footed whether you are on the dance floor or just on a slick surface. For the full sole-saving treatment, try Airplus for Her Save My Soles $9.99 clear, invisible gel innersole liners that fit into everything from sneakers to dress pumps.
Hair-reducing products, treatments and tools can make a difference in your "fuzz factor." One that's easy to use, effective, and inexpensive (relatively speaking compared to other treatments) is Get Out of Hair $35.00 6.5 oz. by Bliss. This unusual, flip-top tube of hair-minimizing cream moisturizes with willow bark extract to limit ingrown hairs. But it's the new Bliss "fuzzkill" complex that actually helps reduced the appearance of hair growth between shaves. While you aren't going to want to throw out the razors and stop going for waxes, the nicely moisturizing cream also has Vitamins C, E and A plus shea butter, that will make your newly-de-fuzzed body parts look and feel better. Reviewers said that their hair was also softer when it grew back, making the entire process, more pleasant. For all these reasons, it's a good, multi-tasking product we think you'll like. HARVEST HOME ACCESSORIES:
Unless you live on another planet, you've probably seen ads for OxiCleanVersatile Stain Remover on television. The tub of stain-fighting "crystals" is oxygen based and water activated, so when the cleaner hits (preferably hot) water it releases tiny air bubbles that help to release stains and make your laundry brighter while it works on stains. The product works best on organic stains like wine, coffee, food, and pet messes, as well as on mold and mildew, but it will help with other stains, too. OxiClean is a bleach-like product not suitable for all fabrics and all stains...read the label. TIP: You won't want to try this on dark clothing, but for grease stains and yellowing on white items, we made a "paste" with water of the product and gently rubbed it on the fabric, then laundered it. I learned this tip from a vintage clothing dealer who told me it's how she cleans all the antique linens "like new." It is worth putting one scoop in every load of laundry--even a mixed color load, to work it's magic, overall. But that's not all Oxi Clean does: you can clean mold and mildew stains, clean grout, and use it on rugs and upholstery. OxiClean Fee Versatile Stain Remover $7.99 3.5 oz is my favorite -- it has the same stain fighting ingredients as the original OxiClean but it is free of dyes and fragrances that can irritate sensitive skin. You can also take the power of OxiClean with you on the road, with OxiClean Spray-A-Way Instant Stain Remover $2.99 .47 fl. oz $4.99/2 . Simply spray the stain with the Oxi in the little spray bottle, blot the stain with a paper towel or some tissues, and watch the stain fade from view. It's really that simple and that good. This particular spray product is best on stains like coffee, grape juice, ketchup, tea, chocolate, etc. and it's meant for fresh stains. I'd suggest the regular formula for true cleansing power, but you can still significantly fade an older strain with a few applications. The small, plastic pump bottle makes it a must-have lifesaver for your tote, or travel bag. My husband and I seem to have a knack for dropping foods and liquids on our best clothes...usually the first time we wear them. Apart from covering ourselves in plastic (and then I guess we’d be weird and crazy) I have always wondered how to protect our precious fabrics from our to "spill. Blox In-Wash Clothing Protector for $9.99 per 8 0z. is the first in-wash stain blocker that can help block stains before they start (on any washable fabric). Blox can guard against organic stains and water and oil-based stains as well as red wine, coffee, mustard, red sauce, blood, grass and ink. Important to know (especially if you’re going to treat the "rug rats" clothes with it) is that Blox doesn’t contain any solvents, silicone, PFOA or PFOA, it’s eco friendly and dermatologist tested. The thing that’s so great about this is that you don’t have to paint or spray on a coating as you would with furniture fabric guards. You just add 4 ounces with your fabric softener and wash and dry your clothes as usual. I’m not saying that you should use Blox and then dump food on yourself, but four ounces of "protection" for your pricey white pants, or cotton designer blouse, is really four ounces of prevention against the proverbial pound of cure.
Asian pears look like a cross between an apple and a pear, with more than 100 varieties, mostly grown in Japan. The taste runs the gamut from slightly sweet, to tart. The scent is a sweet fruity with a floral hint of apple blossom, and I think it's a perfect home fragrance. Melange makes a perfectly lovely Bougie (candle) $20.00 in "Asian Pear" scent that burns up to 60 hours, releasing this cheerful fragrance into the room. The pure white candle in a large, clear, round votive, goes with any decor. It has a soy-blend wax for a slow, clean burn and cotton wicks that apparently help provide maximum fragrance output. The candles contain no artificial color pigments or dye. The simple, square label rimmed in plum, and the white cardboard packaging with the same label, makes this a classic gift for a woman or a man. The scents are beautiful, the price, fantastic! Stop up now for the holidays and for your enhancing the atmosphere in your home. PRODUCTS THAT HELP YOU LOOK GOOD & GIVE BACK, TOO:
I have loved LATHER products ever since I discovered them in an ultra-chic hotel a few years ago. Luckily, you don't have to be a jet-setter to enjoy them at home. Founded in 1999, the company has a healthy and holistic approach to skin care, focusing on sourcing natural ingredients and essential oils, as well as drawing upon the benefits of aromatherapy. The company doesn't test their products on animals, nor will we work with labs that conduct animal testing. All of this may be enough to make you want to try LATHER products, but now there's another: Soap opera actress Andrea Evans ("One Life to Live") has teamed with the company to create a Sandalwood Rose Soap $8.00 and a Soap for Hope Gift Set $20.00. The gift set includes two bars of sandalwood rose soap and a natural wood soap dish. $5.00 from the sale of each soap, and $12.00 from the Soap for Hope Gift Set will benefit the breast cancer programs at City Of Hope, a biomedical research and treatment facility for cancer and other life-threatening diseases. LATHER soaps are always a treat. This one is infused with rose petals and sandalwood, producing a sensual, soft spiced scent in a lovely, solid, swirled marbled, soap bar. The soap itself is crafted of emollient olive oil, essential oils, botanicals, and plant extracts. Rose oil, in particular, is good for dry, mature and/or sensitive skin, while sandalwood oil helps soothe and soften. A host of other lovely ingredients add to the sensual pleasure: Cedarwood, clove, geranium, lavender, lemon, nutmeg, orange, vetiver and patchouli. Rosemary extract serves as a natural preservative, and there are actual rose petals and pink mineral pigment infused into the soap to make it really pretty for gift-giving. The results? A soap that smoothes your body, pampers your senses, and helps combat deadly diseases--a must-have for Fall, and get a bunch for stocking stuffers (the holidays will be here before you know it). A WORD ABOUT BRUSHES: Good tools help you achieve the results you want, easily and efficiently. With a little care, they'll last for years and continue to pay you big beauty dividends. A set of good make up brushes is essential for good results. Protect your investment by storing all type of brushes in individualized bags or a communal kit. or upright in an appropriately-sized covered container. This will help ensure that the bristles stay clean, and that they won't crush or bend. Clean both hair and makeup brushes regularly with mild soap, or a specialized product. Don't pull or bend the bristles, but gently massage cleanser through them. For makeup brushes, swirl the brush in circles in the palm of your hand to release dirt, oils, hair, and makeup, then rinse under water until it runs clear. Dry brushes upside down with the bristles facing the floor. Re-shape the bristles only when necessary. Resist the urge to hurry the process by using a blow dryer, that can disrupt or melt the bristles. Take care of your brushes, and they'll take care of you!
Olivia Garden was founded in Belgium by Jean and Cathy Rennette, and has a history of designing and promoting innovative products to meet hairdressers' professional needs. The Olivia Garden Healthy Hair Ionic Vent Paddle Brush $12.50 is a pro-style brush made with an eco-friendly bamboo handle that's actually lighter and stronger than wood (and isn't it nice to know that bamboo is a renewable resource?). The handle looks lovely in stripes of light and medium blonde wood, with a delicate floral design etched onto the back, but the beauty of this brush isn't just the good looks, the lightweight handle and nicely shaped head reduces fatigue when you're blow-drying. Boars bristle helps add shine, while nylon ball-tipped bristles grip hair for easier styling. Both are ion-charged, for an anti-static, anti-bacterial bonus that help you maximize heat and dry hair quickly. Less time with the blow dryer is good news for the health of your hair. The bristles also help keep it shiny and non-frizzy. The large, oval shape is especially good for long and curly or thick hair, and lets you dry it straight. This type of pro-style brush is my favorite. This brush is a real pleasure to use, and the price is nice, too.
Mineral powders are all the rage right now, but in order to make the most of them, it’s a good idea to apply them with brushes that are specially designed to handle mineral makeup. Japonesque make all sorts of professional tools and cases for makeup, and they have a line of anti bacterial, Mineral Makeup Brushes that are non-toxic, non-allergenic, and great for those with sensitive skin. The anti-bacterial treatment of the bristles also helps reduce millions of bacteria that can cause skin irritations and infections, so that's good news for everybody. These small, travel-sized brushes are petit enough to put in a small makeup bag, but they work "big/" with sturdy, beige and black handles. My favorite is the Mineral Face Brush $26.00 with a large head of well-shaped natural hair bristles that make it easy to apply bronzers, powder, powder foundation, and shimmers. You can also use it to soften too much blush, and smooth out any imperfections in your foundation. Another "must-have" in your mineral powder brush collection is a Mineral Blush Brush $28.00. This one has a head of natural bristles that are gently curved to hold the mineral powder and let you either apply it in a more concentrated way, or softly diffuse it. I also liked the Mineral Concealer Brush $19.50 with flat, sharply angled, synthetic bristles in a medium sized head, that lets you apply makeup into hard to reach corners like the crevices around your nose, and the flat side lets you blend liquid or cream color, smoothly. For eyes, a 'must-have" is the All Over Shadow Brush $18.00 with natural hair is a multi-purpose, makeup bag pal for applying a sheer wash of color to your lids, crease, and brow bone, for shading and blending with loose or pressed mineral powder, or for packing on a bit more color for more drama. he Mineral Smudger & Detailer Brush $15.00 has a compact, low, flat, domed head of natural hair bristles that make it easy to add color in the eye crease, the outer corner of the eye, along the lash line, and as a smudger to soften lines and blend out color. Even if you're not into mineral makeup, these brushes are economical as they help the color cling to the brush, so you use less product, saving you money and making your face look, fabulous!
JUST FOR THE GUYS:
King of Shaves is a British shaving and skin care and grooming bran, founded by Will in 1993 to sell the company’s first product: AlphaOil Original Shaving Oil $5.99.5 fl.oz. He hand-filled the first 9,600 bottles in his kitchen! The helps ease the irritation and rash you can get when shaving. He discovered that his formula oil gave him a close shave, but without the negative side effects. The Shaving Oil is good for sensitive skin and especially if you use an electric razor. It has soothing aloe, tea tree oil and Vitamin E, among other good-for-your skin ingredients. This little bottle is economical (you get up to 100 shaves from one bottle) and our male reviewers, despite their initial trepidation about using an “oil,” loved the cooling formula. This oil works best with electric razors, and I noticed on another site that guys were saying how great it is for shaving their heads (a trend I wish would go away, but I think it's here to stay). We also gave it five stars as a must-have for travel, since it’s smaller than a pack of gum! For guys who prefer a gel shave, the AlphaGel Shaving Gel Cooling $5.99 5.9 fl. oz is a cooling, invigorating shave gel with the same soothing oils and ingredients as the shaving oil. However, this gel formula has microcapsules that are suspended in the gel, so when the product is massaged into the skin, the microcapsules break open to deliver more lubrication and protect skin from the irritations of wet shaving. Even our “soap” loving guys loved this one--and fought for the "leftovers."
Mélange (from the French) means: "to blend or mix." Mélange Apothecary's boutique in Woodland Hills, California, allows patrons to custom-fragrance their own products, such as: Eau de Parfum, Home Ambiance Diffuser, Body Creme, Body Lotion (2 formulas), Bath and Shower (4 formulas), Bath Salts, Body Oil or Sugar Scrub with Honey and Shea Butter. If you're not in the neighborhood, however, you can still purchase their wonderful, custom blended products online. I love to take scent with me but I'm always worried about spillage. The Mélange Concrete Perfume $10.00 7 ml. is an easy and inexpensive way to wear and tote your signature scent. The little, lipgloss-y screw-top jar pops into the smallest pocketbook. There are several fruit and floral scents, blended in small batches using pure Beeswax, Jojoba oil and fragrance oils. I liked Mandarine & Orchid, a fruity Tea-centric fragrance that is light and green, featuring mandarin and orchid, of course, plus jasmine and rose de mai. There's also Mandarin & Green Tea, and five other fruity and floral scents to choose from. Also portable although not in solid form is Mélange Eau de Parfum Concetrate $18.00 .35 fl. oz. I love the rollerball format that is still small enough to bring on an airplane and tote in your makeup bag. There are literally dozens of fruit and florals scents (or custom blending) to choose from. We tried "Bois de Tek," ("Teakwood") in English. It's an assertive, unisex-but- slightly-masculine, invigorating scent. I couldn't find out exactly what's in it, but I'd guess the spicy feel is sandalwood, patchouli, and other "out" and incense-y notes. There's a smoky drydown that's downright sexy on both men and women. Other will ask what you're wearing!
U by Ungaro for Him $28.00 2.5 fl. oz.,by Avon has a completely different feel from the "Hers" companion scent. *to read about Ungaro for Her, scroll to the "Fabulous Fragrances" Section of this What Works Column. His scent is pure "designer" magic: Clean and fresh, with just a hint of woods and spice, thanks to bottom notes of natural vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood, tonka bean, and Peru balsam. The fragrance’s top notes are uplifting; green mandarin leaf, ruby red grapefruit, and pomegranate, with a heart of natural immortale, cardamom and cedar Leaf. The effect is exciting and modern, sophisticated, with just a hint of sexy-yet- familiar. It’s a perfect scent for a man of any generation who wants to smell good, but doesn’t want to appear “fussy.
Several years ago the Advice Sisters reviewed some products from Comfort Zone, an upscale, Italian line of skincare products with a collection just for men: Man Space. You can get these in select spas, and they’re also featured in places where guys really demand luxury, such posh hotels and spas around the world. Our male reviewers liked the unfussy, masculine, olive-green packaging, the matte, pewter plastic bottles with man-sized pump tops, and the refreshing, lemony scented products. Read the Entire Review on the Advice Sisters Blog. If you’ve ever wondered what a super-sexy superstar like David Beckham would smell like, maybe it's like his latest fragrance: Signature for HIM Eau de Toilette Spray: $50.00 1.7 fl. 0z; $60.00 2.5 fl. oz (also after shave lotion, hair and body wash, deodorant spray, and deodorant stick). It’s fresh, light, somewhat invigorating and of course, manly, but the scent is unique. It's nicely balanced (as is his wife Victoria’s scent *see Fantastic Fragrances section above for a review of Signature for Her). It isn't an "elderly" scent, but it's not for teens, either. Signature For Him is classified is a woody oriental fragrance with seductive undertones. Designed by Beatrice Piquet from IFF, the top notes are fresh: Marine, Mandarin, Watermelon, with a heart of spice thanks to Living Lantana, Cypress, Juniper Berry. The sensual drydown is created with luxury moss. The bottle is simple, masculine, and chic-- a glass flacon and metal cap looks rugged but fashionable, and the transparent glass allows the lilac liquid inside to shine through. A distinctive weave pattern embossed on the bottle's reverse is a nice touch--to be touched! The silver plaque bearing the Beckham crest id both elegant, and a bit pretentious. Beckham fans, collectors, and scent lovers will want to have this one ASAP. *see the review of Signature for HER in the “Fabulous Fragrances” section of this column. Avon has done a wonderful job of attracting hot, fashion designers to create sensational scents, exclusive and exciting, but still within the budgets of the average man or woman. The latest of Avon's “his and hers” scents are from Emanuel Ungaro, a man whose name is synonymous with high fashion. Ungaro for Her $32.00 1.7 fl. Oz and U by Ungaro for Him $28.00 2.5 fl. oz., beautifully reflect the differences between the sexes, while complimenting each other. Ungaro for Her arrives in a hot pink metallic box subtly embossed with the Ungaro logo of conjoined “U’s”. The clear, glass bottle inside is a graceful nod to the contours of a woman’s body, topped with a simple, clear cap. Ungaro for Him arrives in a slate gray box with embossed Ungaro logo. Inside is an assertive, rounded rectangle of smoked glass, topped with a simple, smoked plastic top. Both bottles bear a single “U” (hers in silver, his in gray)-- a simple, designer touch. *for the men’s fragrance, please scroll down to the “For the Guys” section of this column. Ungaro for Her has a light pink tint merely hints at it’s femininity created with florals and woods. The top notes are bergamot blossom, wet freesia, and pepper blossom, with a heart of acacia aura, living lotus flower, and osmanthus. The finish has one of my favorite notes: orris, plus creamy sandalwood and clean musk. The fragrance feels spicy, but with the surprise of the florals shining through on drydown.. It’s neither too heavy, nor too insignificant–and quite feminine without being old fashioned. This will be a new favorite for 20 to 40-something woman who wants to show a feminine side, but not be distracting at work. *to read about U by Ungaro for Him scroll to the "Just For the Guys" Section of this What Works Column. Ed Hardy has turned tattoo art into high fashion not just with clothing, but with “his and her” fragrances. *to see the review of Ed Hardy For Women scroll to the Fabulous Fragrances Section of this column. The Ed Hardy For Men 55 1.7 oz , $75 3.4 oz. fragrance was designed by Olivier Gillotin of Givaudan. It's a masculine, woody floral that that reminds me of worn leather with a bit of spice (clary sage is what's really in it, I believe). The fragrance starts with top notes of citrus and bergamot, so it could be fruity and bright, but the middle note is very unusual--a true "star" in any scent. It's 'Thuja," that is actually one of the ingredients in the once-banned liquor, Absinthe –how appropriate and a bit daring, even for a tattoo inspired scent! There is also amber, redwood and musk. Our male reviewers liked the overall vibe, but agreed that anyone over a certain age probably won't pick it as a first choice--and isn’t that the point?

FALL HAIR HELPERS:
I had the privilege to talk to the charming Laurent D (Dufourg) of the Priv é Salon, backstage at the Ports 1961 Fall Runway Show in Bryant Park. I knew he was a fave of the likes (and locks) of Uma Thurman, Teri Hatcher, and Debra Messing, but I didn't know much about Privé products. I was enlightened, and since then the Advice Sisters have reviewed quite a few of them in the What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column (see archives). Now there's a new, multi-tasking product I'm loving. It's a Thermal Protection Detangling Spray $19.00 6 fl. oz. from the Privé Formule Aux Herbes collection. What's great about the product is that it not only helps to detangle and condition hair, but it also protects against the damage caused by heat styling tools. Now that it's Fall, beach hair is out, and smooth, sleek styles and lots of curls, are in, so you're probably using more heat, more often. The lightweight liquid comes in a simple, clear plastic pump bottle, nice looking for bathroom or dressing table. The product has some "green" ingredients that help enhance the product: bamboo (to strengthen and fortify your hair); kelp (for moisture) and cactus to help grow it thick and strong. There's also the bonus of immediate softness and shine. Stylists will use it to actually help cut hair, but you'll use it at home, to deep condition, style and protect with one spritz of the bottle. It's a lovely product, a "must-have" treat, and a little something that works hard for your hair, and makes styling easier for you.Do you have trouble growing long, healthy hair? Do you sometimes get so frustrated you think about cutting it all off or wearing a wig? I was pleasantly surprised by some amazingly affordable products to help hair grow: Beautiful Lengths by Pantene (they also sponsor a charitable program of the same name you may want to consider, that helps provide wigs for women who had suffered hair loss due to chemotherapy). The Beautiful Lengths Shampoo $3.99 12.6 fl. oz and Beautiful Lengths Conditioner $3.99 12.6 fl. oz (there's a combo version shampoo and condition too) come in pearly white plastic bottles with lilac flip tops. The pearly products within have a light, fresh scent, and contain "Aquacurrent Science" that helps make hair ten times stronger against damage so hair can grow longer and stronger. These products also help prevent breakage from styling, by regulating the flow of water (e.g. humidity) in and out of the hair. The shampoo's key helpers include surfactants that gently clean hair to help remove residue and build-up, while polymer and silicone block humidity to reduce frizz, and silicone also helps create smooth, healthy hair with fewer tangles, split ends and less breakage. The conditioner has ingredients that form a gel network throughout your hair to help strengthen it against damage and effectively condition it. The end results of these two products, much to my surprise, was simple: clean, shiny, bouncy, healthy-looking hair without any bells and whistles. With regular use of these products you might make your flowing tresses dreams come true! Even better, a portion of the proceeds of the sale of these products goes to support the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program charitable program. Pantene has partnered with the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) on Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a campaign that encourages people to grow, cut and donate their hair to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program that creates free, real-hair wigs for women who've lost their hair due to cancer. In addition, Pantene has donated more than one million dollars to the EIF's Women's Cancer Research Fund, a program committed to saving lives by raising funds and awareness for millions of women and their families affected by cancer. So when you've grown your hair and you are ready for a new style, like Actress Hilary Swank did on Oprah, consider donating your ponytail to this worthy cause. It takes at least six ponytails to make a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig! A bad hair day is an inconvenience, but a no-hair day is another story. A recent study revealed that nearly 60% of women consider hair loss the most dreaded side effect of chemotherapy, and 8% of these women are at risk of avoiding potentially life-saving treatment because they do not want to look bald. Real hair wigs can cost upwards of $1200 and are often only partially covered by health insurance. Go to Make the Cut to find out how you can donate your hair. Celebrities who love wavy styles such as Alicia Keyes, Eva Mendes, Jessica Simpson, and Lauren Conrad (just to name a few) rely on hair care products that enhance their curls and help banish frizz, flyways and flatness that can totally ruin their styles. Big Waves Shampoo and Conditioner $5.99/each by Charles Worthington helps hair with natural texture and curl to look it’s best. The cheerful, red bottles with unique, square, flip-tops, made us feel like stars even before we poured out the fresh smelling products. The shampoo offered luxe lather (lots of it) and washed out cleanly, leaving even our wet hair with a soft and silky finish. The conditioner was equally pampering and silky. But the real test was after we blow-dried our hair. While I’m generally dubious that something you wash out will really help enhance curls, my honest report is that the shampoo and conditioners absolutely did help tame frizz and flyaways, even in humid weather, and made our usual tug-of-war with the blow dryer and brush, much easier. The result was bouncy, healthy, wavy hair that looked nice, not out of control. Even if your hair isn’t all that wavy, the products are nice to use! Pureology makes effective and luxurious hair care products, but if your scalp is itchy and you suffer from dandruff, you need a product that will treat the problem. And if you color your hair as well, finding an anti-fade dandruff shampoo could be as difficult as finding the perfect little black dress. Fortunately, Pureology makes DandruffScalpCure Shampoo $35.00 10.1 fl. oz and Conditioner $35.00 8.5 fl. oz. These tough on dandruff but gentle on your hair color products together deliver a dose of 2% Pyrithione Zinc, which helps to fight the symptoms of dandruff, and prevent it's recurrence (if you use it regularly). Rich lather that won't strip your color washes out quickly and cleanly, while antioxidant bennies from certified organic botanicals such as green tea, burdock root and a blend of mushrooms, meld with a soft, vanilla-y scent of rose, plumeria, amber and vanilla to pamper as well as protect. The product's AntiFadeComplex has UVA/UVB filters to help protect your color against fading. The products are so pleasant to use, you'll forget that they're for dandruff control! Reviewers loved these products, and reported soft, shiny, healthy-looking hair (and fewer flakes) after just a wash or two. If you want to use products that don't allow animal testing, the 100% vegan formula will seal the deal! Ouidad Botanical Boost Spray-in Conditioner $16.00 8 fl. oz. is a clear, lightly scented liquid leave-in conditioner that won Allure Magazine's "Best Conditioner, Editor's Choice Award" in 2001. While it' s not a brand-new product, we are impressed with the results curlyheads (and non) get with this easy to use product that seals in moisture nourishes hair. Curly hair is especially prone to frizziness and dryness. This lightweight conditioner features aloe barbadensis leaf juice, which has been used medicinally for over 3,000 years. It's chock full of nourishing vitamins, minerals, enzymes and essential amino acids, bringing manageability and super-hydration to your hair. Ouidad products are not tested on animals, by the way. Another reason to love them. Give your wet or dry hair an instant treatment any time of day or evening, especially great after the gym, or at the beach. There are no oils or waxes to weigh down your hair, and broad-spectrum sunscreens defend and protect hair from the sun's damaging rays. You'll also treat your strands to increased flexibility and elasticity , and that helps reduce breakage. Although Ouidad products are beloved by people with real curls, this product works well for any kind of hair. It is easy to use, and shows immediate results.
As a beauty reviewer with an up-close-and-personal format, I try everything I write about. I have tons of thick, wavy hair that hardly ever goes limp. So when I received Lamas Beauty International Rice Protein Volumizing Shampoo$16.00 12 oz. and Rice Protein Volumizing Conditioner $16.00 12 oz I wasn’t anxious to volumize my hair. But there wasn’t anyone immediately available to test the product, so I tried this duo wondering what it would be like. I’ll start at the finish line: This product will do wonders for fine, limp hair, but it will make any hair look shiny, smooth, bouncy, and healthy. I really loved it! Rice protein is the star in these hair products. Apparently is a natural thickening and volumizing extract that infuses thin, weak, lifeless hair with new body and volume. The rice protein is also fortified with Golden Seal, Carrot Seed, Chamomile and Yucca botanicals (for their protective properties) and makes hair soft, shiny and touch-able with a nice dose of aloe and avocado. Other botanicals detangle, prevent split ends and flyaways, The shampoo and conditioner did an amazing job of making hair look and feel great, and if I can make a judgment from my own hair, it did increase volume–but not in a wild or crazy way. My hair looked more bouncy and lively, but pretty and controllable, making it just look much better. The conditioner features all of the above. All Lamas products are vegan, and paraben free . I was captivated by the bright, fresh scent and the luxe, pearly products that felt luxuriously pampering, but washed out cleanly. These are a real treat. Does the world need another shine product? Sure, if it's one that is easy to use, effective, and affordable. Garnier Fructis Style Brilliantine Shine Glistening Drops $3.99 2 fl. oz. fits all three requirements. Just a couple of drops or just one, of this slightly fruity-scented serum, dispensed from the pump/dropper, pre-measured top, adds instant, glistening shine (yes, really the right word) and some added control against frizz. I like the fact that it is a lightweight product and you can use it either on damp hair to help with detangling, or on dry hair. There's not much more to say about the fine product. It isn't glamorous and it isn't a new concept, but it works well, it's inexpensive, and it's easy This makes it a "must-have" no-brainer! Get at least one for home and one for your tote bag -you can use it for more shine and control, any time!
NEW FOR HANDS, FEET AND NAILS:
What’s fantastic for Fall Nails? Chanel’s Le Vernis Nail Color $20.00 in #481 "Fantastic." This shiny, opaque, rich, velvety raspberry shot with gold shimmer satisfies all the trendy-ness of Fall’s deeper color, but manages to sidestep the Goth look by being rewarding intense in tone, rather than gratuitously dark. The elegant polish slides on easily and lasts without chipping for days–an important feature when you’re dealing with deeper colors. From this season’s greys to it’s neutrals, this color will look equally good on finger and toes, and will be a holiday and special event favorite well through the Winter (think black and burgundy velvet, gold lame, chic Chanel tweed suits). TIP: this polish looks particularly coordinated with Chanel’s Creme Lipstick $27.00 in "Fantastic Plum." One of the great things about nail polish is that it makes an immediate statement that sends the message: “I can be trendy, or I can be classic.” Sally Hansen’s latest color collection for Fall is a collaboration with popular designer, Tracy Reese. For five seasons, Sally Hansen has partnered with the designer to create shades for the Tracy Reese runway show. Now you can get the Nail Polish $6.00 and be ahead of the curve withy a collection of 10, limited edition colors that let you look trendy and classic. The collection features three light neutrals (beiges, nudes and tans are hot this season): “Quartz Chameleon,” (sheer flesh); “Divinity” (sheer, iridescent beige) and “Moonstone,” (luminous, sheer silver), four top trendy darks: “Alchemy,” (deep, shimmery plum), “Ravens Wing” (sheer, shimmery charcoal), “Stormy Blue” (shimmery sea blue) and “The Good Earth,” (shimmery chocolate). Deep reds are also hot this season. Four in this collection include: “Cruel Heart,” (rich, metallic-y wine), “Night Lily” (raspberry) and “Torrid Bloom” (hot fuchsia). Sally Hansen polishes look and wear like the pricier ones. They last without chipping or fading (really important when you’re wearing dark colors), thanks to a natural mineral complex and epoxy resin that help the color bond to your nail. Silicone to lets the polish flow smoothly for easy application. The polishes also have good for your nails ingredients such as keratin to strengthen and marine botanicals. TIP: Tracy Reese advises: “A touch of color to your nails gives you a total polished look, as it creates a complete package from heat to toe.”
I've always found Italian wines to be mysterious...and delicious. Now Borghese has created the Wines of Tuscany Fall Nail Polish $8.00 collection inspired by the wines of Tuscany. Naturally, the collection features rich reds, purples and plums, which luckily, are the colors most wanted this Fall, too. My favorite is the universally flattering, medium bright "Rosato Rose," a dark rose pink creme. For those who can't get enough of the deep, dark colors, deep, dark "Brunello Grape" gives you a plum so dark, it's just one shade off "blackened." There's also Vin Santo Rasin (a brown/purple frost); "Vine Nobile Berry (medium/dark berry creme); "Pomino Plum" (purple frost) and "Vini Violet" (dark lavender/light purple creme). What's really distinctive about these beautiful nail polishes is the polish itself, a quick drying formula that applies almost perfectly in one swipe, with a special, duale curve tip brush that gets the entire nail covered perfectly. The polish is free of DBP's, Toluene and formaldehyde. You don't have to go to Italy for these gorgeous colors, just to your local drug store! The top of my N.Y.C. Color Metallic Nail Paint $2.99 refused to stay fused to the brush, but the super-shimmery, metallic polish in "Molten Metal" wowed me, anyway. The mauve-ish grayed, nearly glittery finish it gave me nails was so unique, people stopped and asked what I was wearing. Little did they know it was under 3.00 a bottle! Two coats of this light-reflecting polish gives you the most up-to-the-minute of nail looks, instantly. It's a quick pick-me-up and a really easy way to update your look, if finances are challenging right now. Not sure whether to go pale or bold in nail color this Fall? Creative Nail Design (CND), the polish of the runways, covers both! I was fortunate to be behind the scenes at a number of shows last fall to get a first-hand look at what's new for nails, now. Creative Nail Design is calling their Fall/Winter Nail Collection "Neutrals of the Night." and while many of the shades are dark and metallic, mirroring the blackened plums, greys, and berries of last Fall, there are also some lighter, easier to wear color such as "Serenity," an elegant, understated, ladylike, shiny, satin sheer nude was an easy favorite on 14 runways, including (shown at BCBG, J. Mendl, and TIBI just to name a few). Ditto the delightful "Crowned," a shimmery golden honey (shown at Ashley Isham) that was made even more modern worn as a French Manicure with black tips substituting for white at Jasmine di Milo. A rich, deep, velvety plum with just a hint of shimmer aptly named: "Deep Velvet and an even deeper, super-shiny, blackened raisin called "Nail Noir" " festooned nails at Vivienne Tam, Milly, Luca Luca, and Willow (just to name a few). One of my personal favorites for Fall is "Burgundy Foil" a super- shimmery berry that is one of the prettiest new nail colors I’ve seen in a long while and "Baroque," a shiny claret. Both debuted on fingertips of models at Bill Blass, Badgley Mischka, and Carolina Hererra Grey polish can be hard to wear, but "Hyde in the Dark," is a metallic charcoal that’s modern and pretty, especially on toes peeking through silvery or black patent sandals. This color was seen at Louis Vuitton. "Nordic Grey" is a lighter take on grey, worn at Costello Taglipietra. For those who just can’t get enough blackened colors, "Voodoo," a true black, was used for Baby Phat (where faux blackened nails with Swarovski crystals, shone as well). No matter what shade you choose, your nails will be trendy! TIP: Smoky shades are in this Fall. Custom blend your own for the nail looks that walked down the runway at Costello Tagliapietra and Catherine Malandrino. For the grey at Costello Tagliapietra: Start with a 1/4 bottle of CND’s Retro White. Add 22 drops of Black Platinum plus 10 drops of Voodoo, and 8 drops of Hot Pop Blue --- For the heather grey nails at Catherine Malandrino: take ½ bottle of Nordic Grey and blend with a half bottle of G’Listen. –easy! Seal in the shine with CND’s Super Shiney High Gloss Top Coat.Nail polish makes your entire look, more posh, but your nails have to be in good condition to wear the deeper colors Fall always favors. 5 Second Nail Products, the same that are faves of many professional manicurists, has at-home solutions. Just swipe two coats over your nails and let the fast-drying formula with "Shine Shield" lock in moisture, help strengthen, d also add a natural but lustrous finish. You can use this one as a base coat for polish so it multi-tasks. There are other "pens" to help groom nails and make them look better, longer, and stronger. These are so clean and easy and portable, you’ll wish all your treatment products could be this easy and fast. We love Essie Nail Polish $8.00. Their collections are trendy but wearable, always with a "theme" featuring cute Nail Polish names you will remember when you go to your favorite nail salon. For Fall, Essie brings us a half-dozen bold brights in a jewel-toned collection of blue-based "cool" reds, berries, plumps and purples. All of these are deep, but not gaudy or "goth." Choose a classic, clear, bold, sexy red such as "Forever Young," or indulge your desire for glam nails with a deeper but hardly shy, red currant with a hint of hot pink, called "Tomboy No More." For those who are not fans of red, but like pink, there's a pretty, dusky rose called "Swept Off My Feet." It's deeper and more intense than the light and girly roses of Summer, but hardly a faded rose, either. If you can't bear to give up the bright and hot colors of Summer, "Big Spender" is a bold, seriously blue based, clear red/violet. It's Fall's substitute for hot pink and fuchsia. Party Girls will love "No Boundaries," a bold stain of plum that is clear, bright, blue-based, and really festive, but easy to wear since it's not blackened. Whether you're coloring fingers, or toes, any or all of these will look right with runway-ready fashion--it's the easiest way to update your look and not spend a fortune.
