BEAUTY GIFTS FOR MOM (FOR YOU, TOO):
Give mom roses for her special day. Not the traditional bouquet of flowers...the Wild Rose Facial Care Kit $14.99 ($22.00 value) from Welda. It features four, rose-scented, .35 fl. oz. travel-sized products to combat prematurely aging skin. You get a Cleansing Lotion to gently cleanse skin without drying it out, and with the lovely scent of wild roses; plus a Facial Toner to purify skin even more; a Moisture Cream to protect skin from dryness, and a Night Cream to moisturize and help rebuild the outer layer of skin, while you sleep. Since 1921, Weleda has been creating products that have Biodynamic and organic ingredients. This kit features rosehip seed oil. It has Vitamin A, which helps to delay the effects of skin aging, assists with cell regeneration, and promotes collagen and encourages elastin level to increase. FYI, it's extracted from the seeds of a native rose plant which grows wild in Chile. It's a perfectly lovely and exotic way to say "I love you" to Mom, or treat yourself to some gentle pampering. This kit comes in a 100% recycled box with certified, renewable energy, too! It may seem a bit strange to suggest buying a sun screen for someone as a gift, but the new, limited edition luxury sized UV Plus Day Screen SPF 40 by Clarins $56.001.7 fl. oz. is truly an exceptional and luxurious product. This special sun screen with UVA/UVB protection is so light that you won't remember you applied it, but the significant SPF has titanium dioxide, a micronized and microdispersed 100% mineral screen great for even the most sensitive skin, plant polymers that keep the product feeling light and matte, and something called "Expertise 3P Complex" to protect skin from free radicals, urban pollution, and electromagnetic radiation (white tea, succory dock-cress, thermus thermophilus, rhodiola rosea and glycofilm). Everyone should wear SPF protection, but many people don't want to be bothered, or just dislike the smell and the feel of it. Get Mom this high-end sunscreen packaged with a cute sun hat and show how much you love her. Giving a unique gift for Mother's Day is a great idea, but saving her skin? That's priceless! The Sunlit
Bronze Beauty Kit $35.00 by Elizabeth Arden is
Summer-in-a-box, personified! The gorgeous, coppery
metallic, faux leather compact with magnetic clasp opens up to a wide view
mirror, and six shades of Elizabeth Arden Bronze Minerals in
sunlit color, for eyes and cheeks. You get four nicely
intense but blendable, limited edition eyeshadow shades (Beech Nut (deep
matte brown), Coral Sands (shimmery copper), Sand Dollar (matte flesh)
and Lagoon (deep. shimmery teal). There's also a generous
rectangle of One of the things I've always disliked about traveling is having to use unfamiliar products on my skin and hair. I admit, I love the cute, little bottles, but when I am using products at home in a routine that is working, I don't want to stray from it. When it comes to hair, Cutler has a Carry On Selection $22.00 featuring five favorite must-haves packaged in sleek, plastic, flip-top bottles and housed in a re-useable, "zip-lock" style carry-on bag. The collection includes the gentle and effective Daily Shampoo 1.7 oz and Daily Conditioner 1.7 oz, and three new products: a Body Wash 1.7 oz and a Body Milk 1.7 oz featuring antioxidant, moisturizing, fruit and floral extracts and a fresh, uplifting scent, plus a 1.5 oz blue, Facial Cleansing Bar that gently cleanses and refreshes your skin. This is not just a great set to take away for a weekend or for a business trip, it's a nice gift for Mom, and for those wedding showers that are right around the corner.
FOR THE GUYS (and especially for Father's Day):
The Sniff 'n Go Aromapod $9.98 isn't really just for men, but I think the unique, travel-friendly inhaler that can change his mood, or recharge his energy level, will really appeal to guys who love gadgets. This slim, slide-open/shut plastic pack is tiny, but when you slide the cover open it exposes two small rows of vents that deliver one of six different essential oils directly to your nose. Inhale deeply 3-5 times, close the cover, and feel the difference! This is truly portable aromatherapy, to use whenever and wherever you want. East packet lasts for 1-2 months of average use. Read the whole review on the Advice Sisters Blog New York men have a certain power. It comes, perhaps, from being in a City that never sleeps and that is populated with some of the most iconic structures in the world such as the Chrysler and Empire State buildings, or, perhaps, Philippe Starck’s modern masterpieces. Designer Donna Karan has always been fascinated with the Urban infrastructure. DKNY the fragrance for Men, for example, mimics the clean lines of urban skyscrapers. The newest and really terrific scent of DKNYMEN Eau de Toilette Spray $65.00 3.4 oz. And $35.00 1.7 fl. oz. shows another facet of the urban man. This scent comes in a modern, angular, grey-tinted bottle reminiscent of Manhattan’s Flat Iron Building (although the silvery metallic outer packaging features a screened black and white photo of the Empire State Building). The lines are sleek, smooth, bold and strong, in a sharp, diamond-shaped profile. A very impressive, pewter and silver textured cap feels like it could be hardware from the engine of an expensive sports car. The modern, masculine scent is quite exciting. It starts out with a bit of bergamot and mandarin to get his motor racing, followed by fresh, fragrant notes of juniper and clary sage. White pepper and cardamom, plus lavender, violet leaves, and wet jasmine, add spice and floral elements. These, combined with a bottom of sandalwood, cedarwood, patchouli, Vetyver and orris (my favorite note) gives it that sexy, manly scent women can’t resist. The scent was designed to appeal to a "downtown man" who has style and class and who wants an expensive-smelling but still modern scent. Like the City itself, DKNYMEN Eau de Toilette has classic elements and quirky ones. It smells exciting, delicious and definitely not for the ladies, but I couldn’t help but spray some on myself, anyway because my male reviewer was sure to take the bottle and run! An After Shave Gel $44.00 and Body Wash $23.00, packaged in sleek, granite-colored tubes, are a modest way to layer the scent. Despite having exactly the same name as a DKNY fragrance launched in 2000 the scent is completely new. Perfumers Alberto Morillas and Harry Fremont from Firmenich have outdone themselves creating a beautiful scent for savvy men that will never grow stale. A "Chypre" is Chypre is a name used to describe a category of scent, usually with a top note of citrus and woody base notes derived from oak moss and ambergris, and often, sandalwood. It's spicy, and sexy. That's only one of the reasons I really love Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme Eau de Toilette Spray, $55.00 1.7 fl. oz.; $70.00 3.0 fl. oz. $70.00 *body and shave products also available. This fragrance is elegant, luxurious, masculine and modern. It's the first male fragrance entirely designed by Creative Director Frida Giannini as a new signature for the iconic Gucci man. The steel grey cardboard box with silver accents looks strong and yet, fancy, with the iconic Gucci crossed "Gs" logo pattern on the inside of the box. The bottle is also quite a show-stopper: a substantial chunk of grey tinted glass that reminds me of a modern skyscraper, festooned with a super-shiny, large, "horse-bit" topper modernized, and featuring the "Gucci" name engraved in the top. The fragrance itself is the kind you want to lean in closer and smell some more with exotic notes such as cypress and calone. Top notes include florals such as violet and bergamot with a manly heart of warm incense and a leathery accord, tobacco notes, amber, and black pepper. The base is deep and heady, with strong, woody notes of patchouli, cedarwood and amyris. The scent is fresh, crisp, herbal and spicy. The best word I can use to describe it is "mmmmmmm!" The "Iconic Gucci Man" sure smells great! Sometimes you don't want to smell like a fruit, a nut, or a bouquet of flowers, you just want a fresh, delicate scent that feels clean and pleasing. That's why I like the new, Butterfly Flower from Bath & Body Works. The showpiece of the collection is the Eau de Toilette $19.50 2.5 fl. oz. in a really pretty, Limited Edition , pink-tinted, slim, square glass bottle etched with a butterfly and capped with a clear, faceted, lucite topper that reminds me of a crystal stopper. You can also get a solid perfume $10.50 and a variety of other home and body items none over $15.00. The scent has top notes of black tea, tangerine, cyclamen, and banana leaf. It's heart is maxillania tenufolia orchid, asia syringa flower, and french mimosa, with a drydown of creamy coconut milk and musk. The first impression I get of this is lily of the valley or orange blossom, even though they're not in the fragrance. I can only sense the bottom notes, so they don't overpower. This makes the scent feminine but perfect for warmer weather. I can even see a younger girl wearing this without being over-the-top. The Shower Gel in a curvy, plastic bottle with silver and clear flip top is just $10.50. Couple it with the fragrance and you've got a great gift for a mom, a bride to be, or a new graduate. Dolce & Gabbana The One scent for women is beautiful, with a gourmand-like, creamy, delicious vibe. But Dolce & Gabbana The One for Men has a completely different feel. Designed by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, this scent is sweet and spicy, classic and modern. The first sniff for me personally, brought me a recollection of that excitement you feel when you are in a high end restaurant and you get an initial whiff of a delicious meal. It is classified as "a spicy, oriental perfume, developed on the harmony of tobacco with refined boisé notes (if I researched correctly, boisé refers to oak barrels used to age wine). You might think the scent is very spicy and heavy, but it's surprisingly note. The top has bright notes of grapefruit, coriander and basil shine through the heart and bottom notes. The heart is spicy but doesn't overpower: cardamom, ginger and orange blossom, while the sensual, masculine bottom notes are cedar wood, ambergris, and tobacco. The presentation is also modern but classic. The box is an unadorned deep bronze with metallic silver letters, and the bottle is a substantial, clear chunk of square glass with an inner core showcasing the amber-tinted juice and unadorned other than the name D&G The One on the very bottom in assertive bronze letters. The bottle is topped with a simple, modern, sleek-but-powerful, rectangular, brushed bronze cap. Who better than the sexy and vibrant Matthew McConaughey to be the face of this fantastic fragrance? The One for Men also is available in two aftershave versions (balm and lotion), a shower gel, and stick deodorant. Some men are still stone-age hold-outs against any type of special treatment for their skin. You can tell you they are, because their skin generally looks not that great, giving them a look older than their real years. So for Father's Day, initiate your special man into the world of effective, easy skin care, with two new products that will make him a believer: ClarinsMen Line Control Eye Balm $35.00 0.7 fl. oz. and Line Control Balm $52.00 1.7 fl. oz. Both are from the Clarins Anti-Wrinkle and Firming System, featuring products designed to minimize the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles near the eyes, between the brows, and to help reduce the formation of a double-chin and heavy jaw line (jowls). Both products have shea butter to nourish and moisturize, and paracress (a plant from Madagascar) to help reduce wrinkles, and strengthen and firm skin. The Control Eye Balm also features maritime pine extract (reduces dark circles), oat sugars (to smooth, tighten and brighten tired eyes) and purslane extract to soothe and comfort skin. The product, in a small, blue pump bottle with silver, white and red accents, has a light, almost imperceptible scent, and feels really cool and light on the skin. The Line Control Balm is similarly packaged and pleasant, but it also has caffeine to help slow that double-chin, Bison grass, to help promote blood circulation, and Clarin's own, patented ingredient called "Expertise 3p Complex" that helps protect from environmental aggressors. Male reviewers said they felt the product working, and that's an instant plus for men who want to see, not just believe.

When I think of Sean "Diddy" Combs, I think of a rapper and media mogul before I think of fragrance. But Sean Combs is not only a savvy businessman, he's a fashionista. His scent Unforgivable for Men won the Fragrance of The Year in the Men's Luxe category At the 35th Annual FiFi Awards hosted by The Fragrance Foundation. I haven't sampled this scent in a long while, but I remember it as being spicy and yet clean, with notes of Sicilian lemon, Italian bergamot, Moroccan tangerine, grapefruit and juniper. For father's day, you can give your unforgettable man, an Unforgivable Fathers Day Gift Set $75.00 including an aftershave balm, shower gel, and fragrance, packaged in a sleek-as-a-luxury-high-rise, rectangular, black box. Your special man or dad will be very pleasantly surprised. Surprise him with the scent, then hit the town, Diddy style!Brut has been a beloved fragrance for men for decades. But younger and more modern men crave an affordable scent that is all their own. A young dad or grad is going to adore the new, Brut Revolution Cologne $19.99 2.5 oz., $9.99 1.3 oz., After Shave $14.99 2.5 fl. oz. It's an inexpensive and new take on the original Brut, and other market fragrance favorites. The clear, curved, glass bottle has a bottom that looks blue you hold it upright, but clear when you hold it on it’s side. Silver accents and a matte silver top over the spray diffuser are simple and trendy. The scent is light, fresh and masculine, but it doesn't have the type of herbal or woodsy tones that characterize many traditional men's fragrance. It's not so intrusive a man might be reluctant to wear it to work, and it makes a nice first scent. The features top notes of citrus and cypress, plus an aqueous mist mixed with black pepper and patchouli, and manly bottom notes of musk and earthy moss. It an easy to wear, generation-spanning scent that guys will go for. The After Shave has lighter levels of scent, along with ingredients that close his pores after shaving without drying his skin. If you’re strapped for cash but want to wear, or give, something new, you can’t go wrong with Brut Revolution. I think it's destined to become a new, modern classic.

Give the king of your castle a smoother, more pleasant shaving experience with an inexpensive but effective product: King of Shaves Kinexium Shave Gel $6.99 5.9 fl. oz. The newest are for Sensitive Skin and Cooling Menthol versions. They are in clear plastic flip-top tubes with blue and metallic silver accents. A feature is a dual delivery system. Suspended in the gels are microcapsules that contain nourishing oils. When the lather gel is massaged into the skin, they break up to provide good lubrication. There are also “micro-magnetically enhanced particles that help the gel “stick” to the blade throughout the shave, while a high dose of aloe vera, tea tree, spearmint, eucalyptus and camphor oil soothe and help protect against UV damage. These are low-foam shaving gels, so if your guy is used to tons of messy, soapy foam, just tell him that these shave gels do the job as well or better, but since they don't contain any soap or parabens, or other drying, skin-irritating components, their skin will be soft and less irritated. Who knew that a simple product like shaving cream could be so high-tech? And doesn’t dad, deserve them? TIP: King of Shaves also has a Hybrid Shave Oil $6.99 2 fl. oz., in cooling menthol or non-mentholated versions. These shave oils, in pump-top plastic bottles, combine the performance of a shave oil with a shave gel. It won’t clog his razor, and rinses off as easily as the more traditional shave gel. Even better, the small bottle has about 60 shaves in it- just perfect for travel.
Stop by Misikko for a great deal on today's hottest flat irons like a CHI flat iron or from top brands like FHI Men will embrace basic skincare if you don't push the boundaries too much. That's why our male reviewers gave high marks to the products by Lab Series by Aramis. The products are packaged in simple white boxes and tubes with bold, black and red lettering. It's masculine, but also serious and clean-looking. If your special man wants to look good, but definitely doesn't want to dip into your products, get him the Active Body ash $18.00 6.7 fl. oz., and Active Hand Cream $15.00 2.5 fl. oz. That'll get him started loving his own products. The Hand Cream has a subtle, fresh, clean, green scent, and absorbs really quickly without any greasy residue. It smoothes and conditions, and helps to remove the look of dark spots. Although we can't verify the tests that claim an immediate 73% improvement in moisturization, hands did feel softer--and that's the main thing. The Active Body Wash has electrolytes and concentrated aloe to refresh, renew, recharge and make him rejoice! It is genuinely good. I love the burst of clean, fresh scent. I love the gentle exfoliating, buffing spheres, plus salicylic acid, pumice and carnuba wax beads to help tone, smooth and brighten his skin. The cleanser foams nicely, rinses off clean, and I know for a fact that his skin is going to feel amazing, because I tried this one myself (couldn't resist) and the improvement was quite noticeable. Alas, the scent is really meant for a man, but I still love the product. Here's a case where the ladies might be "stealing" a product back from their guys! Basic skin care can improve the look and feel of their skin right now, and protect it against aging for the future. Lab Series Daily Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 15 $37.50 3.4 oz. by Aramis is a lightweight moisturizer with an invigorating, fresh scent that continuously hydrates, smoothes, and reconditions skin all day long. And, even if he isn't all that aware of it, anti-oxidants are also guarding his skin against the signs of aging. What's even better, this simple but effective product has a breakthrough technology delivers solar-activated protection against the sun's UVA/UVB rays and other environmental stresses all day long. Since most men really don't bother with SPF protection on a daily basis (although they should), even if he's out in the sun, at least he'll get at least a minimum of SPF protection from this multi-tasking product just for men. This is particularly important since shaving exposes new skin more quickly than a woman's, and the new skin cells need more protection! It's good for all skin types--there's no excuse not to use it! The Advice Sisters have reviewed a lot of shaving creams, soaps and gels in the past few years, but even the most moisturizing of the bunch can leave your skin feeling dry and irritated. After all, when you shave, you are removing a layer of skin cells along with the hair! Eshave’s Almond After Shave Cream $22.00 is one of the easiest and most pleasing ways I know of to soothe and moisturize skin post shave. The key ingredient is emollient and healing shea butter. It also has Vitamins A and E, soothing aloe vera and chamomile extracts and an amazingly delicious almond essential oil that makes post-shave moisturizing something to look forward to. While shea butter can often be heavy and overly emollient, this light as air, whipped after shave cream is seriously moisturizing without any of that extra greasy feel. The cream works extremely well, and the sweet, rich, almond scent is absolutely addictive. Get two jars, because you and your special someone will both want to use it -- one jar is not nearly enough!
GREAT MAKEUP:
Every time I look at Iman, all I can think is: "What a gorgeous woman!" No matter what decade, she shines. Her cosmetics line shows that Iman is not just gorgeous, but smart. She knows makeup and she knows women...after all, she's still a supermodel! These products have simple packaging, but the products have the feel and performance of high-end ones. Although the makeup is geared towards women of color, many of the high quality, low-cost items in her line work for all women. The Iman Luxury Lip Shine $9.99 for example, in "Glitzy," a clear squeeze tube of super-shiny, clear gloss that pampers lips with aloe vera and Vitamin E, is shot through with a generous, starry helping of gold glitter. The glitter reflects light, and makes lips look pouty. The Moisturizing Lip Stain $8.99 in a golden-nude called "Striptease" is a star--sheer and natural, creamy, soft and pampering. Keep the color under control with a Perfect Lip Pencil $6.99. These are creamy, luxurious, soft, intense, and blendable. "Cocoa" is a warm brown that helps prevent feathering and provides a base for all the nudes and warmed toned browns you'll be seeing in stores, soon. Iman's Eye Pencils $7.99 are equally wonderful. The pencil in "Jet Black" is really versatile for blending, lining, and a smoldering eye look. *read about Iman's mineral foundation on the Advice Sisters Blog Roses are the unspoken symbol of love and romance, and pure

M.A.C. Cosmetics just launched a new, rose-themed collection called "A Rose Romance," timed to the blooming of genuine roses, lasting fleetingly from May through June, 2009. This is complete collection, featuring three Lipsticks, three Lipglass, three See Thru Lip Colours, five Eye Shadows, Two Pigment, One Mascara, Just In Pink Sheer Gel Blush, Beauty Powder, Fix + Rose, Nail Lacquer, Creations Hue. Although I didn't see all of the pieces, the ones I saw convince me that this collection is going to be a smash hit. It's a beautiful collection for Spring into early Summer. Here are some of the highlights:...read the review on the Advice Sisters blog.
ver since I was a teenager, I've loved Shiseido cosmetics and fragrance, but it's been a while since I've tried them. For Spring, I tried Perfect Rouge Lipstick $25.00 from the first global color collection created by Shiseido Artistic Director, Dick Page. The collection has a whopping two dozen mild-to-bold, saturated colors, that offer a polished, moistly-matte look that's sophisticated and modern. I love the purple, metallic lipstick cases that aren't content to be plain. They're indented on all four corners to create a modified flower shape that gives you better control when you're holding the tube. The lipstick inside provides true, intense, long-lasting coverage and color that doesn't feel the least bit drying, but isn't overly "pouty." This is the type of lipstick Grace Kelly would have loved...sleek, sophisticated, a bit demure, but with bold color--a "bad girl" with pearls. My favorite is RD305--an absolutely perfect, deep rose that makes lips look amazingly romantic, but still somehow, like they're really your own coloring. "RD516" is one of the most intense, clear, blue reds I've ever seen to flatter cool skin tones. "PK 307" is a medium pink that's feminine and more subtle, but certainly memorable--perfect for brides and proms.
Chanel is known for luxurious, sophisticated, and wearable fashions, and their makeup line is similarly beautiful, a real treat to own and to wear. The Spring 2009 Makeup collection features a lovely, "boho" vibe inspired by gypsy dresses, featuring bold contrasts: nudes and earth tones with bold reds and deeper tones. Every Boho goddess needs a chic lip compact. The Levres Signees Satin Lip Color Compact $60.00 features five dreamy, satin lip creme shades, from pale pink to deep plum in Chanel's signature, mirrored, square, black compact. A nice touch is that the lip cremes are packaged so that they form Chanel's iconic crossed "C" logo. *for the entire rundown on this collection (in case you missed it), read the post on the Advice Sisters Blog. Titanium DIoxide is one of the most recognized sum blocks. For those who refuse to wear a simple sun block every day, another way to get the protection you need for daily wear is to use another product that has at least a reasonable amount of Titanium Dioxide in it. I like the Renew & Lift Foundation SPF 15 $6.99 by Rimmel London. The pump top foundation has 7.4% titanium dioxide and 4% Octinoxate, plus it comes in three shades (wish there were just a few more) shades, and is oil free I tried 200 Soft Beige, the coverage is sheer to moderate, depending upon how much you blend it. Just enough to cover flaws, but not enough to be mask-like. there was a pleasant, fresh scent and even better, the creamy foundation dries fast, so you can add your blush and/or finishing powder and quickly get on with your day. The foundation also has a "Time Reverse Complex" that did make my skin feel a little bit firmer, but perhaps it was just the light-reflecting particles that made it look so good (for so little money). SPF 15 is not enough protection to keep you safe when you're out in the sun for long periods of time, but for daily activities, it's fine. If you refuse to wear sunscreen, at least it's a beautiful way to start taking care of your skin. Another multi-tasking beautifier is Stay Matte Foundation $6.99. It has a "Skinpure Complex," that has just a gentle dose of salicylic acid to help clear up imperfections and botanical extracts that help soothe. The foundation supposedly provides up to 12 hours of shine-free, fresh-looking skin (although I don't suggest you wear any makeup that long without re-applying). However, it will keep your face safe from break-though shine when the weather (or stress) heat up. The slim tube makes it easy to tote when you're going away for the weekend, or fixing your face after washing it, or after a workout. For Spring 2009 Laura Mercier features" Gilded Garden," a floral inspired collection of color cosmetics featuring her latest product: the Gilded Garden Mosaic Shimmer Bloc in "Rose" $38.00. This large square of shimmery, light-reflecting color, is embossed with "flowers" of varying, rosy hues and a champagne shimmer. Together, the colors meld to give your cheeks a lovely, rosed flush. It looks elegant, not super-shimmery but enough to show every woman her true ability to glow. You can use it on your eyes or body as a highlight as well. It's oil-free and suitable for all skin types, and comes in the signature, Laura Mercier square, brown, mirrored compact. What a great treat for Spring! I also tried out some of Laura's latest Lip products *read the extensive review on the Advice Sisters Blog

There's just something about Korres products I like. I guess it's just that beneath the simple packaging are great products that are good for your skin, with natural ingredients such as oils from Greek herbs, fruit and flowers and other botanicals without some of the harmful chemicals you don't need on your skin. The Korres Natural Products Color Collection features colors found in nature, with a classic palette of tones that work for most everyone. The Korres Guava Lipstick $18.00 for example, offers antioxidant protection thanks to guava extract, rich in Vitamin C. It feels moisturizing and soft and luxurious, in eight, opaque colors from nude and pink to warm brown and wine. Creamy lipsticks don't always last, but these do, thanks to natural waxes and vegetal butters. I tried #25 (pink), a browned pink that is a shade darker than my natural lips, and makes them look smooth, moist and creamy. There's a lovely, vanilla scent, and the slim-style lipsticks with angled top makes for perfect application every time. For more color, pampering moisture, and shine (alone or over a lipstick) Pot glosses need to be applied with a lip brush or they are essy, but the Korres Lip Butter $9.00 is more than worth the effort. These are so luxurious. They smell like fruit, slide on like silk, and offer enough color to show up on lips (like a lip stain) while pampering them with shea butter and rice wax. After a long Winter of dry, chapped lips, this is the perfect way to heal them and add a punch of color! I tried "Plum" (more wine than purple) . These are also free of mineral oil, silicone and other harsh ingredients.
It has been a long time since The Advice Sisters have reviewed Laura Mercier, but I have always loved her products. I am not usually a "faux tan" fan, but the Physicians Formula Bronze Booster™ Glow-Boosting Loose Bronzing Veil $14.95 has made me a fan of their powder bronzer, at least. The packaging is part of what gets me excited: a travel-friendly, all-in-one tube with brush top that and a plastic cover that even includes a mirror. Even better, you can "dial up" your comfort level of faux tan, so you don't look too orange, or too brown, or too...whatever. Physician's Formula has also recently introduced Organic Wear, a line of chemical-free cosmetics certified by ECOCERT (an organic certification organization with specific standards especially for cosmetics). I tried one of these intriguing products, the eco-conscious version of mascara. Organic wear® 100% Natural Origin Mascara $9.99. But it's the formula inside that counts * read these complete reviews on the Advice Sisters Blog
FASHION ITEMS FOR SPRING:
These days, the phrase: "a girl can't have too many shoes" might have to be changed to: "a girl's got to be creative if she wants enough shoes!" But where there's a will, there's a way. This summer, budget but fashion-minded women are going to want to know about Switchflops $32.00 to $42 + $10.00 additional straps by Lindsay Phillips. These flip flops look like upscale versions of the ones you wear all the time, but they have a secret: In the blink of an eye, they can become an entirely different look! That "secret" is that the Switch-Flop straps are lined in velcro. Simply pull off the top strap of the shoe, and stick on another one of dozens of cute fabric designs. There are three different shoe styles, four different colors, and more than 60 different straps to choose from. Choose a wedges, flats, and/or a kitten heel, and build a staggering wardrobe around them all for less than the cost of a sandwich and a drink! I tried the "Taylor," the highest wedge (still fairly low) that comes in black, brown and white with silver scrollwork. The straps come in Small, Medium or Large depending upon shoe size and there are even Switchflops and straps for children. What makes Switchflops even more amazing is the story of the creator. Beautiful and crafty Lindsay Phillips adorned her first pair of flip-flops as a high school art project. Her idea evolved when she realized that by using Velcro she could create one shoe with many straps–unlimited choices with minimal effort. Lindsay applied for a patent on her idea before she graduated high school and developed the concept even more during her college years. After her patent was granted in 2004 and Lindsay was ready to enter the working world, she joined forces with her mother, Liz, to start her business. Honor your mom with her own pair of switchflops. I love the idea for a bride-to-be as well. With just a few extra straps she'll have a suitcase of shoes for her honeymoon that she can literally, carry in a knapsack.
During the great depression, when customers required socks that would wear better and last longer than ever before, Great American Knitting Mills introduced a sock with a gold reinforcing yarn sewn in the toe. This "durable "sock with the gold toe" is the GOLDTOE® hosiery men have relied on ever since then. In 1983, GOLDTOE® also introduced a women's line, followed by a boys line in 1986 and a women's tights line in 1992. The women's AquaFXC Flower Pop Crew $7.00 or $18.00/3 pairs is made up of soft 46 % pima cotton, 48% aquaroad nylon, 2% spandex and 2% stretch nylon. Apart from the soft knit and pretty design, what's great about these reinforced toe and the elastic band at the top--not too tight, and not so loose that I'm tugging them up. What more can you say about socks except that we all need them, we all wear them, and we might as well pick products that perform well and look good. Read the review on the Advice Sisters Blog
Your feet may be almost out of shoes for a few months, but socks are still a fashion statement. If you're strapped for cash this mother's day, or you are seeking cute socks to wear with shorts and sneakers, you can't go wrong with Gold Toe socks for Spring and Summer. Check out the review on the Advice Sisters Blog. Thinking about giving mom a special gift this year (doesn't she deserve it) but you're stumped as to what she's love? The hand-crafted, unique, spectacular jewelry from Elisa Ilana, especially their Mothers' Bracelets, gives this sentimental classic a new twist. I love the bold, square, sterling silver "alphabet beads" plus accents of silver, 14K gold, or 14K gold filled beads, some fluted, some plain, and if you wish it, a choice of semi-precious and precious birthstones (traditional and modern choices), crystals and handmade glass beads. Mother's Bracelets are not just a way to show off your children or grandchildren's names. Make a name bracelet for yourself, or promote what you do? I asked for "Advice Sisters" and received a stunning, 2-strand bracelet that spells out my domain name and manages to look like a boutique bracelet as well. Everyone asks about it (a real conversation starter).I love it! The photos don't do it justice. You can order online and they're quick and efficient. FANTASTIC FRAGRANCES FOR WOMEN:
David Yurman is known for his bold, sophisticated and pricey jewelry designs, but like many designers these days, he is branching out into other items that women covet. David Yurman Eau de Parfum $120.00 1.7 fl. oz. is precious both in terms of looks, and scent. To begin with, the shiny, black black outer box with gold lettering looks like it holds something precious...and it does. Slide it open and nestled into a foam back is a fantastic bottle. It's the type of bottle collectors dream about: a large chunk of crystal that's square, but sloped at the top end. Inside, there's another bottle: a faceted, burnished gold flask that hangs suspended in the glass as if it was encased in ice. The cap is a gracefully curved rectangle of gold metal with Yurman's iconic cable design in the front and back, smooth on the sides, and with simple, intertwined initials DY at the very top. Yurman's debut scent, created with his wife. I would have guessed that this scent would be a significant oriental or floriental, but it's actually fairly soft. A well balanced blend, the scent, created by perfumer Harry Fremont, has up-front notes you recognize immediately: mandarin, fresh green petals, cassis, along with florals of peony, water lily, natural rose otto, and the bottom of patchouli and exotic woods The fruit gives way to a soft floral with a hint of wood that doesn't knock you over, but smells very sensuous up close. If you don't buy it just for the bottle (and many, will) you will love it for the way the scent makes you feel. Even if David Yurman jewelry is out of your budget range, his newest "bauble" might be attainable--and it's just lovely. TIP: There's a Mothers Day Gift Set $170.00 exclusively for Neiman Marcus ,featuring the 1.7 fl. oz. Eau de Parfum and a 6.7 oz. net wt. Luxurious Body Cream encased in a chic, keepsake gift box.
HOME HELPERS
By now, thoughts are turning to Summer and lazy, sunny, beach days. One way to get the feeling in your home before it's bikini time, is with a decorator accent and a Summer-worthy scent. Slatkin & Co scented home products at Bath & Bodyworks are always delightful and sophisticated. Two perfect to bring the feeling of Summer into your home right now in tranquil, layerable fragrances are: "Shore Breeze" and "Dancing Waters." I love the Scented Candle $19.50 14.50 oz; $9.50 4 oz pure white and poured into a porcelain sea shell (shore breeze) or genuine-size conch shell (dancing waters). The candles will instantly transport you! They're large enough to light and scent your home for weeks. "Dancing Water" is a light, almost sweet, fresh and green, "beachy" scent that reminds me of suntan lotion and warmed sand, with a whiff of salt air. It features crushed basil, water lilies and bamboo leaf. Shore Breeze has a saltier, ocean scent that I didn't try, but I'm sure it's lovely. For something pretty and pretty neat, layer "beach" and "ocean" together for your own designer home scent. These two Summer-centric scents also come in a Scentport Home Fragrance Diffuser $12.50, Concentrated Room Spray $5.00, Home Fragrance Oil $7.50 and Wallflower Starter $12.50. Let at least one of these make Summer happen, faster!
Maybe it's just a same-old, same-old day today, but at home, really good, scented candle, can literally, light up your life! When you're choosing a luxurious candle, the really good ones pay dividends every time you light them. Even in these economic times, just a few dollars extra can net you a wonderful candle that is high quality, omes in a beautiful container, with a scent that makes you feel pampered, every time you light it. Candle Delirium & Banana Republic make unique, beautifully-presented scented candles you'll want to try. Read the review on the Advice Sisters Blog
BEAUTY TOOLS & HELPERS
In the bra-burning era, bras and girdles fell out of favor. That's fine when you're wearing a loose peasant dresses, but today's clinging knits and synthetics require a little something underneath to make them (and you) look good. The new breed of Body Shapers are light and stretchy, and generally made from interwoven nylon and Lycra spandex so they can move with you, but still conform to your body. Body Shapers aren't substitutes for diet, exercise or even surgery. They won't shave 50 pounds off your body, but they will instantly make you look less lumpy and therefore give you a slimming appearance. It won't change the world, but it will make you feel great! Celebrities swear by body shapers to make their already great looking bodies, even better. If you want to try some basic body shapers, read the Advice Sisters comprehensive Review of Slimpressions, Sculptz and Body Wrap on the Advice Sisters Blog Also read the SPANX review. Why should deodorant be boring? Ban Invisible Solid $2.99 Limited Edition blends a high-performance product with the delicious scent of Vanilla...with a twist! Vanilla Twist solid is infused with top notes of fruits, along with creamy vanilla. To me, it smells like a rich, sensuous vanilla ice-cream cake! The product works well, and now, it smells amazing! No man will be able to resist you! The good-enough-to-eat product also has kihada extract and silver cancrinite, use-patented, high technology that specifically targets and virtually eliminates (not masks) spicy and stress related odors. TIP: Did you know you can keep Ban Invisible Solid on your shelf for up to three years? But it definitely won't last that long because you'll want to use it! I have never been a fan of self-tanners, but they’ve gotten so sophisticated, I’ve caved…a bit. I do like Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Daily Moisturizer 5 fl. oz in two skin tones (Fair to Medium or Medium to Dark). It gradually increases the look of tanning on your skin, so even faux tan average people like me can control the color with comfort. A golf-ball sized amount of this foamy gel, used daily, will not only keep your skin moist, but it will help you get a glow without having to change color from pale to San Tropez dark in one application. And, since I have to moisturize anyway, I'm loving the way I can keep my legs soft and moist, and add a bit of additional color. It is particularly great for now, since my pale skin is beginning to see the sunlight after a Winter's hibernation. The formula doesn't smell weird, doesn't feel greasy, and dries really fast, so you won't end up with embarrassing stains all over your clothes. The streak-free product tans so gradually you can't make a mistake and look crazy-fake, Just remember, faux tanners aren't substitutes for products with SPF. You may look genuinely tan, but you skin will not be protected without a good sun block! Along with "Spring Cleaning" of your clothes, why not do a bit extra for your Winter-weary teeth? Colgate® MaxWhite™ srp. $3.29 6.0 fl. oz. is a new toothpaste with hundreds of "mini bright strips" containing cleansing silica, to recharge the natural whiteness of your teeth simply as you brush. The toothpaste comes in two types: Crystal Mint and Minty Sparkle. I tried the Crystal Mint, in a clear tube with a white flip-top cap. It looked pretty, and tasted bright and spearmint-y. Of course, this toothpaste also fights cavities and freshens breath. There's also a very nice Colgate MaxWhite Toothbrush srp. $3.49 with a unique, "polishing star" in the middle, and bristles specially designed to remove and fight stains. The chunky handle is easy to grip, and the full head of bristles comes in soft and medium. It's comfortable to use, and nice to look at. Little things mean a lot, especially when you're on a budget. These products won't give you a blinding, tile-white smile unless you were born with it, but they will help to remove surface stains, and make your teeth look and feel fresher. It's an affordable way to maintain healthy-looking teeth, and a good way to maintain and protect your investment if you do whiten your teeth at home, or professionally.
BATH AND BODY HELPERS
The Advice Sisters first reviewed products from Kings & Queens last Fall. What's especially fun about these beautifully scented products is that they are all inspired by herbs associated with royalty throughout the ages. Fittingly, they are mineral-oil and paraben-free, and contain good-for-your skin Pomegranate, Blue Egyptian Lotus and Malachite with hazelnut, grape, sunflower and avocado oils. The pomegranate has a "crown-like" top and antioxidants, the blue lotus was the ancient Egyptian symbol of glory and it contains bioflavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, and malachite was used by Russian Tsars to decorate their palaces, not just for the stunning, green color, but for it's supposed detoxifying and healing properties. Three new, hard-milled bar Soaps $6.00/each are perfect scents for Spring and Summer. My favorite is "Nefertiti," with a sweet, sinfully sexy, honey scent. Nefertiti was renounced for her beauty. Wife of an Egyptian Pharaoh, she could afford to indulge with expensive and rare beauty treatments, including honey. The soap is wrapped in a beige and caramel-colored wrapper and the 6.53 oz. bar of soap inside looks like beeswax and smells like a honeycomb. It's the perfect little indulgence. "Queen Isabella," is a fresh, spicy, cinnamon with a hint of orange scent and a carrot-orange colored soap bar. It's fun to use and to look at, and guys like it, too (just don't tell them it's for "royalty"). I didn't try the King of Sumatra" soap, but it's a pepper bergamot--and who doesn't love pepper?
M.D. Skincare is the creation of Dr. Dennis Gross, a New York dermatologist who produced a line of skin care products that combine the best of nature and science in multifunctional products that provide great skin solutions. The Advice Sisters have reviewed many MD Skincare products in past What Works columns. All products are made with natural and organic ingredients. They are 100% vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated without parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, mineral oil, paraffin, synthetic dyes and fragrances. A product that I really like is the Botanical Bar with Tea Tree and Aloe $24.00. This nicely-sized, 7 oz. solid bar of soap lathers nicely, and cleanses face and body. Natural essential oils, antioxidants, and organic aloe help keep skin healthy and young looking. There's also shea butter and a variety of other good-for-your-skin ingredients to keep skin most and pampered. The product is soothing, so it's great for dry, irritated or sun/win-burned skin. It smells a bit citrus-y and while it's not specifically for men or women, both sexes will love it. Also good for all is the Creamy Cleansing Polish with jojoba Beads $38.00 6.7 fl. oz. This nice body polish in a frosted clear and copper flip-top tube compliments the bar soap in color and scent. Jojoba Beads provide a mild exfoliation and moisturize, while organic Aloe and natural ingredients wash away toxins and environmental impurities. Papaya Extract also helps exfoliate, and there are natural botanicals that help firm and hydrate skin. This is a spa-style exfoliation treatment for everyone and both these products made my skin feel soft, pampered and wonderful... that's really worth the money! I love Liz Earle Naturally Active
Skincare for it's gentle, effective and spa-like products that
pamper without making a big production of it. The Hand Repair

SKINCARE HELPERS
Clinique's new Youth Surge SPF 15 Age Decelerating Moisturizer $48.50 helps to protect your skin against the sun's damaging rays, while working simultaneously to slow down the visible signs of aging. This product uses botanical extracts and an exclusive, patent-pending complex with isonicotiamide/ Luteolin/NADH that combines Sirtuin activation technology, anti-glycation science, collagen boosters, and sun blocks -- all to help your skin to function better and guard against aggressors that make your skin look older, faster. I am not going to go into all the tech-speak but basically, sirtuins help to extend the function and life of cells, and are known as "longevity genes." The product also has ingredients that help to protect fragile and healthy natural collagen and elastin so your skin looks more supple and resists the future formation of lines and wrinkles. The UVA/UVB sunblock also protects your skin and helps delay future signs of aging. It comes in a jar, and in Very Dry to Dry; Dry Combination; and Combination Oily to Oily versions. I tried the Dry Combination formula and, as with all Clinique products, I was impressed. The soft cream with a whipped texture feels luxe and pampering on the skin, and absorbs without leaving an oil slick. I'm sure the other two are just as good. If you are well on the other side of 40, there are probably products that are just as good or better for you, but for younger skin (or skin that still looks young), this product might just help prolong the look you love, a bit longer.
Clarins is a French skin care line that has lots of luxe products for skin of all types and for men and women, but it's specialty is treatment products. They've just introduced two products to firm and support an area of skin you might be overlooking: the bust/décolleté. In fact, they aren't just offering one product, they're offering two: one for day, one for night. The Clarins Bust Beauty Extra-Lift Gel for day $58.00 1.7 fl. oz. is a clear, amber-colored gel that has plant extracts to firm, tone and support skin, and to act as a "natural bra" to support the bust where firmness and tone are needed. These products may be a bit pricey, especially when you're investing in the day and night treatments, but they have some exotic ingredients, too. For example, Vu Sua extract (a fruit from Vietnam. "Vu means breast, and sua means milk) stimulates collagen production and works on the "natural bra" area, while it protects against free radical damage. Oat Sugars help tighten. Katafray, from a tree in Madagascar, is a natural moisturizer, and pomegranate helps improve the skin's texture. The Clarins Bust Beauty Firming Lotion for Night $54.00 1.7 fl oz. is a milky, softly fresh/floral-scented lotion that also has vu sua and pomegranate, but it includes ingredients such as centella Asisatica (to encourage collagen products, soothe and protect skin), Bocoa (a plant from the Amazon) for natural firming, and Vitamin B5 and sunflower phospholipids to moisturize and nourish. I love the elegant, frosted glass bottles with white and gold pumps and caps. A little goes a long way, and a little improvement goes a long way, too. It's a lot less expensive than a surgical alternative, not to mention a lot more pleasant. One of the first areas to show the signs of damage and aging, is the jaw and neck line. New on the market is SKINN Chin Up Firm and Tone $45.00 1.7 fl. oz by Dimitri James. This light serum in a pump bottle might help turn back the clock, at least a little bit. Your neck area ages in different ways. "Type A" people experience thinning, collapsing brittle skin on the neck that becomes dry and sinks with diminished elasticity ("chicken neck"). "Type B" people get something even worse--a heavier full neck ("double chin"). and, both types can see increased age spots and lines. Dimitri James has two custom formulas in serum strength creams for Type A or Type B aging. I received the "Type B: Chin-Up Firm, Lift and Tone" serum. Read the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog. FarmHouse Fresh®, new to our columns this season, is a luxe but affordable, bath and body line, adorably packaged in re-useable, "olde time" jelly cars and delicate glass pour-spout cruets. These products feature natural ingredients that are gentle to the skin. I adore the Powder Milk Bath $28.00 16 oz in a reusable Glass Mug. There's enough product for at least eight spa-at-home experience, and the scents are divine: blueberry or Nectar. My blueberry sample was a creamy ivory powder in the jar, and it smelled like blueberry muffins. But the scent is't the only selling point. The powder is 97% natural and features chicory root to soothe skin and reduce inflammation and swelling--perfect after a stressful day. It's also got sweet almond oil to make your skin soft, plus fine sifted pure whole powdered milk (rich in more than 20 essential amino acids, vitamins and the sweet fats). Another unique, and fun to use product is the moisturizing Strawberry Smash Double Moisturizer $21.00 7 oz. It arrives looking like a delicious treat to eat, in a jelly jar. The creamy pink body whip blends with the live strawberry cells suspended in a body gel, to nourish and moisturize your skin a new way, like jelly and cream! The product includes aloe leaf juice, strawberry fruit extract, and shea butter. A jute tote and a mixing stick make the presentation, more fun. Use the stick, or just dig in, and slather it on!
On a budget but want to wow Mom? Get her the Boots Original Beauty Formula Bath Foam and Body Lotion Gift Set $24.99. The Boots Original Beauty Formula is based on traditional formulas resurrected from Boots archives (dating back to 1800s) but made modern. You can't have been in business this long without having great products! These are not just ho-hum products, the Bath Foam and Body Lotion, and all the products in the Original Beauty Formula line, are infused with traditional, essential oils such as rose, geranium and lavender. As usual, these Boots products surprise you with their quality and their luxury at a modest price! Inside the recyclable and impressively large, square, hot pink box with elegant black scroll and white accent, are two large, Apothecary-style bottles. I wonder why the lovely and aromatic Bath Foam is in the clear, glass jar (it could tip over and shatter in the tub). I'm guessing that Boots wanted to truly maintain the look and feel of the packaging that existed before plastic, when women luxuriated in the bath instead of taking quick showers. A less authentic but safer package is the plastic pump bottle containing the very lovely, easily absorbed and efficiently moisturizing Body Lotion. Both products have the benefit of a delicious, calming rosemary and gorgeous lavender, scent. There are other products in the Boots Original Beauty Formula line as well...but I think this one makes an impressive gift that any woman would love to own. It doesn't have to be Summer for you to need SPF protection--you should wear it wherever you are exposed, every single day of the year! Hawaiian Tropic is a company known for sun screens, but they have other products besides suntan lotions. Two that I recently tried and really thought were fun to use, are the Hawaiian Tropic Aloha Kiss Lip Gloss Island Berry srp. $5.35 and the coco-nutty Hawaiian Tropic Body Butter srp. $6.43 8 oz. Read the review on the Advice Sisters Blog I have enjoyed the Risarium skincare products from Perlier a great deal. Their key ingredient is black rice peptides, a powerful weapon against aging skin. But now there’s another new and excellent product, if somewhat more pricey, to add to your Risarium collection: Risarium Black Rice Platinum Face Serum Ultra Renewing $75.00 1 fl. oz.. It arrives in a striking, black pump bottle with silver accents. The product works magic not just with black rice peptides, but also with acai extracts and a concentrate enriched with olive tree extracts and Pro-Aquaporins that stimulate the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This luxurious, fragrance free product also stimulates natural moisturizing, and protects against environmental aggressors. I particularly like the new, “liquid crystals” formula that helps the silky serum absorb quickly into your skin, so it can do “good works” even faster. When you purchase a product packed full of good-for-your-skin ingredients, you're offering you skin a chance to be it’s best. If you can make some room in your budget, you’ll know you’re doing something good for your skin day and night.
HANDS, NAILS & FEET: Who wants smelly, swollen, tired feet? No one! But when you pound the pavement, the soles of your feet take a beating, And, encased in shoes with paper or plastic liners, they can become sweaty. This double whammy can make your feet smell bad as well as feel bad. One way to keep feet sweet, is to keep them free of sweat. Summer Soles $8.00/pair, available in two styles – “Softness of Suede,” a soft micro fiber polyester, and “Ultra-Absorbent,” a non-woven wool blend, also come in a wide range of colors and fit nearly any style of open or closed shoe. All you have to so is trim the heel to size (there are templates, included), peel and place in your shoe. I tried the Ultra-Absorbent inner sole, made of 70% wool and 30% rayon. Wool and rayon may seem hot, but they're not! These absorbent liners let your feet breathe so they stay dry while nylon or poly liners, don’t. They pamper tired, swollen feet. Little things mean a lot. When your feet hurt, you can’t look relaxed. Another plus, these insoles are completely removable, leaving no residue behind. They also can extend the life of your shoes. If you're bothered by perspiring feet or general “slippery discomfort” you will find these a great treat for your feet. Yoga Toes are flexible, plastic, hypo-allergenic, devices that look like little ladders, but once you place a toe in each "strut" and wear them a while, they really help to relieve toe and foot pain. It seems pretty incredible, but they do work...and they're so simple! They do for your toes what gentle stretching exercises do for the rest of your body. There are other, similar devices, but YogaToes are patented, made in the USA, and of FDA approved material. Get Original YogaToes® *$49.95 and add the clip-on, battery operated massagers $24.95, or go for the Signature Gift Set *$69.95. Read the Entire Review on the Advice Sisters Blog. It's almost watermelon time. One type that's available right now, but you don't eat it, you put it on your feet, is the Foot Works Watermelon Cooling Foot Lotion $4.99 3.4 fl. oz. by Avon. This light lotion in a flip-top tube is really fun to use. It's a bubble-gum pink color, but it smells like watermelon. It feels refreshing, especially on hot, tired feet. After a day hoofing it around in shoes, a nice way to unwind from the day is to massage a bit of this lotion into your feet, and let the relaxation, begin! It moisturizes as well as soothes, so you have an additional reason to use it. It's inexpensive, but it is really like a DIY foot treatment!
HAIR HELPERS:
Every runway hair stylist has a secret weapon in their bags–Elnett Hairspray by L’Oreal Paris. It has been banned in United States for more than two decades US because the original version’s spray got it’s "oomph" from ozone-damaging fluorocarbon propellants. But now, thanks to some tweaks to the spray, L'Oreal has released Elnett Satin exclusively through Target with prices from $6.99 2 oz to $14.99 11 oz. It’s not exactly the same, but it costs a whole lot less than a trip to Europe and the risks involved with harboring aerosol cans in your suitcase . Read the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog I have met Rodney Cutler many times, backstage at some of the hottest fashion shows during Fashion Week. But he also has his own salon in Manhattan on 57th Street, and it has earned a 9.9 (out of 10) Best Of ranking at City Search --that's pretty impressive! Of course, the master stylist also has his own line of hair care and styling products, including one of my favorites: The new Cutler Protectant Treatment Spray $21.00 6 fl. oz. The spray moisturizes hair while it creates a barrier between your heat styler or blow dryer and your hair. It also protects against sun damage. A combo of wheat, rice and almond proteins plus specialty botanicals also moisturize and add protective benefits, while multi-active polymers, panthenol and avocado oil offer manageability and shine. The pump bottle delivers a fine mist of product that won't weigh your hair down or make it feel coated or greasy...it's really light, but it really works...and that makes it a "must-have" for all hair types.
Organix is new to our columns, and I'm happy to tell you that they're really good! Their budget-friendly collection (all are just $6.99) include over 50 shampoos, conditioners, and styling treatments that smell amazing, and provide gentle pampering. I tried the Enriching Cucumber Yogurt Shampoo, and Conditioner. Both come in Rubenesque green containers with gold flip tops. The products have organic avocado oils (for anti frizz) cucumber extract (to energize and hydrate) and yogurt proteins (antioxidant nourishment). The products have a light, cucumber scent. They lather nicely and wash out clean. More importantly, they condition without leaving hair greasy. Mine hair was dry and needed TLC. These products delivered spectacularly, making my hair feel soft, silky, shiny and less fly-away, but not a hint, greasy. I am sure the other, new collections will be just as good: Moisturizing Grapefruit Mango Butter (to hydrate); Energizing Passionfruit Guava (revive tired hair); and Lavender Soymilk (to strengthen) are just as nice. Other products in the Organix line include yummy Coconut Milk, Tree Mint, or even a Mocha Espresso! It's great to find a pampering, effective brand that is sulfate free and contained in eco-friendly bottles (with recycled post-consumer resin and compostable labels printed with environmentally friendly inks) that give you a luxe experience, at reasonable prices. Avon’s Advanced Techniques Instant Recharge Trio of Treatments $8.99/4 applications .507 fl. oz. offer intense hits of high-performing, pro-style treatments with potent ingredients formulated to give your hair what it needs, right now, including Avon’s Advanced Techniques Frizz Control Instant Recharge Treatment; Advanced Techniques Intense Repair Instant Recharge Treatment; and Advanced Techniques Volumizing Instant Recharge Treatment Read the review on the Advice Sisters Blog
There are more than half a dozen different varieties of Cassia Cassia, an aromatic bark, similar to cinnamon, but differing in strength and quality, with stimulant properties. It's the feature ingredient not just in many exotic dishes, but also in the new, Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion collection. Cassia has protecting and conditioning powers, so scientists have found ways to utilize a targeted polymer from it's seeds that adheres to hair to deeply condition it. Nature Fusion Moisture balance gently cleanses and also reduces build-up without stripping hair while protecting each strand. The Nature Fusion Smooth Vitality effectively helps reduce the frizzies, while it gentle cleanses and protects. The Cassia complex in both the Moisture Balance collection, and the Smooth Vitality collection (for strength plus smoothness) creates a protective shield that (Pantene claims) will leave hair naturally radiant and ten times stronger against damage in seven days. Reviewers really did report a good result, and we could see increased body and shine. The 10x stronger? That's harder to assess, but these are still good products at a great price, just $3.99 for generously-sized, 12.6 fl. oz flip top bottles (a treatment is $5.99 for 150 mL). The flip top bottles and fruity scent make them appealing for the entire family.
BaByliss hair appliances are known for their high quality. Two ways to pack styling powder without lightening your wallet is the take-them-with-you-everywhere mini hair tools from BaByliss. The light-blue hued BaByliss Pro 6" Nano Titanium Mini Straightening Iron srp. $29.99 and the Nano Titanium Travel Dryer srp. $29.99 are super-light but also super-effective, and won’t make your tote or carry-on too heavy. A Signature Approach : Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them. The Advice Sisters only include real reviews. That is, I (or a qualified reviewer) actually try the products, This approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from others----I know you appreciate the difference. We don't work with companies that encourage us to use high resolution photos and a press release without experiencing the product in person. I feel "faux" reviews simple add to the junk and clutter on the Internet, without offering anything substantive or new. I hope you feel the same way! My Review Philosophy: This beauty, fashion and cosmetics review column is called "What Works" (not what doesn't). It's just more constructive to my readers to great products instead of deliberately trashing a product I didn't like, but you might love. As an experienced reviewer, I am always mindful of the fact that beauty reviews are highly subjective. It's my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers good information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment about whether to buy it or not. I have tested thousands of products, so I have a solid basis of experience upon which to advise you, but in the end, the decision to try something is yours, alone!
