Strange Invisible Fragrance's Latest: "Fire and Cream

Alexandra Balahoutis, botanical perfumer, and founder of Strange Invisible Perfumes, creates fragrances with natural essences mixed to portray a feeling as much as a distinct or expected representation. In other words, a rose scent will not necessarily smell just like what you expect of a rose. The idea is to create a vibe, not necessarily to reproduce a specific flower or fruit.

Inside a simple round spray bottle is a striking, amber colored juice that immediately brings up an imagine of a brilliant sky at night, full of oranges and reds, heat and flame. The fragrance starts out with orange: top notes of hydro-distilled orange and orange blossom. The heart is golden rust: tuberose, frankincense, and white lavender. The base notes add the spice and brilliance: vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli.

As a redhead with pale skin, Balhoutis proclaims that this is the custom perfume she designed for herself. If you're a perfumer, you can wear anything you create that you wish. But this one is really special. It's so spicy and oriental at first, you might not think that there’s anything but "fire" in the bottle.

....but wait for drydown, in about 10-15 minutes. Then, you sense the "cream." You smell something amazing–not cream actually, but a creamy undertone that mixes with the spices like a chai latte. One of our reviewers insisted the fragrance was loaded with nutmeg. My initial impression is that Fire and Cream smells like an exotic bazaar, full of incense and aromatic spices. But there are also hints of the florals that keep it from being too intense.

The scent is wildly sensual, and very unusual. When you’re paying top dollar for a high-end fragrance, the last thing you want is to smell like everyone else. With this one (and all the Strange Invisible Fragrances), you definitely won't!

All of the Strange, Invisible Perfumes are completely botanical fragrances, crafted of organic, wild-crafted, or biodynamic essences set in a base of 100% organic grape alcohol. Balahoutis distills many of her own essences, using organic materials whenever possible, and favors the use of hydro-distillation rather than steam distillation or chemical extraction methods. Other essences are created from grown in an Ojai, California vineyard, whose climate mimics Southern France, and when required, she gets her essential oils from the world's top distillers. This sort of attention takes much more time and effort, but it part of what makes Strange Invisible Perfumes distinct. These essences and niche fragrances are expensive and rare, but they help the scent to linger with its' notes intact, mixing with a person's unique body chemistry to make each wearer's scent experience, unique.
